My name is Rena Pittenger: maiden name Slowey, my father was Patrick Slowey and my grannie Slowey (nee:McDonald) lived on Rutherglen Road until 1961. Her wee hoose was across the street from a park that at one time was a cemetary. I have just found this site and after reading all the great stories it brought back many fond memories. Some of my cousins were the O'Neills, Kenny's Moore's and of course the Slowey's (John Slowey's) family. If anyone has any photo's of my dads funeral which was held in the Gorbals (I believe at St. Francis's Church) about 20 - 25 years ago I would be interested in buying or getting a copy of them. Thanks again for a trip done memory lane.

Hello, I'm looking for a 2001 contributor by the name of Moira Thomas (maiden name Carcary) now living in Porirua NZ. I lived in the same close (123 Hospital Street), and believe I have a photo of the two of us when we were young children. Have sent an email, but wondering if you are still contactable there. Further to recent enquries about my forthcoming book on bieng brougfht up in the gorbals here is some info for you all! colin Author: MacFarlane, Colin Title: The Real Gorbals Story Pub Date: September 2007 Rights: World All Languages Colin MacFarlane was born in the Gorbals in the 1950s, 20 years after the publication of No Mean City, the classic novel about pre-war life in what was once Glasgow’s most deprived district. He lived in the same street as its fictional ‘razor king’, Johnnie Stark, and subsequently realised that a lot of all the old characters represented in the book were still around as late as the 1960s. Men still wore bunnets and played pitch and toss; women still wore headscarves and treated ‘the steamie’ as their social club. The razor gangs were still running amok, human waste ran down the tenement stairs, and filth, violence, crime, rats, poverty, crumbling slums and drunkenness abounded just like they did in No Mean City. MacFarlane witnessed the last days of the old Gorbals just as a major regeneration programme began in 1961 and, as a street boy, he had a unique insight into a once great community in rapid decline. He witnessed numerous ‘square goes’, drunken fights, gang battles, police corruption and even the occasional stabbing, slashing and murder. I was born at 143 Florence Street Gorbals 1941 and stayed with my Granny Margaret Thom. I went to Camden Street School and then on to Adelphi Secondery. The family that stayed up our close was the Doogans, Quinn, Malcolm. My friends were Christine GRant, Ann Doogan. My own name was (Muir) Mum was Ina and Dad was Abbey. It was great times.

Hi Davie Graham i said I would research the word Pend for you. It is an old Scottish Word for Archway. An open ended passage way through a building an usually meant for vehicles as opposed to close which was for pedestrians. So there Pend is the right word........... Cheers Rita

My maiden name was McKay and i lived in Wallace Street. I went to St John's infants school in Nicholson St for my first year of school and was taught by Miss Carson; she was a lovely old teacher. We then moved to St John's primary just next to Wallce Street (on the corner of West Street). My friends were Bridget Gallagher, Anne Marie Campbell, Sheila Gallagher, Cathy McFadden, Cathy Hamilton, Cathy McNulty, Bridie McNulty and many more. Agnes from Gloucester Street was also one of my friends, but I can't recall her surname. I had an accident aged 10 when a coal lorry crashed and I was buried under the coal. I was upset when my mum bought the paper to see that my picture wasn't in it, but a lovely one of Agnes was! My dad worked in the fruit market at the candleriggs and used to hand fruit through the gates of St John's for me an my friends. Teachers I remember were Headmistress Miss Harvey and Deputy Miss Malayne, Miss Smith and Mr McGhee. Bridget Gallagher and I presented Miss Harvey with a clock and a bouquet of flowers on her retirement. Bridget also did a speech I think, as she had the loveliest voice! I moved to Priesthill before completing the final year at St John's and remember being devastated at having to leave everyone at school and my friends in Wallace Street. I would love to hear from anyone who knew me then.

Just found this site and its been great to see familiar names from Queen Elizabeth square and the rest. We were brought up on Waddell St then moved over to the flats. My dad was always known as Big Donny he done his national service with the H.L.I. at Maryhill barracks then shipped to Korea along with many other Gorbals boys. He played darts in the Ritz bar on Old Rutherglen Rd, my dad is in poor health at the moment...anyone remember him please drop a line? As re myself anyone out there that went to Hayfield (65-71)then Adelphi (71-75)it would be nice to hear from you. One funny memory from Adelphi is a one-eyed geography teacher, a Mr Whitelaw who decided to give Rab Sinclair three of the belt but every time he swung it Rab moved his hands but then claimed he didn't but that the teacher had missed!

I grew up in the Oatlands Wolsely St no 57 opposite the "spare grun". Moved to Castlemilk age 8 in 1965. Happy memories, the hoat wa at the steamie going for a bath on a Sunday at the steamie, getting so excited at the arrival of the shows at the green. Going on the 101 bus to the george pictures I remember the first time I went there my da dropped me off to watch Summer Holiday. My mums family the Keenans (Nellie and Barnie) emigrated to Oz in 1959 her sisters followed, she was left behind with my da Louie her name was Sadie nice looking couple until the drink got a grip....

I have been on the site at various times asking if anyone had a photo of Sandyfaulds Pend.......to no avail until Maggie Mac in New Jersey dug up a couple for me. I lived with my Granny at the beginning of the War, in the big hoose in the Pend opposite the Coal Rea, before she moved to the wee sweety shop in Moffat Street and then to Sandyfaulds Street. Margaret lived up the same close. Anyway, to get to the point I will e-mail the photos of the Pend to anyone whose interest has been aroused by my enquiries. Bono is famous throughout the entertainment industry for being more than just a little self-righteous. He is playing a U2 concert in Glasgow, when he asks the audience for total quiet. Then in the silence, he starts to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he says into the microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies." A voice with a broad Glaswegian accent, from near the front of the crowd, pierces the silence............. "Well, f****ng stop doin it then!" Had this sent as an email. Bet he was from the Gorbals!

If it was I used to buy sweeties with my coupons in her wee shop in Moffat St. which was next to my granny's close between the shop and Dick Barton's pub. In the 30's and 40's? I lived with my granny for a while too up that close then we moved round the corner to 380 Rutherglen Rd between Cockburn's the chemist and Cochrane's the grocers.

FAO: Peter Blair, Kilmarnock I do remember your family also the Nelsons, McGinleys, Gabriels, Lamonts, and Quins who lived on the top floor. There were others, but I can't recall their names While I was viewing the Mitchell Library site I came across a picture of 41 Rutherglen Road, it was from 1935, but little had changed.

Me again this is about my hubby tommy taylor tam to his mates as we called it. Tommy came from florence street his pals were tommy mgee, frank ward, games and big dunky glasgow and the burkes. Tommy started off delivering milk then the auld coal brikkets in a barra hired for the day from hislops. I knew a Winnie Curran, a gang of us hung about together in the 50's, used to go into a cafe in Rutherglen Road. There was also Louis and Aldo Ulivi and Ronnie Scott. There as also a lass called Margaret Mailey, I wonder if it is the same Winnie Curran?

This is in reply to Anne O'Neill. I remember your family as I visited them in Castlemilk not long after you moved there. My brother, Hugh, was best friends with your brother, James, before he went to Canada. I had contact with a niece of yours a while ago and she told me that James was now in North or South Carolina. I would love to have his address if you could e:mail it to me so that the next time my brother comes over we maybe could call him or meet him somewhere. Hope you and your family are all well.

My mum and dad came from gorbals cross we lived three up and could see the big clock from our window at the cross. We came from a big family 8 off us 4 boys 3 girls we had great times and great memories. There was the greens picture hall it was said you went with a coat on and left with a waistcoat, then there was the palace pictures in gorbals st but was turned into a bingo hall in the 1960s. In my time we didn't have much but we had loads off fun playing sweety shops and peever skiping ropes hide and seek and the best we thought at the time kick door run fast. We didn't have much but all us kids had a ball and now this kid is just about to turn 67yrs and still love every thing the gorbals taught me. We had our ups and downs but we always had a good sense of humour and still have it so to all you great gorbals people out there all the best. By the way, my maiden name was birrell and the st francis procession was always on the first sunday in may.
