The Clelland bar
The Clelland bar
Did anyone use the Clelland music lounge in 1967/8 ish, the resident singing group was the Diplomats on a Friday night, ah the music was great then, sitting down with your wife/girlfriend and getting waitress service at your table, magic
Re: The Clelland bar

Nice speaking to you again, yes it was a great pub for music, someone said to me it was the first pub in the south side ever to have live music ?. Don't know if any of our posters can verify that ?

I heard of his youth club Ann, as I got older I also went to the Barrrowland dance hall [Friday nights] went to the Sarry Heid for a few pints of cider and a glass of white tornado to get a twinkle in the toes but most of the lassies I danced with ended up with corns as I trod on their toes !!!!!. Aye happy memories of Bill Hayley and his Comets, ah where have the years gone Ann ? but what great memories. You take care now Ann and speak to you soon, God Bless. x

No your right I definitely think it was the first pub in the soo-side to have live music, that's what it was all about Norrie in those days, a few beers and listening to a good band. After closing time along to the nearest fish n chip shop, then up Saturday morning with a hangover and having a guzzle of Irn Bru to slake the thirst, aye happy days Norrie.

Re: The Clelland bar
Hello Danny, yes, I remember only too well the Clelland Bar and, as others have pointed out, it was one of the first pubs in the Gorbals to feature live entertainment. Before that I vaguely recollect we had to go to a pub in Rutherglen for live acts. I think it was called the Viking or Vulcan. I was a regular patron at the nearby Horse Shoe Bar in Crown Street, at the junction with Clelland Street. Although a small pub it was more famous for heavy gambling on the dominoes, partner whist and solo they played there. Halcyon days indeed.
Re: The Clelland bar
Hya Don, thanks for your reply to the "Clelland bar", I also remember the Viking bar in Rutherglen as a music venue in the late 1960's [for me]. Only thing was a bus trip back to the soo-side but again it never took you too long, I think Don If I remember correctly it was a "red bus" that went into Rutherglen from the Rutherglen Rd as the old 101 trollybus terminated at Shawfield beside Clyde football club stadium [then]. I always remember leaving Glasgow in 1968, going to live/work in London and the pubs were opened to 11 pm as oposed to 10 m in Glasgow and I thought that was magic. But you know what Don in all my travels half way round the world I wish with the benefit of hindsight I had stayed in my home town. Nice speaking to you mate take care and God Bless.Don wrote:Hello Danny, yes, I remember only too well the Clelland Bar and, as others have pointed out, it was one of the first pubs in the Gorbals to feature live entertainment. Re: The Clelland bar
Hi Dannygill, The Viking was renamed a few years ago, its now called Dr Gormans, it gets a good name in Rutherglen, mind you I can count on my two hands the times I have been in pubs in Rutherglen, I prefer in the house, a much better class of malt whisky and real ale
