Would anyone know what happened to the Ritchies of Portugal St (1940's-50's) A George Ritchie is on my family tree. From his death cert, It states the informant is a P Ritchie...his son. If any Ritchies are out there, I have lots of info for you! Ruth

To molly McAdam, I remember well the old swing park opposite the Old Ferry Bar at Waterside street. I was born in Turnlaw street which was at the bottom of Waterside street just before the cuddys brae and lived there until I married in 1961. My folks lived in Turnlaw street from 1931 until joining me in OZ in 1982. We used to call the old swing park "the Dixie" but I have no idea if that was it's original name. I think all us kids in that era spent time at the "Mollsy" jumping the burns or watching the slag being tipped. I went to Hayfied street primary from 45 to 51 and then on to John street (via the Cuddy brae, the White bridge and the "Green") from 51 to 54. Hi to anyone out there who remembers Alex & Cathy Meldrum & sons Alex and Ronnie.

My Great granny Mary Jane Gallacher was born in 1857 at 33 Cumberland Lane, Gorbals. There is a family story that she had a small pension from a benefactor who had made some money and gifted this small pension to every child who was born in Cumberland Lane. Does anyone have any information about this. Thank you.

I was brought up in a 2 bedroom council house 17 of us in a part of rutherglen rd, there was an empty park we called it the old swings. Does anyone know if there ever was swings there? We tied rope to trees to swing on. It was at waterside st where we lived and up rutherglen rd to opposite the ritz picture house.

F.A.O. Andy Daniel McAslin Street is in the Townhead or Garngad district but it has all changed now. We had friends who stayed there but they were in a new house so I gather most of the old tenenments are torn down now. You go right up High street if you are coming fro the Southside of Glasgow and when you reach The Royal Infirmary you fork of to the left and it is next to St Mungos RC school and cathedral. Alan Keith lived at 60 Cavendish St Gorbals - Would love to hear from old friends. Looking through this website sure brings back the memories. I was born in Eglinton Street in 1937. We moved to 56 Surrey Street in 1942. Does anyone remeber the strange close that 56 had with the air-raid shelter beside the stairs? You walked up off the street to get to the 'lobbies' and the houses. Been trying for years to get a photograph of 56 but to no avail. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. I went to Abbostford School from 1942 til 1949. Then Adelphi from '49 to '52. It would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me or my sister Mary or brother John, who recently passed away.

Trying to find anything on the McInally family who lived in the Gorbals in the late 1800's. Charles McInally and Ellen McWilliams had at least 6 chidren. Nancy, Joseph, Charles, Sarah, Daniel and Thomas. My widowed gt grandfather married Sarah McInally who was 30 yrs his junior...in 1902. After my gt grandad died in 1918, Sarah re married a George Ritchie in 1918. My family, the Franks, lived in the Gorbals (Portland St and Abbotsford Place) before moving to Dixon Avenue in Govanhill. My grandfather Charles Frank ran a camera shop in the Saltmarket which was pretty well known - opened in 1908. My aunt, Hannah Frank, now 97, is an artist and sculptor and is the last of the four Frank siblings - you can see her work on http://www.hannahfrank.org.uk. There was a well-reviewed exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute earlier this year (06) and a centenary exhibition is due to open at Glasgow University Chapel on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. I am currently editing her early diaries and though they start after she moved to Dixon Ave, there are many references to Geneen's Restaurant and to her grandfather's shop, Lipetz's Oil Merchants in Hospital Street.

Do I qualify as a Gorbalite/Gorbalonian - what's the correct terminology??? I grew up in Oatlands, but knew the Gorbals like the back of me hand, that would be the "old" Gorbals of the 'Forties and 'Fifties, gaslit streets ect, lots of laughs..salt of the earth the people.

I am trying to research my family tree and would be grateful for any help. My father James McCloud Gray was born in 1925 at 33Clyde Place. His mother was Sarah Gray who was employed as a domedstic servant according to his birth certificate. As the name of his father is not on the birth certificate, I was wondering whether 33 Clyde Place was an institution eg Salvation Army etc during the 20`s. I am trying to find out where "Macauslin Street" used to be. Sorry for the spelling but I was only a wee lad when I lived there. It probably has nothing to do with the Gorbals but you are the best people to ask. I can mind we had two rooms and a kitchen and father worked on the railway. When mother got TB me and my sister were put in a home and I don't know where that was either. If anyone can shed any light on these questions for me I would be most obliged. Silly me, forgot to say we lived there in the mid 1950's and then moved to Argyll.

Please help and ask questions for us as it is difficult from the other end of the world to get information. Trying to find urgently - 1st World War medals with the name Capt.L.S. Jennings on the back. They were sent to MacCallums in Edinburgh as the wife had moved and remarried around 1920. The medals should have gone to his only brother, my grandfather in NZ. Could anyone who knows any MacCallums conected to universities in scotland please ask them - as we just hope the medals have not ended up being sold or lost as they are an important part of our family history as our Captain Jennings died in France during the war.

I remember the Ryan family very well. I think the mam was called mamie Ryan. My sister Mary Rorke was friends with Anne Marie Ryan. We lived at 60 Kidson Street. The Ryan family lived on the top floor, at No 64, I think, next close to us. One thing I recall is that on Sundays a very kind woman, we all called Auntie Betty took us to Sunday School. All us weans went up in cars to Govanhill. Marie Bruce, Marjorie Ross, Kenneth Lennie. John Cuthbertson. Linda Grant, myself, (Mildred Rorke), my sister Mary Rorke, my cousins Alex and Marie Bruce. F.A.O - Amelia McKinley, now that you have jogged my memory, I do remember your sister annie and mary ward. Btw what are they doing these days? Regarding salsbury street I was born and brought up at 40 warwick street (158 nicholson street), the close just down from the fruit shop at the corner of bedford street and across the street from the "double eagle" pub. I had two very good friends who also worked in the bond, gerald o"hagan and martha mcguire, they were best man and bridesmaid at my wedding in 1956 and they married a year later. Howye, I noticed somebody asking what the name of the Bakery In Ballater Street was, it was WIllie marx Bakery, they also mentioned the gravy, the gravy was grease you bit the pie and drained the grease and had the tastiest pie in Glasgow.

Hoping someone will be able to help me get the next stage in my research started. Census records show my granda to have been born in scotland, I do know the year but what I dont know is where i can get hold of a birth cert. for him. His parents are supposed to have been in the rag store trade, Portugal St i am led to believe beside St johns chapel. Being as poverty stricken as the rest of the folk in the Gorbals it was a good day when the gas man came to empty the meters. He'd get up on a chair to retrieve the metal box from the gas meter which sat on a shelf just inside the front door. When he emptied the contents onto the kitchen table and counted them out, my mother was anxious to see how much "rebate" she'd get. That rebate often meant the difference between having nothing except maybe toast for dinner or sausage and egg. In the 40s and 50s we inserted coins into the slot in the meter and turned a dial that gave us so much gas power until the dial returned to zero at which point it had to be "fed" again. I also remember several incidences when thieves and vandals broke into houses and ripped out the meters for the cash contents - leaving many a dangerous situation for tenants. Good old days, eh?

Great Site!!! Actually recognized names on it. My mother was born and raised in the Gorbals, 10 Abbotsford Place to be precise, and my dad's family were from Crown Street. Two of my aunts owned deli's in the area, Pearl Bloch and Sarah Cohen. I know Auntie Sarah's was opposite the wee park but can't remember the name of the street it was on, and Auntie Pearl's was on a wee side street, can't remember the name of that one either. My mother's maiden name was Haniford, and yes I remember Genenee's, and the butcher, and lots of other places. I also remember sneaking into the Bedford Cinema and seeing The Ten Commandments when it first opened at the Colliseum. Great Days.

F.A.O. Andy Daniel McAslin Street is in the Townhead or Garngad district but it has all changed now. We had friends who stayed there but they were in a new house so I gather most of the old tenenments are torn down now. You go right up High street if you are coming fro the Southside of Glasgow and when you reach The Royal Infirmary you fork of to the left and it is next to St Mungos RC school and cathedral. Alan Keith lived at 60 Cavendish St Gorbals - Would love to hear from old friends. Family Names, Purvis, Grant, Kerr, McKinnon, Kilday, Bonnar, Bell, Marshall, Baird, Halliday, McSporran, Motherwell, Craig, Richies, and all others. We all ran together at the Cavendish/Eglinton St corner around the forties and fifties years.

I lived at 56 Surrey St from 1941 to 1953 and I went to Abbotsford Primary. We moved to Househillwood in 1953. My uncle Duncan had a rag store under the railway bridge at the corner of Surrey St and Cumberland St. Would love to hear from old friends . My name then was Mary Matheson.

Looking through this website sure brings back the memories. I was born in Eglinton Street in 1937. We moved to 56 Surrey Street in 1942. Does anyone remeber the strange close that 56 had with the air-raid shelter beside the stairs? You walked up off the street to get to the 'lobbies' and the houses. Been trying for years to get a photograph of 56 but to no avail. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. I went to Abbostford School from 1942 til 1949. Then Adelphi from '49 to '52. It would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me or my sister Mary or brother John, who recently passed away.

Trying to find anything on the McInally family who lived in the Gorbals in the late 1800's. Charles McInally and Ellen McWilliams had at least 6 chidren. Nancy, Joseph, Charles, Sarah, Daniel and Thomas. My widowed gt grandfather married Sarah McInally who was 30 yrs his junior...in 1902. After my gt grandad died in 1918, Sarah re married a George Ritchie in 1918. I would love to know more about the McInally family...maybe there is a photo of my gt grandad Robert McDonald and his new young wife somewhere out there??? Ruth

My family, the Franks, lived in the Gorbals (Portland St and Abbotsford Place) before moving to Dixon Avenue in Govanhill. My grandfather Charles Frank ran a camera shop in the Saltmarket which was pretty well known - opened in 1908. My aunt, Hannah Frank, now 97, is an artist and sculptor and is the last of the four Frank siblings - you can see her work on http://www.hannahfrank.org.uk. There was a well-reviewed exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute earlier this year (06) and a centenary exhibition is due to open at Glasgow University Chapel on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. I am currently editing her early diaries and though they start after she moved to Dixon Ave, there are many references to Geneen's Restaurant and to her grandfather's shop, Lipetz's Oil Merchants in Hospital Street.

Do I qualify as a Gorbalite/Gorbalonian - what's the correct terminology??? I grew up in Oatlands, but knew the Gorbals like the back of me hand, that would be the "old" Gorbals of the 'Forties and 'Fifties, gaslit streets ect, lots of laughs..salt of the earth the people.

I am trying to research my family tree and would be grateful for any help. My father James McCloud Gray was born in 1925 at 33Clyde Place. His mother was Sarah Gray who was employed as a domedstic servant according to his birth certificate. As the name of his father is not on the birth certificate, I was wondering whether 33 Clyde Place was an institution eg Salvation Army etc during the 20`s. I would be grateful for any information from anyone who may have knew either a Sarah Gray or 33 Clyde Placein 1925. Regards

It probably has nothing to do with the Gorbals but you are the best people to ask. I can mind we had two rooms and a kitchen and father worked on the railway. When mother got TB me and my sister were put in a home and I don't know where that was either. If anyone can shed any light on these questions for me I would be most obliged. Silly me, forgot to say we lived there in the mid 1950's and then moved to Argyll.

Please help and ask questions for us as it is difficult from the other end of the world to get information. Trying to find urgently - 1st World War medals with the name Capt.L.S. Jennings on the back. They were sent to MacCallums in Edinburgh as the wife had moved and remarried around 1920. The medals should have gone to his only brother, my grandfather in NZ. Could anyone who knows any MacCallums conected to universities in scotland please ask them - as we just hope the medals have not ended up being sold or lost as they are an important part of our family history as our Captain Jennings died in France during the war.

I remember the Ryan family very well. I think the mam was called mamie Ryan. My sister Mary Rorke was friends with Anne Marie Ryan. We lived at 60 Kidson Street. The Ryan family lived on the top floor, at No 64, I think, next close to us. One thing I recall is that on Sundays a very kind woman, we all called Auntie Betty took us to Sunday School. All us weans went up in cars to Govanhill. Marie Bruce, Marjorie Ross, Kenneth Lennie. John Cuthbertson. Linda Grant, myself, (Mildred Rorke), my sister Mary Rorke, my cousins Alex and Marie Bruce. I was friends with Anne Ryan, Marylyn Greer and Linda Grant. Lillian Watt. Shops I remember are Mrs Scotts, Welches, Mrs Hones'

F.A.O - Amelia McKinley, now that you have jogged my memory, I do remember your sister annie and mary ward. Btw what are they doing these days? Regarding salsbury street I was born and brought up at 40 warwick street (158 nicholson street), the close just down from the fruit shop at the corner of bedford street and across the street from the "double eagle" pub. I had two very good friends who also worked in the bond, gerald o"hagan and martha mcguire, they were best man and bridesmaid at my wedding in 1956 and they married a year later. Howye, I noticed somebody asking what the name of the Bakery In Ballater Street was, it was WIllie marx Bakery, they also mentioned the gravy, the gravy was grease you bit the pie and drained the grease and had the tastiest pie in Glasgow.

Census records show my granda to have been born in scotland, I do know the year but what I dont know is where i can get hold of a birth cert. for him. His parents are supposed to have been in the rag store trade, Portugal St i am led to believe beside St johns chapel. Being as poverty stricken as the rest of the folk in the Gorbals it was a good day when the gas man came to empty the meters. He'd get up on a chair to retrieve the metal box from the gas meter which sat on a shelf just inside the front door. When he emptied the contents onto the kitchen table and counted them out, my mother was anxious to see how much "rebate" she'd get. That rebate often meant the difference between having nothing except maybe toast for dinner or sausage and egg. In the 40s and 50s we inserted coins into the slot in the meter and turned a dial that gave us so much gas power until the dial returned to zero at which point it had to be "fed" again. I also remember several incidences when thieves and vandals broke into houses and ripped out the meters for the cash contents - leaving many a dangerous situation for tenants. Good old days, eh?

Great Site!!! Actually recognized names on it. My mother was born and raised in the Gorbals, 10 Abbotsford Place to be precise, and my dad's family were from Crown Street. Two of my aunts owned deli's in the area, Pearl Bloch and Sarah Cohen. I know Auntie Sarah's was opposite the wee park but can't remember the name of the street it was on, and Auntie Pearl's was on a wee side street, can't remember the name of that one either. My mother's maiden name was Haniford, and yes I remember Genenee's, and the butcher, and lots of other places. I also remember sneaking into the Bedford Cinema and seeing The Ten Commandments when it first opened at the Colliseum. Great Days.
