There was a cinema on the corner of Eglinton St and Bedford St, it was called the Bedford. The cinerama was the Coliseum on Eglinton St.

Hi Josie and Reg.
In regards to the Cinerama [former or later Coliseum ?] does my memory serve me correct in saying that there was actually a bar in the foyer area and you could buy an alcoholic drink there in the interval time ?. I think the Molly Arms pub was close by to that picture house too ?, can you Josie or Reg or antone else confirm please, Thanks.

Going by the description of the renovations for the opening as Cinerama in 1963 there was a bar in the Foyer (it states that a new Bar was added)

Thanks for your reply, yes I said the Molly Arms [I'm an eejit] of course it was the Mally Arms and I did have a few beers in it when I was in my late teens. That's brilliant the links you posted about the cinema and the Mally Arms near to it, once again thanks Jimbo

There were 3 picture houses on Eglington St. The Bedford building still stands it is now a venue for bands and then the Coleseum was down from it going towards the town the "Gods" entrance was on Herbertson St. and then there was the EE'S proper name the Eglington Electoreum. Remember seeing the House of Wax starring Vincent Price. Your mother didn't like you to go to the Greens on Ballater St. remember seeing "The Outlaw" starring Jane Russell it was classed as a "dirty picture" because you saw Jane Russells cleavage.
When you think of it there were loads of picture houses on the Southside of Glasgow I think the last one to close was the Muirend up Clarkston Rd. I think it is now made into flats.
Right all you "old yins" lets see if you can remember some of the picture houses just on our side of the Clyde.from the Oatlands to Eglington St. and then going along to Paisley Rd then up to Shawlands, Cathcart, Mount Florida and Govanhill. This will keep your minds working and then we can add to it thats as long as the admin don't mind maybe they could play the game as well HA!HA!

Hi Amelia,
Now that is a very good question and I'm sure we'll be scratching the heid, let me say that the Ritz picture house on the corner of Caledonia/Rutherglen Rd [was half a minutes walk from Fauldhouse st where I lived], then the Paragon beside St Francis's Church, there was one in Crown st [name ?], also one close to Waddell st. The Odeon just up from the Plaza dance hall at Eglinton toll and one just beside Shawlands cross was it the Globe ?, the Toledo at Muirend/Cathcart that's the ones that spring to mind for me Amelia although there must be a lot more, thanks for the question take care and God Bless.

The cinema on Crown St. was called the George Cinema...although it was called the Crown in the beginning.

Thanks for the pic of the George...brought back great memories...that was the main cinema I went to...and the one at Shawlands Cross when I was much younger...forget what you call it
