I think the pub in St Enoch's square might have been the "Maxwell Arms" it was right on the corner of Maxwell st [if I remember right] there was a downstairs restaurant in the square called the Square peg which I believe had a bar upstairs but going along a bit there was a pub called "the old Eagle inn" or was it the Swiss something or other ?.

Hi Danny
You know none of those names rings a bell with me, I'll have to ask my auntie as she got me the job. I always remember taking this guys order and he wanted a Drambuie...well other than a Carlsberg special I had no idea what a Drambuie was...but they guy was so nice about it when I explained I was just learning the ropes. There was a shop in St Enochs' Square where the young guys would go to get their shirts made by this tailor, (Colin mentions it in one of his books)...well the pub I speak about was a couple of doors up from there, but don't think it was right on the corner....but I'll find out as it can be really annoying trying to remember a place from years ago.
Hope that ingrown toenail is a bit better Danny.

Hi Rose,

I was just telling my other half the other night about how I used to go to St Enoch's Square every Saturday afternoon where I would visit the Taylor just up above ( first floor if I remember right ) the Square Peg. I think they were Jewish Taylors and they were terrific at their job and they used to let you pay weekly for your shirts. Great shirts, Taylor made, button down collar with a pleat up the back, quality. I even had a Midnight Blue velvet jacket made by them, it was beautiful and I loved it so much that I wore it all the time, for years. The girls loved it too, I can tell you ;) ;) ;)

Take care.

It said it was once called the kind man then Strathies then back to the kind man and my friend Rose Doyle also mentioned she couldn't place it either. That review was on the same page. I was only pointing out that as time goes by peoples attitudes do also. As many years ago places were more customer friendly compared to these days. Also I was not being offensive and never would be offensive to my elders, I have too much respect for people. I apologise if anyone on here felt ANY of my comments have been offensive. I enjoy reading the stories on here.
I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with Granny911...lots of times when people make a post your reply to them has to be sarcastic in some way, and you always seem to give negative comments in return. When John spoke of revisiting a house he holds so dear you had to tell him about it being the worst street etc...as opposed to not wishing him well in his quest to re visit the house. Then Granny911 posted about Kenny Miller and you had to ask was it a Kenny Miller fan club. Now again, we are at the Kind Man and research from you suggests it's one of the worst pubs and we had to read about some woman with IBS...again all negative comments when the posts said about great times there in the 1960's. Then you posted to Granny911 you have more respect for your elders...how on earth do you know Granny 911 is an elder...you don't so all we can take from that is an insult. But what surprises me most is...there has been no post from you on this thread titled "The Clutha" giving your condolences to victims and their families....wonder why that is. Perhaps if you were a bit nicer and stop correcting people all the time when they post something, or researching so you can come back and leave negative comments...then we can all get on with what this site is all about...anecdotes.
Of course this is only my opinion, and as we are entitled to free speech in a democratic society I felt the need to give my opinion.

Hi Rose,

You are absolutely right in what you say. This site is always about reminiscing and touching base with lost friends and sharing memories on a subject posted by a fellow member. In fact, we might not realise it but there is a good possibility that we have all met in our fruitful lives in Glasgow! Wouldn't it be great to think so, what a joy just thinking about that one and I'm sure we all have thought that and from my part it always leaves me with a warm feeling. That's what life is about!

Take care.

Hi John & Rosemary

The negative quote re the Kind Man has been deleted by Josie Stukis but she's pointed out that it remains on this thread due to being re-quoted by us. I have edited my post to remove the quote and would really appreciate if you could do the same. Thanks very much. Sheila

Hi Sheila,
I agree with everything you said. Like you I used to use the pub back in the same time frame, so I guess we must have bumped in to each other at some stage you know! I was just married in 1969 and my wife and I lived in Carfin St for a couple of years, so we used to go to the pub every weekend, the music and the people were great, we always had a good time there. In fact the band that played there used to play all the latest hit songs and we used to persuade them to play " Take the ribbon from my hair " and you wont believe it, every time we walked in the door they would play that song for us without having to request it.....
Magic!!!!

Take care,

John[/quote]

Hi John
Well it's a small world isn't it? Feel sure our paths would have crossed while in the Kind Man. Was that wee Jimmy Greig's (think that was his name) band that were in their during your visits? I remember them singing "take the ribbons from my hair", loved it! Also loved it when Jimmy sang "Red red wine" Another wee guy in the band used to sing only one song but sang it every week "sea cruise". Imagine you and the wife getting serenaded with your own special song, that's brilliant! What I loved about the clientele was they were from everywhere, Castlemilk, The Gorbals, Toryglen, Mount Florida, Springburn, Govanhill, a few from Oatlands, Merrylee, etc etc. and were just a real mix of people and according to the bar Manager I knew them all! No nonsense about religion, just everyone enjoying themselves. Quite a few married couples or engaged couples and lots of singles hoping for lumbers. I used to go there with a large group of my pals, about 10 of us. As a matter of fact John I kept meaning to mention this to you, one of my pals came from Blaeloch (can't recall the number though) her name was Sandra Williams and Sandra would be with us at the Kind Man. Those were the days right enough as you said John, "Magic". Cheers, Sheila

Hi John

Your edit worked fine.

Have been reading about the funerals of the victims, it's just so sad, my heart breaks for their poor families and friends. Also terrible time of the year too, it will be so hard for the survivors, and the victim's families and friends to get through this season. Hope they are all surrounded by supportive people, strength and love. My thoughts are with them all. Sheila

Hi Sheila & Gang,
Been away for a bit and I could not let this tragedy pass without saying a few words.
Horrified and deeply saddened that this incident should spoil so many folk,s Christmas,s .and some people have lost not just loved ones but "breadwinners" so there is probably some real hardship for them till things are sorted out. Does anyone know if any newspaper or individual set up a "Contingency " Fund etc. etc.??
I personally would donate to this and i am sure i am not alone!!
I am also proud to hear that our fellow Glaswegians stayed behind in that "hour of need" moments after it occurred .

I would add that although I know they get paid for a job that i would never do hundreds of the
Strathclyde police put in as much as 27 hour shifts virtually continuously in what were very trying
conditions as I feel sure that the three folk in the Helicopter must have been a right mess.
Once again I just wanted to post my condolences and sadness felt on hearing of this tragedy and
on a brighter note can I wish you and the "Gang " a very Merry Christmas " and a healthy New Year
when it comes.!!

Best Regards Reg
