A neighbour of mine from Oatlands used to work in the nut place under the bridge. Her daughter Cathie, posted on here a while ago about how she would go and help her Mother in there after school.
Attention: Gorbals Admin - I have sent Cathie an email asking her to get in touch with you to give you any further info she might have on this. Cheers, Sheila
Roast Chestnut seller in Railway arch
Re: Roast Chestnut seller in Railway arch
I remember the peanut man well,(dont think he ever sold chestnuts,)I am talking about the late sixties early seventies.I think he was gone by about 1972,73. He seemed old to us weans at the time, he was probaly about 55 then, grey hair and he had a speech impediment. He had an old machine which roasted the peanuts, I it had cogs on it and went round and round, as someone said it was the smell of the roasting peanuts that hit you as you got under the bridge. You could get salted peanuts which had about a ton of salt on them.He worked there on his own. We used to wind him up by going up to the counter and ask him for for a ticket for his staff dance. He would chase us down the street. You used to see the rats going in and out when it was closed, probaly eating the peanuts. Gone forever.Unfortunatly.
Re: Roast Chestnut seller in Railway arch
Dear Gorbals Admin,
I am unable to throw any light on the roast chestnut seller.
However when I lived in Wellcroft Place which joined Eglinton street at one end and if you went to the other end the road would bear left under some railway arches and through what was a dark tunnel and I can remember being frightened going through this black hole.
My request to the site members is does anyone remember the paint manufacturer/factoryat the end
of Wellcroft Place and I believe there was a bakery next to the paint factory and i can remember
getting coconut macaroons and eiffel tower cakes from the bakery all be it I think they were a day old
when I got them.!! My reason for this request is the fact that I wrote a poem about the Gorbals and it was about the Paint factory foreman who befriended my brother and Iand about a few anecdotes that I have
already posted on the site .
PS. I believe that the pub that I could see from my tenement was a Aitkens pub but it ended up
being called The" Office"

Hi Accobra, I'm trying to attach a pic of the Office Bar, with perhaps the factory in it, but it keeps saying the file is too big (although it's the same size as all my other pics). Is there some way you can Private Message me your e-mail address, and I'll send it to you.
Regards, Rose.

Hi, Rose, this is a free, online picture resizer > http://www.picresize.com/results
Edit: I should have pointed out that your original picture will not be changed but the resizer creates a copy which has a smaller file size for uploading while retaining the same on-screen physical size. You download this copy which will have a small r in front of the name for ease of recognition,

I sent an email to my friend Cathie who used to work in here with her Mother asking her for more info or to contact this site. No reply from her so I'll send another email to her.
Re: Roast Chestnut seller in Railway arch
Thanks for the link to the resizer, Jimbo. I'd already e-mailed the photo to him..I don't think it was what he was looking for

I remember this guy in Cleland St,he also sold toffee apples, different flavours of tablet.I can still see his face,I remember him having grey hair brushed back like in an Elvis style, just along from this was Scottish Farmers bottling plant,if you looked in you could see bottles on conveyer machine filling up with milk.thegorbals admin wrote:Over the years I've heard about someone who used to sell roast chestnuts from a small arch under a railway bridge somewhere in the Gorbals.
I was wondering if anyone had any details or memories of this at all? Was it only roast chestnuts?
At a launch event about ten years ago there was someone roasting chestnuts by way of a throw back to this seller but I have not managed to hear from anyone with a clear specific recollection of this.
I've heard the tale recounted so many times I have almost imagined seeing this person even in my own life time which is doubtless unlikely.
Without reference to google it would be interesting to know of anyone with their own memories of such a seller? Or am I just nuts!

I used to buy hot peanuts, tablet, toffee apples, macaroon bars before going to the Palace picture hall,on other days would go to the public swimming baths in Gorbals St across from the palace. Those were great days!Adelphi wrote:This shop was under the bridge in Cleland St. If my memory serves me well He was a Grey haired Man who wore glasses and I think he had a turn in his eye.
