Just noticed a mistake in an earlier post I made - should have read my dad Gerry married Helen Kelly from Polmadie in the early 60s. Our house was destroyed by fire, thought I should put the record straight before they read the earlier post and cut me out the will, still thoroughly enjoying the site keep it up.

Hi all didnt grow up in the Gorbals but spent much time there as parent and grandparent lived there for many years. Father is Paddy Crerand and grandmother Sarah. Dad grew up in his mothers house, fed up reading stories brought up by aunt. Not true spent all school holidays in dads mums house.

Does anyone know the meaning of giving a "christening piece" when a child is being baptised, "don't know if non catholics do it". My niece who is an "expat" living in Winnipeg grandson was getting baptised and she wanted to do this and people were asking her what was the meaning behind this. All she could tell them it was done in the Gorbals where she was born, so can anyone help??

I was born in 1956 and spent the first six years of my life at 125 Florence St. My dad also stayed there as a child. He had two brothers, Tommy, James and a sister Theresa who all live in Canada now. My grandfather Tommy and his second wife Ida stayed next door to us. My dad, Gerry married my mum Helen Kelly from Polmadie in the early 60's. Our house was destroyed by fire and we moved to South Nitshill but I still have some nice memories of the Gorbals. Is there anyone out there who remembers any of my family. Congratulations on this site it is brilliant.

John Mitchell (1908-1928) was born in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, and emigrated to Canada as an apprentice clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company. The poor lad lost his life by drowning on September 2, 1928 at Pine Ridge/Gold Pines, near Red Lake, Ontario. His mother, Annie Mitchell, lived at 14 Cairntrodlie in Peterhead and arranged to have her boy's body shipped back to Peterhead. I wonder if any might be willing to locate and photograph his headstone? Should there be any family, I would be over the moon to hear from you. Does anyone remember my mother or grandparents? My mother's name is Isabella (Isa born 1928) Smith and her parents were May (nee McFarlane) and James. They lived at 228 and 138 Naburn St then moved to 269 Caledonia Rd. There were also 3 sons, James & Tommy who were twins and Ronnie who was the youngest. My Mum and her brothers went to Camden St then Adelphi Terrace. My grandfather had 2 brothers, John and Bertie who lived in Hospital St and married Jean Carroll. My grandmother had a sister Cathie (Katie) and a brother Tommy who was nicknamed Mac. Would like to hear from anyone who remembers them.

My mum, May Atkinson lived in Silver Fir Street until she married my dad Bill Russell from Wolesley Street in 1937. I'm searching for info. F.A.O Chef Eddie - Tam introduced me to Sammy Wilson in Naburn st were he lived as his brother (nothin like each other), Tam came from the oatlands across from the RITZ pictures. We worked together on the castlemilk scheme and carried coal from pollokshaws coal ree not for any relations. He went to Bonnies, we boxed with each other he sent u a telegram when he thru a punch and u had time to read it minutes before it arrived! We ran about together he told me Tarzan was his cousin from around rutherglen rd, the same guy in the book "SENSE OF FREEDOM". If the same Tam he would be 68yrs old now. I am trying to find any information about Duncan McLean Hutchison born in 1925 at 81 Rosebery (Roseberry) Street, Glasgow. His father was also Duncan McLean Hutchison and his mother Isabella (nee Gourlay). When his father and mother were married in 1922, they both lived at 118 Waddell Street, Glasgow. Witnesses to the marriage were David Hutchison (also of 118 Waddell Street) and Eva Stoddart of 46 Pollock Street. Duncan’s grandfather was also called Duncan McLean Hutchison, so the name may have been used throughout later male descendants. Also Isabella’s mother was also an Isabella, so that name may also have been used throughout later female generations. I would be grateful if anyone can provide any information on any of the above people or their descendants. Thank you, John Bamford.

My dad was Robert Wilson (Bobby) he lived in Crown Street, he had 2 brothers one older, Gus and one younger, Joe, they lived in the same close as their grandparents, Agnes & Paddy. Their mum was "Big" Mary and she was a clippie on the trams and then the buses and nobody messed with her! My dad attended St Lukes Primary until he was 15 and then started his apprenticeship as a painter and decorator. If anyone remembers them could you drop me a line at my email address, he passed away last year and i'm looking for any wee stories about him from any friends or ex work colleagues.

The enquiry re: John Ross and family. My dad was a John Ross, who was born in Sandiefaulds St 1916. He went to Hayfield Primary. When I was younger (20) forty years ago, we went across to Bridgeton to meet his relatives. We met in a pub at the bottom of Abercromby St. Up to that day I did not know I had relatives in Bridgeton, as we were always warned about going there, as it was full of bad people. Turned out he jokingly meant my cousins! Have asked around at various times since about these Ross's and nobody seemed to know them. I wonder if they are the same ones. We moved to Wolseley St in Oatlands then Scarrel Dr in Castlemilk in 1956. My older brother was a John Matthew Ross and he would now be 65. My Granda was a Matthew Ross and he was a lorryman (carter) who had horses in the pend stable between Sandifaulds St and Moffat St.

My great grandfather's brother Thomas Grange, I have found lived in Warwick St. Gorbals in 1841 and he and his son Robert were shoemakers. I think his wife's name was Margaret McTier. I would love to know more about life in Glasgow at the time and of course any descendents would be wonderful.

The Ross family from Bridgeton - Would be very pleased if anyone who knows about any relatives of the late John Ross (my maternal grandfather) who lived in a variety of Bridgeton/Gorbals addresses. Details as follows: Born: 1875..father Daniel/Mother Margaret. Slater to trade 1st marriage to Hughina Bird (1893) @ 23 Walkinshaw Street. Children, Daniel born 1895, married 1913 to Ellen Connell. Catherine Bird 1897, married 1913 to David Moffat of 41 Walkinshaw Street, also son John born 1898. Hughina died 1912. 2nd marriage to Jessie Houston in 1912. Home in London Road, had 2 daughters Jean and Jessie. His wife and dtr Jean went to Canada in the mid 1920s. 3rd marriage 10/2/30 to Jane McNair, lived at 84 Abbotsford Place, not sure any about children. John Ross died 1/12/51 at 66 Sth. Portland Street, Gorbals and was buried in Riddrie Park Cemetry. I'd be interested in any info re John Ross's children and present whereabouts of any family.

Mary (Mum) born July 1944, attended St Luke's & Holyrood. Sister Catherine went from St Luke's to St Bonnys. Mum's mum, me granny, worked in Crown St & granda was a postie. Both me granny & her sister, my great aunt attended St Luke's, numerous Mary & Margaret Black's down the line. Mum's first job was at the Co-op. Other family, Aunt Cath, lived in Lawmoor St & godfather William Young was a joiner, with own business, who later moved to Rutherglen. Born in Gorbals in 1955 stayed till I was 11 then went to new Toryglen. Went to St Francis, St Brigids and then Holyrood. Great to remember all the stuff. Remember Tommy Murrays and the comic shop where you took your old comics back for a swop. Also who remembers the hot nuts under the bridge. My granny lived in Pollok and I walked her along for the bus and she bought me hot nuts. I must have been about 7 or 8 you couldnt let your weans do that now eh! We lived at 110 Camden Street across from the new school - it was just being built then and St Francis used it before the proddies LOL - dont take it too serious folks cos when you are at our age you realise life is too short. My da was Joe the milkman whose round was Castlemilk which was brand new at the time. Any of his old milk boys remember him.

Yes Thomas I remember St Lukes school. I attended from 1956 to 1959. The headmaster at that time was Mr McGoldrick. I remember the headmistress was Miss Bird and the Infants Headmistress was Miss McClelland. Miss Foley and Miss McCarran were also in the infants department. There was Mr Gordon who taught 'the big yins'. The janitor during my time was Mr McGuigan I think. Do you remember going for a spray bath at St Gabriel's?

Does anyone know the meaning of giving a "christening piece" when a child is being baptised, "don't know if non catholics do it". My niece who is an "expat" living in Winnipeg grandson was getting baptised and she wanted to do this and people were asking her what was the meaning behind this. All she could tell them it was done in the Gorbals where she was born, so can anyone help??

I was born in 1956 and spent the first six years of my life at 125 Florence St. My dad also stayed there as a child. He had two brothers, Tommy, James and a sister Theresa who all live in Canada now. My grandfather Tommy and his second wife Ida stayed next door to us. My dad, Gerry married my mum Helen Kelly from Polmadie in the early 60's. Our house was destroyed by fire and we moved to South Nitshill but I still have some nice memories of the Gorbals. Is there anyone out there who remembers any of my family. Congratulations on this site it is brilliant.

John Mitchell (1908-1928) was born in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, and emigrated to Canada as an apprentice clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company. The poor lad lost his life by drowning on September 2, 1928 at Pine Ridge/Gold Pines, near Red Lake, Ontario. His mother, Annie Mitchell, lived at 14 Cairntrodlie in Peterhead and arranged to have her boy's body shipped back to Peterhead. I wonder if any might be willing to locate and photograph his headstone? Should there be any family, I would be over the moon to hear from you. Does anyone remember my mother or grandparents? My mother's name is Isabella (Isa born 1928) Smith and her parents were May (nee McFarlane) and James. They lived at 228 and 138 Naburn St then moved to 269 Caledonia Rd. There were also 3 sons, James & Tommy who were twins and Ronnie who was the youngest. F.A.O Chef Eddie - Tam introduced me to Sammy Wilson in Naburn st were he lived as his brother (nothin like each other), Tam came from the oatlands across from the RITZ pictures. We worked together on the castlemilk scheme and carried coal from pollokshaws coal ree not for any relations. He went to Bonnies, we boxed with each other he sent u a telegram when he thru a punch and u had time to read it minutes before it arrived! We ran about together he told me Tarzan was his cousin from around rutherglen rd, the same guy in the book "SENSE OF FREEDOM". If the same Tam he would be 68yrs old now. I am trying to find any information about Duncan McLean Hutchison born in 1925 at 81 Rosebery (Roseberry) Street, Glasgow. His father was also Duncan McLean Hutchison and his mother Isabella (nee Gourlay). When his father and mother were married in 1922, they both lived at 118 Waddell Street, Glasgow. Witnesses to the marriage were David Hutchison (also of 118 Waddell Street) and Eva Stoddart of 46 Pollock Street. Duncan’s grandfather was also called Duncan McLean Hutchison, so the name may have been used throughout later male descendants. Also Isabella’s mother was also an Isabella, so that name may also have been used throughout later female generations. My dad was Robert Wilson (Bobby) he lived in Crown Street, he had 2 brothers one older, Gus and one younger, Joe, they lived in the same close as their grandparents, Agnes & Paddy. Their mum was "Big" Mary and she was a clippie on the trams and then the buses and nobody messed with her! My dad attended St Lukes Primary until he was 15 and then started his apprenticeship as a painter and decorator. The enquiry re: John Ross and family. My dad was a John Ross, who was born in Sandiefaulds St 1916. He went to Hayfield Primary. When I was younger (20) forty years ago, we went across to Bridgeton to meet his relatives. We met in a pub at the bottom of Abercromby St. Up to that day I did not know I had relatives in Bridgeton, as we were always warned about going there, as it was full of bad people. Turned out he jokingly meant my cousins! Have asked around at various times since about these Ross's and nobody seemed to know them. I wonder if they are the same ones. We moved to Wolseley St in Oatlands then Scarrel Dr in Castlemilk in 1956. My older brother was a John Matthew Ross and he would now be 65. My Granda was a Matthew Ross and he was a lorryman (carter) who had horses in the pend stable between Sandifaulds St and Moffat St.

My great grandfather's brother Thomas Grange, I have found lived in Warwick St. Gorbals in 1841 and he and his son Robert were shoemakers. I think his wife's name was Margaret McTier. I would love to know more about life in Glasgow at the time and of course any descendents would be wonderful.

The Ross family from Bridgeton - Would be very pleased if anyone who knows about any relatives of the late John Ross (my maternal grandfather) who lived in a variety of Bridgeton/Gorbals addresses. Details as follows: Born: 1875..father Daniel/Mother Margaret. Slater to trade 1st marriage to Hughina Bird (1893) @ 23 Walkinshaw Street. Children, Daniel born 1895, married 1913 to Ellen Connell. Catherine Bird 1897, married 1913 to David Moffat of 41 Walkinshaw Street, also son John born 1898. Hughina died 1912. 2nd marriage to Jessie Houston in 1912. Home in London Road, had 2 daughters Jean and Jessie. His wife and dtr Jean went to Canada in the mid 1920s. 3rd marriage 10/2/30 to Jane McNair, lived at 84 Abbotsford Place, not sure any about children. John Ross died 1/12/51 at 66 Sth. Portland Street, Gorbals and was buried in Riddrie Park Cemetry. I'd be interested in any info re John Ross's children and present whereabouts of any family.

Mary (Mum) born July 1944, attended St Luke's & Holyrood. Sister Catherine went from St Luke's to St Bonnys. Mum's mum, me granny, worked in Crown St & granda was a postie. Both me granny & her sister, my great aunt attended St Luke's, numerous Mary & Margaret Black's down the line. Mum's first job was at the Co-op. Other family, Aunt Cath, lived in Lawmoor St & godfather William Young was a joiner, with own business, who later moved to Rutherglen. Born in Gorbals in 1955 stayed till I was 11 then went to new Toryglen. Went to St Francis, St Brigids and then Holyrood. Great to remember all the stuff. Remember Tommy Murrays and the comic shop where you took your old comics back for a swop. Also who remembers the hot nuts under the bridge. My granny lived in Pollok and I walked her along for the bus and she bought me hot nuts. I must have been about 7 or 8 you couldnt let your weans do that now eh! We lived at 110 Camden Street across from the new school - it was just being built then and St Francis used it before the proddies LOL - dont take it too serious folks cos when you are at our age you realise life is too short. My da was Joe the milkman whose round was Castlemilk which was brand new at the time. Any of his old milk boys remember him.

Yes Thomas I remember St Lukes school. I attended from 1956 to 1959. The headmaster at that time was Mr McGoldrick. I remember the headmistress was Miss Bird and the Infants Headmistress was Miss McClelland. Miss Foley and Miss McCarran were also in the infants department. There was Mr Gordon who taught 'the big yins'. The janitor during my time was Mr McGuigan I think. Do you remember going for a spray bath at St Gabriel's?
