Hi Jimbo
What a list of cigarette names that I completely forgot about, yes Strand was the first cig I remember advertised on TV . I think if I remember correctly it showed a man on a wet/windy night in white raincoat turning his back on to a shop front to strike a light and smoke his Strand cig. Then a voice said you're never alone with a Strand, oh and the Domino cigarettes are an other brand I spotted in your Link Jimbo plus the poem/story about all the different brands brought a chuckle to my face. Then when you started work and got a weekly wage it was off to the shops in the Toon and buy an American brand, my favourite brand was Lucky Strike and it made me feel like a film star. We never really knew about all the health scares in those far off days of our youth, well I started smoking big time when I started work and had the money to do so and was drinking in Pubs when I was 16 years old. A lot of the other bricklayers I worked with smoked roll up tobacco like Golden Virginia or Old Holborn with Rizla cig papers during the week when money was tight until we got paid then we became "weekend millionaires" with the Tailor made gigs then skint for the rest of the week ha ha.

Danny, the trouble with Strand was that no one wanted to be a loner/loser like the dork in the advert!! Epic fail!! Strand went down the Tubes!

Danny

I am gradually viewing more and more posts and I understand that you haave written or are
writing a book on the Gorbals.
If this is true I would be very interested in some details please.
One aspect of living there and for those of us who were getting "Free Meals " at scool was when
you went to another school on a Saturday lunchtime, and in my case we went to Strathbungo
School, but because a lot of the older boys there were messing about when the Dinner Ladies
were dishing out the dinners the older boys would pretend they had not had any and were hiding plates under the table. It was "Stovies " and i did not get any and had to be content with a pudding only.
on some days.
I am living abroad now but am going to attempt to fly over to uk. tomorrow
so wish me luck. I will be away for about ten days so be patient for a reply .

Enjoying the banter.

ps. Will let you know about a football legend who came to our " Single End"
The liverpool legend Billy Liddell!!!

Best Regards Reg :)

Hi Reg,
Glad you're enjoying the Gorbals anecdotes [so am I :) ] and it's great all the people writing in with everyone sharing their memories and Jimbo with all all the links he shares, glad you're paying a visit Reg but the weather here is cold at the moment .
Actually it was my autobiography that I wrote , I do mention the Gorbals in my book and with a few photos that were given to me by Glasgow City council and Norrie McNamee, cut a long story short Reg I left Glasgow in 1968 to build bricks halfway round the world, was involved in Irish Politics for 10 years where my life got threatend on numerous occasions, eventually settling in London England, getting married having kids etc and in between all this living a colourful life. If you wanted to have a look at the first two chapters of my life [Chap 1 growing up in Glasgow,Chap 2 starting work] go online to Amazon, their e-books [kindle] and type in" have trowel will travel" and you can look inside my book

Danny :)
