Putting greens

Post by Granny911 »

Does anyone know if there are any putting greens still around these days? I tried a Google search and came up with two (one is at Queen's Park) but both said "one hole". Not sure if that means it's one hole only and there for you to play on before golfing. Anyway I am interested in the full putting green like they used to have in the Richmond park, so if anyone knows of one, I would appreciate the info. Thanks, Sheila

Hi Shelia,
I remember the putting green at Richmond park [is it still there ?]. Seems to be a thing of the past now which is a pity. I think the last time I played on a putting green was in Butlins in Bognor Regis when my daughters were only weans and me [the big wean] loved it. What abour Richmond Park these days Shelia ?, when I was up last year they had actually built houses where the sonny pond used to be. Does this mean there will be other parts of the park "taken over" I wonder.
Regards.
Danny :)

The Putting Greens in Richmond Park are long gone, There's houses built on the ground where the Greens once where. Regarding Queens Park, It's a Pitch and Putt course they have, which is on the Langside Rd end of the park.

Hi, Sheila
Do not remember putting greens in Richmond Park but when i moved to Knightswood from the Gorbals my form of income went from "Empties " to "Golf Balls" There being a Nine hole Municipal Course
where i would find a few balls in the rough or sometimes with "wellies on in the Burn round the Periphery of the course and in particular by the third Green where a lot of the golfers would miss the green to the left and with only a wire netting fence between the green and the Burn it was a very good spot for finding a few however some of the ones that I would find were a black or pink mould and to get them back to white involved using some of my Mother,s Bleach but you had to get it just right or too long in the jar and
the paint would come off.!! Th ones that i used to call "old Totties " i would take over to the "pitchin & putt
and there was a one armed man in the "Wee Hut " and he would give me a free round in exchange for one of the old golf ball . I could not loose. :) I used to watch "The Fugitive with Richard Jansen and I
often used to think maybe the guy in the "Wee Hut " was the one armed man that he was looking for .!!
The only downside was that as I had not paid to be on the main course every so often when traipse up and down the rough and you would look up and freeze as The Parkie would be only about twenty yards away and you would just Scarper.!! We use to cal him "Wanderin Willie " because he would just appear from nowhere.!! Great boyhood memories and apologies Mum for nicking all
your Bleach!! :)

Best Regards Reg

Hi Shelia,Adelphi+Reg,
I wonder do they still have those pedlo boats in Richmond park ? [or are they a thing of the past too ?], I was only ever in Queens park once Adelphi and they had a lake/pond there but never ventured far enough to see the" pitch and put ". Doesn't it seem sad nowadays that putting greens, pedlo boats etc that we took for granted when we were weans seem to have gone and a lot of our children nowadays are content to sit in front of a video game.
Regards.

Hi all,
Thanks everyone for your replies, sorry for the delay in answering.
I had been thinking on my trip back next year I would love to take a walk down memory lane and have a wee game of putting. Apparently I won't be able to. Thanks Adelphi for the info on the pitch and putt and the location.
Danny I went to the ducksie a few years ago and it brought back a lot of memories, was sad to hear about the land now having houses on it.
Reg, I laughed at your story about bleaching the golf balls and about the "Fugitive" (used to love that show) and the one armed man. You're lucky you could scarper from the Parkie, because the Parkie for Richmond Park lived next door to my Granny so good luck to us scarpering! Cheers, Sheila
