Does anyone remember being in the May procession? Settle an argument did it walk every SUNDAY in MAY or just the SUNDAY after your COMMUNION I say we walked round the GORBALS the whole month of MAY on the SUNDAY in our COMMUNION OUTFIT does anyone remember

I am trying to get the words to a comical poem a friend of the family used to recite at parties etc. I think it was called 'when my dividend comes oot'. I am also trying to track down members of my extended family. My great grand parents were Thomas Snedden and Elizabeth King who came from Carriden near Boness. My maternal grandmother was their daughter Elizabeth who was born in Kirkliston. Would love to hear from anyone who could be related.

I am trying to trace my mothers family. I know that Mother, Margaret Noble Gormley, was born in Port Glasgow on March 20, 1905. She had a sister Annie whose husband was Charlie Mulholland, a brother John who left home at a tender age to join the Navy, and later emigrated to New York, USA. There was also a brother Hugh, who was later in the Royal Air Force. My mother's mothers name was Maryann Doherty, and her father was John (Jock) Gormley. Mother was baptized in St. John's church in Port Glasgow. Any information will be much appreciated. Sincerely, Ann Woods

The Gorbals is just a ghost living in the minds of us aging folk fading into oblivion. The hot peanuts and tablet under the railway bridge on the way tae the palace fur a Saturday rer tear, 5 Pence tae get in. Or a rammy in ra Greens. Once I paid one & three tae get intae the balcony tae see an X cried ra Blob. Widnae scare a wean nooadays. Eddie Traynors wis aye guid fur a black eye on a Friday night. A remember getting my teeth pilt oot we a nasty wummen dentist at Florence St Clinic an getting ra bandy legs straitened wi ra sunlamps. Ma favourite memory is a door step wi lemon curd. Noo adays they book tae go tae Spain we hid tae book tae go tae ra steamie and load up maws pram oan a Saturday wi ra durty claes. If ye wurny nice tae ra man he widnay help ye wae yer wringer. As an old Gorbals lad I am desperately seeking some photographs of the main street from Oxford Street to Carlton Place I used to live at number 16 my wee pal was Jackie McPartland and also David Winestone and Tommy Barrie. I left Glasgow in 55 at 17, joined the RAF and have been away ever since (apart from a dozen or so visits.... fond and painful memories? but it all made me a much rounder person(not weight wise!!)..... regards to all George

I learned of this site three days ago and I'm now addicted to it. I found connections to several people and have communicated with them. I left Glasgow in 1959 to live in London, before coming to the USA in 1961. I didn't return to Glasgow for 20 years and the change was mind boggling. My brother Jack and I went for a stroll down some of the old streets which were still there but it had changed so much I didn't recognize where I was at times. When we turned onto Oxford street I saw that most of the buildings from the past were gone but, lo and behold, the Oxford Street library was still standing. It was closed but we climbed the stairs and peered through the windows with tears streaming down our 50+years cheeks. We used to frequent that library almost every day where we found an escape from a miserable homelife by losing ourselves in books. I wonder if anyone else rememnbers that library and me. I was born in 1939 on Buchan Street...across from the Gorbals school and have two brothers Matthew and Jack. My maiden nname is Rollins and both my father and uncle had dance studios where they taught ballroom dancing. Feel free to use my e-mail address if you recognize my name. Thanks.

Re. Bedford Cafe, though I dont have a photo of it,it has many memories for me. As a schoolboy during WW11 it was where I bought my ice cream cones and wafers from. As a 17 year old I sold the evening papers, times & citizen on the corner, I remember there was a mum and dad, son and daughter. The son was tragicly killed in a motercycle accident around 1952/53.

As an old Gorbals lad I am desperately seeking some photographs of the main street from Oxford Street to Carlton Place I used to live at number 16 my wee pal was Jackie McPartland and also David Winestone and Tommy Barrie. I left Glasgow in 55 at 17, joined the RAF and have been away ever since (apart from a dozen or so visits.... fond and painful memories? but it all made me a much rounder person(not weight wise!!)..... regards to all George

Hi John Todd (Toddy), Regards Eaglesham......... John Eaglesham and Helen Todd were my grandparents. They had 6 children ( My Aunties and Uncles) John, Sammy, Elizabeth, Helen, Agnes, James.. My mother was Helen Eaglesham who married my father David Ross Morland. I have sent a couple of e.mails to you and can give you more info if you reply. I know very little of my grandmothers family.. Look forward to hearing from you Regards David Ps. They lived in a room in kitchen 327 Caledonia Road 3 up.. I believe when just married they had a place around the corner either Gilmour Street or further up Mc Neil Street..

Just discovered the web site. Bringing back memories. The 'Gorbals' was a paradise. Readers may be interested in reading a book by Mary Liverani "The Winter Sparrows" Publisher: London: M Joseph: 1976 - the autobiography of her childhood in the Gorbals. One of the best books ever written.

I learned of this site three days ago and I'm now addicted to it. I found connections to several people and have communicated with them. I left Glasgow in 1959 to live in London, before coming to the USA in 1961. I didn't return to Glasgow for 20 years and the change was mind boggling. My brother Jack and I went for a stroll down some of the old streets which were still there but it had changed so much I didn't recognize where I was at times. When we turned onto Oxford street I saw that most of the buildings from the past were gone but, lo and behold, the Oxford Street library was still standing. It was closed but we climbed the stairs and peered through the windows with tears streaming down our 50+years cheeks. We used to frequent that library almost every day where we found an escape from a miserable homelife by losing ourselves in books. I wonder if anyone else rememnbers that library and me. I was born in 1939 on Buchan Street...across from the Gorbals school and have two brothers Matthew and Jack. My maiden nname is Rollins and both my father and uncle had dance studios where they taught ballroom dancing. Feel free to use my e-mail address if you recognize my name. Thanks.

Harry Rollins was my uncle and Robert Rollins, who also had a dance studio, was my father. I knew the Mitchell family very well when I lived on Buchan Street, across from Gorbals School. Joyce was my pal for many years.

Re. Bedford Cafe, though I dont have a photo of it,it has many memories for me. As a schoolboy during WW11 it was where I bought my ice cream cones and wafers from. As a 17 year old I sold the evening papers, times & citizen on the corner, I remember there was a mum and dad, son and daughter. The son was tragicly killed in a motercycle accident around 1952/53.

I am looking for photos of my great grandfather's ice cream cafe called "the bedford cafe" located at the corner of bedford and south portland st. Iunderstand the bedford was in operation in the late 1800's and my great grandparents, felix and maria derisio rented it in 1935 and owned it in the late 1950's. cheers.

Enquiry submitted by Lauren USA 23/10/06. Just a loose possibility that Mochan's that lived next door to me when I was young could be related to her mums cousins. They lived next door to 761 Boydstone Road, Carnwadric, Glasgow. The parents were Harry and Sissy and the children were Harry, Molly, Steven, and Angela. I left in the late 70's and they still lived there then, all the children would be in their 50's now.

Born 1925 in 38 colvend st bridgeton, went to strathclyde public school then riverside high, then voluteered for the royal navy. Met my wife in sydney, married now for 58 years. I was born and grew up on Lawmoor Street and left in 1962. I'm trying to trace my family tree on my fathers side, he was born on Caledonia Road. I unfortunately never knew his side of the family growing up. I know he had twin cousins with the name McMennemy, i'm trying to find the names of the parents of the twins. Just answering a message from Dennis Mochan, My granny was Mabel Mochan married to Jimmy Elliot. I remember visiting Dicks wallpaper shop and getting a discount because we were family.
