Just came across your great site. I was born & raised at 460 Lawmoor St.1941-1956. (second last close before Dixons) Anyone remember the Dixon's fire of about 1949? Loved playing in my garden (graveyard)?Wonder if anyone remembers my family, Charlie & Mamie Martin. We lived in the close, 2nd door on the right. Our neighbours were Joe & Margaret Doris, Frank McNaulty (W.W.1 veteren) Irish family upstairs, the Barratts. Remember the great street party for the coronation 1953, playing kick the can in the winter fog and rounders in the long summer evenings. I wish I were back there. They will always be the good old days.

Hi Doris Austin - I see you mention Artie on this site, is he the nephew of Eddie Austin lived in Snowdon St? Eddie and I sailed on the Captain Cook in 1953, remember being in his house and Artie being there. I worked in the HiHi bar in Crown st later about 1960, some wild nights then. Just wondered if Eddie was still around, a good mate. Lots of good people then and lots of laughs.

Christina and James Philbin - Thanks for your reply-just think it is magic you remembering folk that I knew. It somehow keeps them alive. It was Ben Fox Junior I was talking about that lost his leg-he had a very pronounced limp. He got fedup with weans calling him peg leg so one day he took it off an battered a few heeds wi it and never a thing was ever mentioned again about him having an artificial leg!! You mentioned number 43 and 45 McNeill Street was that straight across from 66? There were dunnies in the houses opposite- hence the term "a honey fae the dunnie" You are right about 66 Mcneill Street it was spooky, dank close with steep spiral railings. I am not sure if the old woman you mentioned on the first right was auld Jinette. I remember an old woman called that- she wore an ancient tattered checked shawl, sitting at the window and she still had the old gas light which meant that the house was very dark. But my memory sometimes plays tricks, I am not sure if that was the next close low down or not. I always thought Mary Lumsden was very Glam when I was a wee girl-she was friendly with my Auntie Nettie. The were both fond of red lipstick, lots of facepowder, seamed nylon stockings and high crocodile skin, wedge-heeled shoes. Nettie married a Londoner and lived there until she died in 1970. Do you remember any of the Moffat family? they all went to Hayfield School, Annie my Gran -the local unofficial midwife; Rab my Grandfather- wore a bunnet like most men then and was very fond of his whisky; they had a large family of 12 three up 2nd left, before they moved to the posh hoose 1st stair up up left. It had its own toilet-quite something to keep up with the Jones's then! Here's wishing you both health to enjoy memories of the old Gorbals. Regards Rita

Does anyone remember the names of the other set of dike jumps (Tarzan, previously mentioned) The backcourt air raid shelters increased the number of jumps dramatically. I remember "The Big Cumbie" and "The Wee Cumbie" "The Death" (There was always a "Death" it usually had two sloping roofs with a set of spiked railings in between) There was a vast network of middens, washouses and air raid shelters somewhere at the bottom of Sandyfaulds, or Hayfield street, which was called "The Forty Thieves" Those were classed as "Away" dikes. I can still hear the wee women at the windaes screaming "Get doon aff i' there afore yese hurt yersel's" If I had stuck wi' dike jumpin' I could probably have jumped for Scotland!

can anyone from the gorbals remember my family? My name is stephen mullan my da was harry mullan, my ma was betty, my sisters are evelyn and isobel, i was born at 358 mathieson street, march 1958. We moved out of mathieson street when they were being torn down, to nearby waddel court on the clyde. I would go to the gorbals swimming baths on saturdays, or go to lennoxs sweetie shop for the broken rock, then around the corner to the george picture house, happy happy happy days, where did they go? We lost my da feb 1965 to an accident, aged at the time only 31 so my ma moved us away to stirlingshire to start a new life, the summer of 1970, we where all heartbroken at the move, i used to come back for a couple of years to see my old pals, davy mclean, phillip rutherford and of course my old teachers at st lukes; miss bogan, miss foley, miss scanlon and the heidy mrs henderson. If anybody out there remembers me i would love to hear from you.

I was frightened from the Kennedys too. Now, people say there have been plenty of stories about the Gorbals written but is that true? No Mean City was a work of fiction based in the 1930s then we had Ralpah Glasser with A Growing Up in the Gorbals and we had other peely wally books which i could not relate to. For example Glaser wrote about the Jewish experience, which i did not experience. i write about EVERYTHING from shopping, the patter, the parties, to the gangs...THE REAL GORBALS STORY...it has been exhaustng over the past three years to do it...but when you read it i am sure you will not be disappointed beasuse, it is (for a change) the REAL MaCOY..there is no substitutes. I wrote it for my mammy and daddy and people like yourself who are far away yet psycholocally so near to the old gorbals. col

To all those who remember folk from 66 McNeil St Gorbals in the 40's 50's and early sixties-or even before! Here is a snapshot from the around 1948. First right low down single end Jane Coulter and Husband -don't know her married name. She moved to 2 up right with daughters Helen and Beth. Beth was profoundly deaf. Low down left Annie and Ben Fox with family Ben - lost a leg as a boy, Francis, and Marie Marie was pally with my sister Janet Moffat. First right The Moffat's Rab, Annie, Lizzie, and James, grandchildren Rita and Janet. Tommy Ralston lived in the middle and he suffered from what they called then, Melancholia. First left lived the McQuarrie's Mr McQuarry and his daughter Helen. She worked for UCBS Bakery.2nd stair up left was Mr McGilvary seniour and Mr McGilvery junior. The elder was a Provi man. In the far lobby was Jane And Sam Doak brother and sister - in their 70's. Next door was the Foley's just a husband and wife though when they died I think some relatives got the house. Three stairs up Mr Mrs Coulter the elder , he was a tailor and she was an invalid. The middle was my aunt and uncle Jock and Cathie Ha! wkins, their family Robert, Archie, John James and Billy The Moffat's lived here before moving down to on e up right. Next door lived Shuggie and Nancy Samson-large family of thirteen Kate, Anne etc. Can anybody fill in gaps from the decades from the thirties- early forties or anyone I have missed out. Does anyone remember anyone with the surname Waddell who lived in the gorbals? This could be as far back as the 1911 and up to the this day. I am trying to trace my grandfathers family. Mother jane rae, father james waddell. He had 2 brothers one sister don't know their names, My grand father left the gorbals round 1917, join the Gordon Highlanders. He last saw one of his Brothers in singapore during the war. It's not much to go on, but its all i have. Does anyone know the background of Waddell St & Court? Who were they named after?

To Betty Earl, I read your note wondering how many cousins you have out there. My father was born at 103 Crown St. His mother was Annie McDonald, then Walker, then Cook. There were 9 children, Wullie, Charlie, Josie, John, James, Robert, Andrew and Sadie Cook. My father was the baby, and became known as George Walker because of all of his brothers, but he was really a Cook. Do you remember them?

Hi i am trying to locate anyone who would know anything about my grandparents John & Rose Griffin. They lived on kidson st on the south side of Glasgow. They had four children Molly, Rose, John & cathie. My grans maiden name was Rose MCQuire and her family came from County Cork Ireland. I remember Hugh Douglas from Cumberland St. He was always in some kind of trouble, we all got into trouble back then. He had cousins that lived in Errol St, Stina Douglas and her older sister. Stina had a pal Annie Reilly, Annies mother had a fruit store. Using my sons computer do not have an email.

The Doran family moved to California, and so did the Keenans. I lived across the street from Helen Boyd my sister Kathleen was pals with the sister with the blonde curly hair. They lived above the Steels. This is some answers for about three different letters hope you all get to spot it.

To James and Christina Philbin, As I said before it was a joy to hear from folk that remember my grannnie and I keep looking at your email and the people you mentioned. Things I remember.... Mary Lumsden had a daughter I think her name was Jacqueline and she was pals with my sister Janet Moffat. Mary's mother was blind or had very poor eye sight. The Kennedy twins were pretty wild as children and we were a bit scared of them. Do you remember any of the Moffat's as individuals? There was Rab my grandfather loved his whisky telling yarns from WW1 and poaching for salmon. Lizzie my mother a quiet hardworking soul; James who was in the Royal Navy during the War; Alan who was great joker and singer, (he lived up the same close as the Fosters his family was Annette, Nan, Jean, Helen and Alan); My Auntie Cathy a fishmonger who lived 3 up at 66 Mcneill St and had 5 boys, a great story teller to kids she by then was a Hawkins; Bobby who died young leaving a family of 5-Loved Jimmy Shand and a pint or 6; Nancy who kept my grandfather Rab's fire kindeled after my grannie died in 1949; May who went to live in Oz in the the 1950's; Ina who used to curl my poker straight hair as a child with tongs heated over the gas-can smell the burnt hair even now; Auntie Peggie the oldest, my special favourite who was married to Jimmy McLaughlin; Nettie who went to live in London-she took me on a visit to her flat at Peabody Buildings in the East End of London in the year of the coronation. I Had a great time singing A Gordon for Me at the street party. They have all gone now, but live on in my memory and hopefully some others like you good selves. Did the Mcmenemy twins run around with John McCue Frank Wilson and such I thought that they were born in New York but raised in the gorbals, so they must have been born 1940 or 41 now. The moonies they all went to Brooklyn New York Eddie and his brother and sister all related to the McGlouglans from Garn Gad.

Re: Betty Skyme I went to school with Tilly (Matilda) Mullen who had a sister called Nan. I didnt know of an Edward but knew a relative had a child died after contracting whooping cough. We used to go to Richmond Park every afternoon Tilly Mary Foster and I with our babies and as soon as Tilly heard anyone coughing she would dive off shouting Ill see you tomorrow that sounds like whooping cough. I have tried to get i touch with her through this site but no luck she married Joe Simms who was manager of Cochranes grocers in rutherglen Road. She lived at the first close in Moffatt Street had two sons little blonde boys then a little girl with red hair just like Tilly, I lost touch heard they had moved to Govanhill area of Glasgow.

TO James and Christina Philbin, I was a great joy to get your message. The thing that made it for me was the dettol story, as my Grannie was the unnoficial midwife for the area and delivered may weans into the world. She was an angel. Remember folks this was pre NHS waiting lists and pre NHS full stop. If you did not have money for a doctor or a midwife you did without. All of the folk you mentioned I knew each and every one, but can't remember the Dorans unless it was the family related to the Foleys who moved into their house 2 up and in the corner of the far wee nook and cranny corner. My uncle was Jimmy McLaughlin who owned the fruit and veg shop in McNeil St he used to supply me with as much "chipped apples" and other fruit as I wanted. So much so that the outside toilet had to be visited a bit too often. His wife Peggie was my favourite Auntie and survived him till last year when she died-missing her 99th Birthday by 10 days. I worked in the Pig and Whistle in my mini skirted heyday with Jimmy and Rose and Mr McAuley was the owner then, a big Irish Gentleman. He had an awful accident one day when he fell down the the trap door right down into the celler. Big man took an tumble a broke several bones, and was never quite the same person after that accident. I could go on and on..... Could you let me know the names of the Dorans and where the lived in 66 McNeil St from 1948? I have a good memory and hate if I can't place people.
