Wee story, One visit back to Scotland I visited the Southern Necropolis. I used to live at 197 Caledonia road overlooking the cemetary. The tombstones make marvelous reading so I spent some time wandering around. I came across a wee man leaning on a brush and I asked him if he was the custodian. He replied "Naw, Ah jist look efter the place"!

Bernadette Burns (Ireland) If your uncle was a Catholic and died in the Gorbals the only graveyards Catholics went to were either Dalbeth which is out at Parhead direction if you know Glasgow on the way to Celtic Park, The other cemetaries are St. Convilles which is on the Southside of Glasgow up by Pollok and the other is St. Kentigerns which is in the north side of the city these are the only Catholic graveyards in Glasgow that I know of but then people are being buried in other graveyards now it doesn't have to be Catholic ones. As for the pawn next to St Johns I cannot remember there being a pawn there as that was the chapel that I went to it is now demolished and highrise flats are in it's place (SAD) as it was a beautiful chapel all marble I wonder what happened to it all. Hope you find out something.

I am currently working on an architecture project on the architect Sir Basil Spence. I would be interested to hear from anyone who used to live in the Hutchesontown 'C' blocks Spence built. I am also interested to hear from anyone from the Gorbals area with any memories, stories or opinions on Spence's contribution to the area.

Well I see this is the start of the Glasgow FAIR, I have some great memories of the fair especially the shows in the Glasgow Green and the great crowds at the railway stations, bus stations and at the Broomielaw getting on the boat for a trip down the river to Rothesay. I am sure the Glasgow folk world wide will have some great memories of those gone by days.

I stayed in the Gorbals till I was 14 then moved to Tollcross. I went to Abbotsford then Adelphi. I stayed in Surrey St. I had a pal Margaret McManus who lived above me.

John Mulligan, I remember Reetas fashions in the Gallowgate and I also remember your auntie Stella she went to Canada, I worked with her young sister Angie in the schools also remember your father Eddie, Joe, Peter and Margaret cannot remember John but knew of him. Also remember you but you wouldn't remember or know me now "old, grey hair, false teeth, glasses and worse of all I'm all out of shape HA!HA!, but then my husband Jerry isn't much better he's baldy (got a couple of stragglers) wears glasses, false teeth and a beer belly HA!HA!

Hello just writing to say that my mother (born in Glenswilly, Donegal) grew up in the Gorbals. Forget what street but once she sees the e-mail I sent her with the website she'll be on non-stop I'm sure. Anyway, her maiden name is Mary Maguire...and my grandparents are Mary Boyle (now Govanhill) and the late John Boyle. My mom came out to the states in '63 when she was 18. Well if anyone would like to get back to me please feel free. Take care! PS Can't wait to get back to Glasgow this year or next!

Hi Norma, like yourself I and my five brothers and sisters were born at 121 lawmoor st. Also my father and his seven brothers were also born there, previously named south wellington st. We moved from there in 1939 to a new house in Pollokshaws but still visited some of the old neighbours. The Mrs Smith that you speak of I’m sure is the same old lady that I used to run the odd messages for (mostly snuff) she and Mr Smith were good friends of my paternal grandfather who stayed with them on and off whenever he fell out with my father which was quite often. I'm sorry that I can't tell you more about the family, Mr Smith I believe was a Carter, the neighbours as I remember were as follows; Bottom flat: the Carden family, Annie Collins, the Sangster family who moved to the same road as ourselves in Pollokshaws in 1939. 1 up: Mr & Mrs Smith, the Masterton family, who moved to Carnwadric in 1939, the McQuade family. 2 up: Mr Stewart, the Daly family, the O'Rourke family. 3 up: the Cauley family, the Brennen family and finally ourselves the Carruthers family. The Daly’s later moved into our room & kitchen flat, Tommy Daly was my best pal and who sadly passed away some years later, His sister Bridget (Macgregor) who I still see occasionally, married and moved into Annie Collins house after Annie’s death. Prior to posting this I met Bridget in shawlands today friday, she remembers you well and sends her regards and asked me to mention a relative of hers you know Mary Young. Regards, Davie Carruthers.

I am trying to get info/history on the family members I have never known. My mom, Ann Hill was born in Dumfries, 1955, her father is Alfred Hill, whose mother is, I believe, Margaret Curley. Alfred married Christine (last name now unknown). The family moved to Canada (Ontario) in the early 1960's. Christine left Alfred Hill, who then married a woman by the name of Kathleen. I have heard my great grandma Margaret Curley has passed away approximatley early 90's. I would like any info on any of my distant relatives still residing in Dumfries, or Scotland. Thank you for any help!

I remember Dr.Gladstone Robertson, we lived in South Portland St he was our family doctor. There were 5 of us and if one of us was sick when he came to examine one of us he examined the lot. If I remember he had a swollen left cheek. Very jolly and used to make us laugh.

This may be a long shot but nothing ventured and all that. Firstly, my mum and dad both went to the Gorbals to work, I'm talking 1930's mid to late. My mums maiden name was Agnes Quinn and my dads name was Paddy Baxter. When mum first arrived in Glasgow she lived at 122 Hospital Street. She worked in a fish shop in Crown Street, it was apparently run by an Italian couple, went by the name of Louis ande Lizzie. She went to St John's Chapel and also worked in Woolworths Cafeteria in Sauchiehall St. My dad lodged with a Mrs Eccles in the Gorbals, they had fond memories of their stay in Glasgow, however my dad is no longer with us sadly he died 21 years ago. Love to hear from anyone who knew him or mum. My appeal is not yet thru tho I am trying to research my grandads family from Meenmore in County Donegal. I have it on good authority that his parents ran a pawn shop and it was sited at the entrance to St John's chapel, any information on this would be fantastic. Also, my uncle, mums brother Anthony Quinn lived in the area and I would be grateful for any information on him. I do know he died on this there but I would like to know where he is buried, their other sister Annie Tinney lived in Millerston rd at one time and my mum stayed with her till she came back to Ireland to get married. Hope somebody will be able to shed some light on my queries, I just came across this site today be default and started reading I knew all the street names from hearing mum and dad talk of them. Look forward to hearing from someone.

Don't think anyone will know me. Lived at 79 Florence St until my teens. Parent Liz & Jim. sisters Greta and Bette. Attended Camden St and then Strathbungo. Went to Bermuda then on to NZ. Presently visiting Helen & Bill McKinlay who live in Toronto. My sisters still stay around Glasgow so I visit regularly. We did Ok and I am still teaching. My husband John died last year from Cancer. Hi, can anyone help? I am searching for information about Francis Shields he was married to Mary Lapping, around 1875-76. Mary was born in Calton Glasgow, I believe Francis to be Irish, they had a son John who married Christina Glover in Buckhaven Fife 1896 on the marriage certificate & 1901 census John was down as born in Lanarkshire. Does anyone have any info that could help me, I have been looking for quite some time now, but with no joy. Thanks in anticipation Jane
