DannyGill wrote:Hi Margaret, thanks for your reply yes I heard of "pasha" fags but never saw them as I was born in 1948 but I heard my uncles talking about them. Loosies that was the term given to the single cigarettes, I remember now. so when did you go to the states Margaret ?, Iv'e been there 4 times but that was a few weeks at a time in New York state and Pensylvania and New Jersey all for St Patrick's day celebrations. Take care and God Bless.margaretmcgettigan wrote:Yes, I remember Woodbine because my Dad smoked them, too...But do any of you remember Pasha that were sold during the war...If you wanted to buy five Woodbine then you had to buy five Pasha as well...They had a terrible smell to them..Now that I think of it, maybe they were Turkish cigarettes..When I started to smoke, probably at the age of fourteen, we used to buy "loosies" from a wee shop on Errol Street for I think a few pennies a piece...Smoked for about ten years and when I met my husband he hated the smell of smoke off of me so I gave them up...Best thing I ever did..By then I was here in the US and cigarettes were only 25 cents a pack of twenty..then I smoked Newport which was a menthol cigarette...Still being made here.

Re: Woodbines
Hi everyone did you not have to buy 5 woodbine and they took one out and put in a pasha.
I never smoked but my man smoked many a thing I got from the Embassy coupons I used to buy them of the boy who stayed next close to us but that was if I had any money left from the wages.
Site is begining to come busy now Admin doing a great job.

Re: Woodbines
Hi Amelia,
Yes the old Woodbines bring back many memories to our younger days and I agree the site is starting to pick up, the more people get the hang of how to post then the better. I must say at first Amelia it took me a wee while to get used to the new set up but now I understand how to use it I'm firing on all guns now. Looking forward to seeing a "a few old faces" back soon. Take care and God Bless.

Re: Woodbines
I remember buying 5 Bristol when I went to the Barrowland on a Saturday afternoon...then one night... (I slept beside my mammy) I woke her up looking under my pillow so she asked me what was I looking for..I said my 5 Bristol. The secret was out...because I was fast asleep, I thought I was in for it but it wasn't as bad as I thought...thanks mammy

Re: Woodbines
Hi Danny,
Just thought I would chip in on your "Woodbines" theme. My parents both smoked
and my mother smoked and saved Players no. 6 coupons and I was too young to smoke
when staying at Wellcroft Place. I remember going into the newsagent and instead of
buying a bottle of "ginger "irn -bru you could get a penny s worth in a glass. Finally
many thanks for your reply on the Cinema . The earliest film that I can remember was
"The Bowery Boys " This was a Saturday Matinee so you had to try and go every Sat.?
Best Regards
Reg

So the secret smoker got caught out ha ha, I think most of us when we were younger got caught out one way or the other, it was so cool to smoke in those days of our youth or so we thought. Some of the film stars smoked on screen and if we "could pretend to be them" then we were film stars too. I'm just thinking back now just how many brands of cigarettes were there back in our youthful days ?. Bristol that comes back to me now and Cadets too how many can you remember Rose ? anyone else got a good cigarette memory ?

I remember too getting a glass of "ginger" for an old penny, we used to buy a cinnamon stick and go to the pictures and light it and we boys thought we were smoking "cigars". I remember going to the Ritz picture house matinee and watching the Bowery boys too. Funny enough I was visiting New York and went down to China Town and just over the road was the Bowery where the Bowery boys "came from". I wrote my autobiography this year and I mentioned about visiting the Bowery 55 years after watching them in the picture house and my publisher put my photo of the Ritz cinema above my comments which I thought was great. Great days Reg we might not have had much money but what a great upbringing we had in the soo-side.
