FAO TQ Dearie Dearie Me!, In all my years I have never commented on anybody's post, I am so happy to read all the posts they all are so enjoyable every single one even yours sometimes, I need to ask you, for as far back as I can remember you have had massive squabbles with near enough everyone on here, a wee tip for you from one old yin to another, don't get drawn in...ignore and they will go away, you keep it going!! Wind up merchants have always came from the Gorbals take it on the chin, but I got to admit as a life long Gorbals man, some of your stories blether along. I think deep down in your heart you have fond memories of the old Gorbals so remember them graciously don't be so unpleasant or mention aggressiveness how about telling us about what life is like in Australia what kinda work did you do out there, did you miss yer football? Hi my dad used to live in 59 Naburn Street in around 1957. My grand and grandad used to live there I'm looking to find out some history about it. My Dads name is George Phillips and his brother was called Robyn, his mum was known as Catherine and his dad Robert. My grans sister Cecila Hamilton lived on Caledonia Street if anybody knows of them can you please get in contact. We went in today to try and vist Naburn street but could only find Naburn Gate can anyone please say if it has changed name or been done away with. Thanks Laura.

Hi Amelia, I remember Macindoes dairy and the halls next to it but I can't for the life of me remember what they were called. Can you remember the name of the shop across the road from it, I think it was double fronted or it was two shops in one. I remember the shop up from it, I think it was called Reids and we used to be able to buy the day before's bread and cakes quite cheap. I've also searched the urban Glasgow site for old photos of streets in the Gorbals but I can't find Salisbury Street anywhere on the web. The only one that comes near to it is where Cumberland street runs across the bottom of Salisbury where the old railway station bridge was. If you've found any photographs I'd be grateful if you'd let me know where to look. Cheers Cathie.

FAO James McGuigan, Good to hear from you James, I am fine hope you are too. I didn't know you were in London, our Mary, being a nosey wee wummin, told me. She had been on holiday so I had to wait till she came home. As to the chap you spoke of I have no recollection of him. However my father told me of a boy in his class who was Lithuanian and his name was Peter Slapmiarss. As you can imagine he faced a lot of ridicule with a name like that. Ive read many of your stories and I enjoy them. But I was truly born in the Gorbals. Nicholson street right at the Clyde. I went to Buchan St school. Now, many of you say this and that about the Gorbals, but if I could go back to the days of my childhood,,despite the violence and gangs, I would still go. I lived in Los Angeles for most of my life and now I live my days out in a small town in Kansas,,,I remember rakin the middens etc; What made it bad for me was my mum had me to an American serviceman. So I was doubly cursed in the tenement I lived in. But God bless the good people of the Gorbals. J parker

I have been looking at the photos on the urban glasgow site. They are nearly all around Crown St to Eglinton St. which suited me as I lived in Salisbury St. Quite a lot of the pics had buildings that had been taken over by cash and carry which were not there when I was a toddler but it was still good memories looking at them. The halls that were next to mcindoes dairy were they called the top hat? I know there was a Top Hat up in Shawlands so could anyone let me know. The hall used to hold weddings and dances. Amelia

FAO Anon if these persons are annoying you please try to find a place in your heart to forgive him! This Person who hounded me a few years back! "Jimmy Boyle" is my name I use Tenquid as a nom de plume! for a while it seemed to upset them to a degree that they became insulting! I found myself being dragged into arguments so I stopped writing in the Gorbals anecdotes! Now I am back and enjoying my notoriety! You see after my stroke left me partially blind and a heart operation during which I was awake! "It took a year for the pain to leave" from broken back to my Battle with five tumours the professors doctors and nurses "christened" me the miracle man! Even to this week the kidney specialist beaming from ear to ear told me my kidney function had risen from 40% to 53% and what did he do for me nothing just some tests no medication! No advice or information! "You should do whatever it is you do!" He told me most of this information has been on the anecdotes about the past eight years be quite easy for someone to go back read them and make up any kind of story they wanted such as Quentin or whatever way he wants to spell it 17/03/12 he says he was three years old when he and his sister were taken to Clydebank couple of posts down his sister is five years younger than he is "SHE wasn't even invented yet!" WHEN he was taken to Clydebank I enjoy my writing KEEPS this brain injured person alive! I know my wife and sons had suffered over the past 25 years my older son is 50 this year and born in the Gorbals! But I always tried to make up for it with loving kindness! And I can assure you I have been down this path before with Quentin Quinton 123 321 whatever name you choose now we are not relations! But I don't mind you keep growing your stories as it gives me something to answer now who is next? Tenquid

FAO; Anon, I have been writing on the G.A. for a few years now and you are dead right, but I would add on another 20 years to his age he is older than messusalem! He has been a bricklayer, a gang member, football player scoring the winner at Hampden, begorra! been with Celtic, done a million things all before he left the gorbals at 15yrs, what age were you allowed to emigrate ? 100 years on and he still at the auld kidology, I am not buttoned up the back or came up the clyde in a banana boat, anyway we all know eh? I find it all laughable let him have his fun. I still believe he writes all the letters of appraisal to himself, suddenly new faces/names appear on here out of the blue saying what a nice guy he was! Joseph Hughes - George Cross. 23rd March, 2012 is the 66th Anniversary of the death of Private Joseph Hughes, R.A.S.C. A Gorbals resident and only nineteen years old, Joseph Hughes was stationed at Lymun Barracks in Hong Kong where he was involved in clearing the aftermath of the war, including landmines. He was driving a 3 ton vehicle carrying ammunition and explosives into the magazine area at the Barracks. As the vehicle was entering the storage area, it started to smoulder and caught fire. Knowing full well that his truck could explode at any moment, Joseph did everything in his power to put out the fire, firstly by trying to remove the burning camouflage netting, then by using fire extinguishers. Unfortunately the truck blew up and two days later Joseph died of his injuries. Joseph was subsequently awarded the George Cross for gallantry and is remembered by those in his regiment and the Hong Kong holiday village which is now situated where Lymun barracks used to be. Here in Glasgow and the Gorbals in particular, few have heard of Joseph and his heroism. A plaque containing a replica of the George Cross medal awarded to Joseph Hughes, and a brief summary of his bravery (including photograph) is now hanging inside the entrance (to the right) of the St. Francis Centre, 405 Cumberland Street in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. It is fitting that this should be in the area where Joseph was born and will be a place that people can pay their respects to a brave young soldier who gave his life for so many others. This was made possible by the efforts to have him remembered by Joseph' cousin Irene Finn and with the help of Glasgow City Councillor James Mutter (HUTCHESONTOWN WARD 66) and Mr George Donnachie of the RASC/RCT Association. The following poem was written by Elsa Beattie in memory of a brave young soldier.
JOSEPH HUGHES - GEORGE CROSS - FOR A HERO WAS HE
Joseph Hughes gave his life for his Service Corps 'Brothers', His the ultimate price to save so many others. Just a lad from the Gorbals how proud we should be, of that brave young soldier for a hero was he. His fear and his pain we can only surmise, how he must have suffered in his sacrifice. With esteem his name spoken as it always will be, by his comrades-in-arms of the RASC. In death then young Joseph his actions rewarded, for his gallantry a George Cross awarded. His body lies cold far away in the earth, but let's bring his soul home to the place of his birth. Each act of remembrance brings Joseph back home, to the land of his fathers his spirit will come. So let's always remember with a thought or a prayer,Joseph Hughes from the Gorbals and his courage so rare. ©ELSA J BEATTIE

FAO Pat Doris come on now you can do better than that! The real chic McQueen couldn't kick his own ass! Well not unless there was someone's face attached to it! And I was the coach for Langside Thistle I was on the books of Celtic after I had scored a goal for Bellshill in the junior cup final at Hampden Park and I trained Thistle in Camden Street School and none of the names mentioned ever played for them! Talking about Ginger! on my way to Australia, by ship, we stopped at Freemantle Western Australia! Taking a walk up the peer we came to a little shop my wife and her broad Glasgow accent asked the shopkeeper "can you give me a bottle of ginger?" The man behind the counter handed her a packet of dried ginger "not that, the liquid kind!" After about half a dozen tries I grabbed a handful of my ginger hair and said "that, ginger colour!" The man behind the counter said that the hairdressers was up the street "FKs sake give us a bottle of cordial!" So the man behind the counter handed us a bottle of GINGER ALE! Some people just like to take the ****! do you believe that Pat? It's a great life if you don't weaken Tenquid

I am trying to find information on my dad's side of the family. My dad is Thomas McGuire born 18/1/42 and he has a brother James McGuire 18/10/45. Their dads name was Thomas McGuire and he married Helen Gillion, I believe Helen died in her 30's. My dad and his brother were sent to live in Nazerath House, they lost contact with their dad and mum's family, I believe they lived somewhere in Glasgow, possibily the Gorbals. Hullo there Chic McQueen, I played football with you for Langside Thistle alongside Neilly Cameron, wee Cammy they called him, also do you remember Wee Ziggy, Donnie Brysland, and our goalie Patsy Fenlon. We played a team from Tradeston drew 2-2 then had a reply at their end, we gave Jimmy ginger Boyle a game for the first time, he ran off after ten minutes into the game, he got scared of the tackling, I think he got back to the house quicker than the 49 bus! We were down to ten men and ended up losing 8-0! Ginger Boyle he was made an outcast after that, do you remember the ex-celtic player who used to train us on Thursday nights down in Cathcart Road, I forget his name but might have been Colrain. My dad had a pretty good job, as a long distant lorry driverand he liked to dress up in his best suit at the weekend. But as that big lorry drove away on a Monday there would be one of the neighbours at the door to get my dads suit to put in the pawn and bring it back on Friday before he came home. I dont know if he knew or maybe came home early one week.

My parents & sisters were brought up in Coburg Street during the 50's. I was too young to remember life in the Gorbals. Can anyone briefly describe Coburg Street if it had shops or pubs etc. I notice from old maps it wasn't a long street.

Does anyone remember the Kerr family possibly living in Thistle Street from the 1920s on? My uncle was Charlie Kerr the fighter. My father was Peter. Brothers John (eldest), Joseph, James, Thomasand Norah and Margaret. Their father "raced greyhounds" although we think it more likely he was a "bookie" and died at 36. Mother named Rosina. My dad used to own a cafe in the Gorbals called Charlies - it belonged to our family the Paccittis. It was close to Lawmoor Street does anyone remember it? I left Glasgow in 1978 but remember a few mates from the 60's, Wadgy, Knottsy, Happy doc, a few more would be great to know if they are still kickin.

I am looking for relatives of my grandad. His parents were Francis and Rose Boyle Nee Montford/Mountford. Addresses I have are 94 King Street, Tradeston in 1901, however, on the 1911 census they are shown to be living at 48 Franklin Street, Bridgeton and at time of death (around 1939) Rose was living at what looks like 21 Wesleyan Street, Calton. The children I have for them are Agnes Boyle born 1901, Rosanne Boyle circa 1903 and John Boyle who I believe died very young. Patrick Boyle, (who was my grandad) died in 1946 at number 10 1/2 Eglinton Lane, Gorbals. He was married to Mary Ann Boyle Nee Kilkie and had 9 kids but one died at birth and the others were taken into care,one of them was my dad who was the eldest born 1933,he lived in the Gorbals until the late 1930s early 40s. Mary remarried around 1955 and became Mary Ann Daly and died in 2001. If anyone feels they may be related or have any info then please contact me. I know it was a long time ago but one never knows. I guess to the Gorbals Disneyland crowd that makes the subject moot. BTW, unlike most of the posters, I was born and lived just around the corner from Gorbals Cross in Portugal Street. Re. Quinton Boyle: Hi, I was reading about your quest for your family. This might be a long shot but worth trying. There is a man on here from Australia - he is like yourself from the Gorbals and his name is Boyle. I do not know if he is Irish stock as you say or has red hair but he knows a lot of people from the past. He calls himself Tenquid as he says that's what it cost to emigrate in those days. I left the Gorbals (Camden Street) at a very early age, although I can still remember the bulldozers knocking down tenement after tenement. It's a pleasure to visit this message board and read anecdotes about where I spent the first 10 years of my life but I wish contributors would drop the 'parliamo' accents. I struggle to understand what it actually means, and do present day Glaswegian ex-pats really speak like that?
