Hi Caroline, i sent you an email it keeps coming back, i knew a girl Brenda Phinn we were best friends she stayed in abbotsford pl. then she moved next door to me in 36 cavendish st. She had a sister called lilly and her mother was an american they seemed to be better off than the rest of us. They allwase kept to ther selves they went back to america i think 1960. The father was not american, brenda came home in 1971 she made contact with me she told me she had married an american soldier she must have had family here to come back. Can anyone help me find details of the bus collison in Hayfield Street I think in late 60's or 1970? Children were killed. I lived in Hayfield Street then and I remember being at the masses of some of the children. I can still remember the little white coffins. Any help or news sites would be appreciated. I was born in Pine st. Gorbals in 1945. Moved around the corner to 363 Caledonia Rd. have two sisters, Janet & Anne, borther John, am looking for half brother. My father, John Mcbride had another son, don't know the boy's name, he would be approx. 10 years younger than me. His mother was previously a widow with one son (I believe). Have not attempted to get in touch out of respect for my mother. Have thought about this boy for many many years, would like to hear from him.

Ten Quid. You could try Glasgow health authorities e.g. hospitals, death registrar etc, you may have to use the Freedom Of Information Act (FOI) or another act, I can get the name of the other act if you want, to get at the facts. Using the FOI they are legally obliged to engage with you. If they dont you have rights etc. I agree someone should research this stuff innocent people have doubtlessly suffered here. Stephen H.

DIXONS BLAZES wondering how many people living in the shadows of this industry have had relations or themselves have suffered from cancer thru this. Blethering about the CUMBIE i have heard from a few of the 50-60 mob a few have or died from the big C myself i lived and worked there have sufferred cancer of bowel twice, diaghram-byle, duct-liver since 92-06 fractured skull, 3 spine ops, laminectomy fusions now this week I have been told i'm diabetic. All my documents were taken last year to a medical conference in BARCELONA but here is the great feeling more than 3 professors have said the PEOPLE FROM THE GORBALS MUST BE VERY TOUGH, i have often wondered how much of this disease there really was in that area be glad to hear if someone knows the statistics about gorbals folk from around the world was it worse than anywere else or much the same? awera best

The CUMBIE hung around the corner of lawmoor st, cumberland st facing the cop shop. The so called leader 50S-60S went by the name of our most famous boxer LYNCH he lived in florance st. One sunday night after a dance in the communist hall I got jumped on by 2 of the hammer at florence st, yes the cry went out "CUMBIE YA BASS" as 3 guys battled it out with razers and chains. LYNCH jumped in to help me only to get slashed on the hand and his good suit cut in a few places swinging a bike chain as hard as i could, putting one of them in hospital with concusion that caused police involvement a few days later! The funny thing is both of us said the same thing, IT WAS AN ACCIDENT no charges laid but the feuding never ended. Us bampots continued for years until we NEARLY GREW up!

Peter and janet cairns my great grandparents they lived in surrey street. Relatives would be coynes, kincaids, cairns and relatives of peter robertson who lived in surry street but moved to bridgeton. Peter cairns my great grandfather was irish, he married janet muir at st johns in 1872, they had a large family and lived in the gorbals.

Ref: The Cumbie boys. Since my last message i have had dozens of people e-mailing me about the above subject and other matters. Just to clear up a few points:- 1. by the mid 1960s the cumbie was the most powerful gang in glasgow and was considered to be far more formidable than the carlton tongs. 2.the tiny cumbie hung around outside john the indians shop in crown street, the young young cumbie (the YYC) used mostly saint enoch's square as its base and the caley road cumbie could be seen in pubs all over the gorbals (especially the hi hi bar) talking about things that you wouldn't tell your granny about. in a recent interview actor, comedian, robbie coltraine "Cracker" (who was brought up in nearby rutherglen) said hearing someone shout "cumbie ya bass!" was one of the greatest laxatives around at the time. its all in my book about the gorbals which is out next year. colin

FAO: Tam Kennedy, My sister Ann went out with a Jack Whiteside from Ross St. he worked at the Fruit Market and I think he also worked at the Barras. If I remember right he was a real nice person. I think he had a friend called Billy not sure. But that is going away back must have been sometimes in the fifties.

I was born in Elmfoot st in 44. I went to st bonnies. My grannie and granda lived in Logan st, their names was Mc Creadie. My ma's name was peggy, her sisters names were Raechel and Martha. Her brothers names were John, Jimmy, Tommy and Eddie. My teacher at st bonnies was Miss Docherty, her name still gives me cold shivers doon my back. I played in goal for St.Lukes boys guild. A couple of the boys in the same team were Tam Irvine, Tam Docherty and Tommy Green, what a team we had. I remember the washie in wolsley st and the hot wall where you heated your hands going to school on a cauld morning. My ma and da lived in a room and kitchen and the set in beds that we had me and brother were at one end and my sister slept at the other end. Yes we raked the middens but we were hoping that we could find some woolens to take to the ragman and sell, the money wisney for food you hoped to get enough to take you to the ritz or the paragon or the bees. None of the mothers was scared to let there weans out! for they knew they were safe, we didnt have paedophiles roaming the streets, they would have been murdered. We never had to worry about getting cut by a dirty needle as for women hanging out dirty nappies that is rubbish! A woman took great pride in all their washing and the nappies were brilliantly white hanging on the washing line in the back courts. One year 55 I think st lukes won every trophy that their football teams could enter for. The evening times put a centerfold picture showing all the players and trophies with the headline, "this is the good that comes out of the gorbals". Millets in Argyle St did the same thing in their front window. I like to think that we have all moved on to a better lifestyle now, but I am one kid who will hold his head up high in any far flung corner of the world and say yes I came from the Gorbals and I am very proud to say so!

Does anybody out there got any information on my grandparents Charlie and Jean Murphy? They had 6 children whose names were Charlie, Michael, Randy, George, Willie and Jessie. They lived in different streets in the Gorbals, these included Mathieson Street, Lawmoor Street, Florence Street and Nicholson Street in the 1940's and 50's. I do not know much about them and would love to know what they were like. Sadly Michael and Randy have both passed away in the past 3 years, also I lived in the Hutchie-E block on Sandiefield Rd from 1973 - 1981, so if anyone out there remembers me or my sisters Theresa and Annie drop us a line on this website. I was a member in the 1960s and at that time the cumbie were the most powerful gang in glasgow and had three sections - the tiny cumbie, the young young cumbie and the caley road cumbie. we all joined up for the old firm matches and had running battles with either the tongs or the derry.
