Hi Jimbo

Thanks so much for posting those websites...when I saw the Waverely that took me back to a Saturday afternoon...we used to scour the churches for a scramble to get money for the pictures..and then went to a cafe I think was called 'The Swallow' for an ice cream. I remember this cafe had the biggest boxes of chocolates I have ever seen and the were on a shelf high up behind the counter.

Thanks for bringing back some memories.

Hi Jimbo. Danny. Josie & Redscot you are all doing great but you have missed one in Shawlands, give you a clue it's a name of an animal HA!HA! One of the picture houses old buildings still stands it's right right facing Shawlands academy on a corner and when you go down it it takes you out to Minard road. Redcoat there is a big cafe on tha same corner at Minard road was that the cafe you went to as it has been there for years??
Jimbo all your sites are brilliant, I'll have to stop coming on here as my housework is getting neglected maybe hire a wee cleaning lady if the goverment would put my pension up to pay for it. Now how about the Govanhill area how many??? went to them all looking for talent (never got any) couldn't have been good looking in my younger days to attract them.

I'm sure there was an Elephant in Shawlands!

Edit: I knew I should have looked for the Elephant! > http://www.scottishcinemas.org.uk/glasgow/elephant.html

'nother Edit!: interesting trivia about A.E. Pickard (first owner of the "White Elephant") http://www.monklands.co.uk/pans/pickard.htm

Frank
Thanks for reply but my memories are mainly as a 5 to 7 year old and although
in the blink of an eye all those years have come and gone I think I like most other folk
living in the Gorbals then were all although we did not know it at the time in "survival"
mode. I ran the Glasgow Marathon in 1986 and we finished at The Glasgow Green
but my everlasting memory was apart from getting two Mars bars at end was
running through the Gorbals and lots of children were standing holding sweets up for the
runners to take. The sugar in take for me was great but for me I was overwhelmed by there
generosity. Once again thanks and if you wish to give me an up date on Big John then
