I lived my life in the Gorbals as my mammy and daddy they came from Ireland we lived all our life there and they reard their family it was the best place to be i loved it. Everyone was the same i grew up in the sixties, i went to st johns I remember the deprevation at that time i remember going down warrick st to go to school and times do not change we were told don't go down there. Some people at that time were like not nice people, but most of the people in the gorbals were the salt of the earth they looked after each other. I remember i came from an irish famly and my mums neighbour every year on the 12th july you set to shout you fenions you papes. I said mum why are they angry at us what is wrong with us why do people hate us so much my mother would get very angry and say they took us away from our country we got spat on because we were irish. I do not forget we tried to fit in and it was terrible as we grew up most of the families of irish people went no more when the troubles in the north of ireland and bernadette devlin and these people tried to get the same rights for everyone no matter what there religion or there belives was, but she was classed as a bad person when she tried her best to do the right thing. we have a history in the gorbals i will always love to be brought up there it was the most amazing plase i love to thingk back the people were the best and yes i remember the cumbie cumbie ya bass. I was never afraid to walk down gorbals st, they never touched there own never never afraid. I love where i came from but i will always be irish from the co. MAYO.

Lived at 257 Lamoor Street early thirties, across from the "polis ofis". Does anyone remember the name of the wee dairy next to it? They sold the best dolly scones and she had a lucky dip. You poked a wee pick into a board full of holes and if a wee bit paper came out the other end you got a free macaroon. I remember Annie's the tallies, George's the fruit shop, Howies the bakers (great iced teabread) Benson's the tobacconist next to the Paragon, Tobies fish and chip shop with the bottle of brown sauce on the counter and the bottles of gnger ginger sitting above the chip pan. Cissy McCafferties (two sisters) Mathieson Street, who would sell you a cup of jam and Tommy Mallarkeys next to St. Francis school, great oyster wafer shells filled with marshmallow dipped in chocolate and filled with icecream. Everyone talks about the good old days. I grew up in the gorbals in the 80's and left about 10 years ago and I can honestly say that it was the best move I made. I remember from my childhood heroin addicts and drinking buckfast by time they where aged 15. Although most of my family still live there, the only fond memories i had was going to grans for sunday dinner. Most of my then friends are drug addicts and the rest well they got up the duff and now live on the dss. So yeah it looks great now but as they say u can change the face of the buildings but u can't change who lives in them.

Sonny we folks from the real gorbals are true survivor's we did enjoy our young lives BUT when we became teenager's things changed for the worse so as 9yr-12yr olds our adventures took us to rake the middens in its way educated us as u say there were better places in Glasgow but that never made better folks. Throwing away good parts of cycles that we took home rebuilt ourselves something we never could afford a RALIEGH BYCYCLE the frame was! decent folk were in abundance in the gorbals they wouldn't throw that frame away, it was a gift to some poorer kid or sold to make a bob. Leaving school getting a job wasn't easy at 15 i carried coal didn't last long nearly killed me! Becoming a teenage thug was the norm in our area but lots of guys remembered happy times being with their sibling's maw n DA nobody can say they were unhappy then even if the old man was a drunkin bum[no my DA was teetotaler] we always remember the good times and exagerate the bad or vice a versa. Even if they were few i don't think anyone should try n take that happy passage of time away from us i couldn't wait to get away either! The grass always looks greener on the other side o the hill but sometimes it is a swamp. We rented our gorbals house paint n papered now rented houses have to have the floor brushed by the owner (joke-is it!) or get taken to some tribunal so the kids of whatever district are so lazy they really don't know what they are missing so everything u say i agree with but we all were kids at somestage if not still! It would do a lot o folk good to live in a place like the gorbals with all its wonderful people (60's n before) or am i only dreaming ok sonny! awera best

To Sonny about being raised in the Gorbals. I agree it wasn't that great the way we had to live but what friendships we had. It also made us stronger people and thankful for the knowledge the streets of the Gorbals gave us. I left 41 years ago and I love to visit and see all the changes that have been made. I have travelled all over the world and I can honestly say that the people from the Gorbals are very warm and friendly.

I have been reading an awful lot of rubbish about the the old Gorbals lately I have to put my story forward. I lived in Bedford St in the 40s-50s- and the start of the 60s. Our house was spotless, My Mum and Dad had a lovely flat in a tenement. My Dad was always decorating when he finished a hard days work for Mc donalds Slaters and Plasters in the Gorbals. My Mum would wash the stairs, then put whitening all down the edges. We used to put rages on our feet to polish around the edges of the floors where the carpets ended.We were well dressedin summer and winter. Yes we used to play in the middens, climb the dikes, play at shops with stones for sweets, mud was mince ect. I remember having a lot of fun in the back courts. I dont ever remember dirty nappies being tossed from windows. Yes I seen Rats sometimes, but remember we were only five minutes away from the Clyde. I have always been proud of living in the Gorbals. Even now age 58 I still read everything I can get about the Gorbals. So please dont always look on the Bad Times, I will always remember with pride the old Gorbals, and the good times. Thank you for reading my side of the story.

Gorbals Anecdotes what a great site love reading all the stories from the gorbals as thats where John my other half was born and raised. He came from 122 Hospital St. I know some of his neighbours names were the Cunninghams and the Mc Brides. He has alot of good memories of his childhood growing up in the gorbals, I myself was born and raised not to far away in Sunny Govan. Keep up the good work Fantastic site. Reading through your site i have to wonder where some of these peoples brains come from. Sure they where alot of good people in the gorbals, but anyone with have a brain said it was a great place to live is dreaming or in another world. If living with rats all over the place and some of what was thrown out the window makes for a great place you must have been walking in another world. Don't tell me we did not know any better. If you do you never went to another part of glasgow to see how decent people lived. The old gorbals in gone thank god for that. So whereever you are it has to be better than that..

Hi GorbalsGirl - thru the nite the frost did bite n single ends with no toilets SOMEONE when finnished reading the crap in the daily record used it to do just that then try n throw it into the midgies only to land in the back yard thats what i meant as nappies. Kids were well looked after in lawmoor st anyway women left the weans in their prams for us torags to take them for a spin to the ducksy wi permision of course. My pal said u take that pram i'll take this wean (permission granted) off we raced along caley rd. TOFFY bit n bring them back clatty n hungry if it was still clean n not greetin we left it in hutchy square (joking)!! TOFFY BIT visit my relations in sandyfuald st. they tried ti be TOFFS laid all the ashes from the back close to the midden said it was crazy paving. Thistle st i built my own toilet asked the upstairs folk don't use the loo for an hour PLEEZE! they all flushed at the same time i had to get a big shovel to clean the mess up were did i put it at the bottom of the FN STAIRS they had to walk down 321 thistle st. ah the gorbals it was great but i couldnt live there noo. When i arrived in oz built a house i asked the builder were is the loo "we put a wee shed n a can outside the council empty it every week" NOO FN WAY i was not goin back ti thistle st so i built my own septic system so Gorbalsgirl i do thank the old place for making me ready for this world n i really do laugh when people grumble about the weather just have a smile n the sun is always shinning awera best gorbalsgirl.

Re: Masson family, I remember your dads family I lived in McNeil Street round the corner from Hayfield. I was a pal of "Dunkie" Masson he ran about McNeil Street corner with myself, James Philbin, James Vage, Charlie Mc Kinnon and John Kelly who also lived in Hayfield St. "Dunkie" married Ellen Butler who also lived up my close. He was a paratrooper during the war and was wounded at Arnhem He worked in Co-op as a driver.

Hi Gorbals Jim. Please explain who wore nappies if not babies??? You being a young boy probably did not know about nappies. I know my brother did not take an interest in them and would not have known a nappie from a the man in the moon. When I said PILLOWS I was talking about old pillowcases that were torn up and dried faster than the normal nappies. We, too, had old army coats on our beds (three beds in the room with five of us on the beds. Four girls and one boy and we, too, played in backs with green slimy water. Who knows maybe we lived up the same close.... You mentioned a toffy place in the Gorbals, tell me where there was toffy street and I will tell you if that is where I lived. Cheers.....

I see that some of you talk of nappies, drug taking etc, i can understand what you are saying, I am not from Gorbals but worked as a concierge till a few weeks back in the high rise flats, its the truth you talk of. U must have been in a toffy part of the old place if babies used PILLOW cases or such nappies we even had green slimy water to play in n great army coats as blankets ache I must hiv came from the slumy bit!! Does anyone know where I could find current pictures of the Gorbals? The latest I can find are from the mid sixties. Are there still tenement buildings there, or is everything now commercial? Also, does anyone remember Oliver Clares radio repair shop. I may be mistaken, but I think it was on Eglinton St?

I am trying to find Teresa o Neill (not known if she married) or any of her family. She was born in 1920 in Glasgow to a Teresa o Neill (nee Farrelly), originally from Oldcastle, Co. Meath, Ireland and a Michael O Neill, Sauchiehall Street Glasgow. His parents were Daniel O'Neill and Margaret Condron. The family also lived at Dobbies Loan, and Caledonian Street. Teresa's mother died in 1926 and I know that her father Michael married again and had at least one other child. My reason for finding this family is that Teresa's mother had been married before in Canada to a Thomas McDonagh. He was killed in World War one in 1915. Teresa had three children from this marriage, Margaret, Thomas and Patrick who later lived with the O'Neills in Glasgow until their mother also died in 1926. They were then returned to grandparents in Ireland and lost touch with their step sister. I would love to get in touch with any one who knows of them.

Hi, wonderful site to read looking for relatives of my nan's. Her name was Ann Ross and her brother was called Robert Wilson he married a Sarah Todd and they had three or more children. They originally lived in Muse Lane but in the early forties lived in Ronald Street, the childrens names were Harold, Robert and Annie and possibly a Johnnie would love to know if they or any of their descendants are still alive in Glasgow. Just had the most amazing holiday in Glasgow and Perth - wonderful friendly people! Thanks guys/lasses

Hey, GorbalsJim1, I do not know where in the Gorbals you lived but I lived there, too, for ninteen years, leaving there in 1957. Never, never once in my years there did I ever know a Mammy who put newspaper nappies on their weans or ever see one lying in a back or front of the tenements. Nappies were made of white terry toweling squares. The mother's would never, ever have used newspapers for nappies, maybe old towels, old sheets or pillowcases but to my knowledge never newspapers. Anybody out there ever see newspaper nappies? I am curious.

I was born in 1956 in Florence St. opposite the Tavern. My memories of the Gorbals are attending St. Luke's, eating pies from Willie Marks, changing comics at Dirty Maggies, Saturday morning queues at the Shan shop, matinees at the George, the Rainbow cafe and greasy Peter's. Later memories then took me to Holyrood, St Francis' boys guild, Balbriggan, The Citizen's theatre and the Lantern Inn, Cumberland St. I left Glasgow in 1977 although I still visit as often as I can. My parents, Matt and Ella Kirwan passed away a few years ago and I would like to hear from anyone who knew them. Any pictures of Waddell St/Old Rutherglen Rd would be appreciated. To John Coyne, I haven't seen you since my dad's funeral, but I remember being in your house the day Brian signed for Celtic (and got his first autograph). I met Tricia about 7 years ago at a christening at the Mearns. Regards to all the family

F.A.O Brian Reily, re. Warwick street, the story goes, that Peggy Kilna, who lived across the street at No33 got up a petition to have it changed, because it had a bad name in the gorbals, said to be full of crooks etc (in fact it was no worse than any other street there). Anyway, she took the petition to the corporation and got it changed. How do I know this. I was a 12 year old boy at the time (1947) and remember telling my teacher (Mr Alexander) at ST.Johns school in clelland street to change my address. btw, we, the Dougan family lived above the mitchels at 40 Warwick street.

At what church would a Roman Catholic attend in the 1840's in Gorbals? 2. In what cemetery would a Roman Catholic be buried in during the 1840's?
