Hi Gang,
Where was the best fish and chip shop in the soo-side ?, My favourite was Greasy Peters in Rutherglen Rd just beside Moffat st but we will all have our own favourite "chippy" where was yours ?

My favourite was Mario's (when it first opened) on Polmadie Road. It was really great for a few years but then went downhill. They had another shop at the same time in Wolseley st at Polmadie Road across from the Molls Mire. Mario ran that one and his wife Nettie ran the one up on Polmadie Road. Their son and daughter had a chippy near the roundabout at Croftfoot when I was back there a few years ago. They both are the spitting image of their Ma & Da.
There was a Greasy Peter's on Braehead St next to the Pawn shop where you could buy a penny's worth of scrapings. I loved them but when I think of it now, it's a wonder I didn't get food poisoning!
So I guess there was more than one Greasy Peter's if the one you recall was in Moffat St? Cheers, Sheila

Not really in the Soo-side but I loved The Unique on Allison Street in Govanhill...Used to spend my dinner ticket money there when I went to Holyrood...I think the dinner ticket was 2/6 and that bought you a fish supper and then money left over for some plates of chips on the other days...The days we did not go to The Unique, we skipped into the dinner hall...

I remember the "chippy" in Braehead st the name of the Father was Aldo or Aldous [same as his son] it was just beside the Braehead bar [Hurrels] and as a wean you could get a glass of vimto and a "salza" bar for a few pennys. I was in there one Friday night getting fish+chips when a a lassie won ten shillings on the fruit machine [one arm bandit] and that was a lot of money in the 50's , well she bought everybody a glass of Ginger to celebrate. I also remember the "chippy" opposite the Molls Mire pub Shelia ah great days. When I mentioned Greasy Peters I didn't mean in Moffat st but actually round the corner in Rutherglen rd and in the summer nights coming back from Gorbals swimming pool we would wait till they were almost closed and buy a Penny's worth of scrapings but because they were closing you got more than a penny's worth, my big sister Jeanette was with me so my Ma wouldn't tell me aff for coming hame late.

WOW we had the same chip shop in common Margaret yes the Unique in Allison st, some days my school pals and me would walk from Holyrood school to the Unique and get a bag of chips, they were really good. I visited Glasgow last year and went to Holyrood school and was given a conducted tour of the school by the Deputy Headmistress and was taken into a few of the classes to meet the pupils, well I felt like a King that day. I had walked along Allison st earlier that morning looking for the Unique chip shop but it wasn't there anymore. Also you could buy a weekly dinner ticket for the dinner hall at Holyrood school but Like you the money that my Ma gave me went on chips with occasionaley skipping in to the dinner hall [sshhh]

I meant to say I'm going up to Glasgow for a ten day holiday this September and I'm dying to eat a fish supper with a couple of those big pickled onions kept in the glass jar, also we don't get the Laurence [SQUARE] sausages here in London so I'm going to have a breakfast with one of them on the plate too. I know a lot of people after having a drink go for a Chinese or an Indian and yes they are nice but to me a Glasgow fish supper is the bizo.

Marios at Croftfoot roundabout has been under new management for the past 2/3 years but Nettie still owns the building as far as I was told, they also had a chippie in Castlemilk road and finally opened a restaurant in the town somewhere. Tony the oldest boy met in with an accident while driving he died, there were loads of the family working in the chippie and all fought like hell or maybe it was the way they spoke
I still go there on a Saturday night for a single fish but all they chippies are into different dishes.
About the Unique it was my anniversary and I'm not a lover of meat so my brother-in-law told my hubby to take me to the Unique best fish in town says he. So off we went, jumped into a taxi in Castlemilk told the taxi driver "take us to the Unique" the driver could have driven blindfolded as it was a favourite haunt for the taxi drivers.
When we went in not being in the shop before we went into the wrong room the tables were wee tiny ones you could hardly put a plate on it ordered a special fish they were all sold out so got an ordinary fish, then a nutter with a drink in him wanted to speak to us my man isn't the greatest for having a conversation so we asked him to take a walk as it was our anniversary "We wanted to be Alone" anyway the nutter wouldn't take no for an answer and my anniversary nearly finished up in a fight we finished up going home no speaking to one another We never went back to the unique and my man was going choke my brother-in-law for suggesting the Unique Amelia

The Unique in Allison st. was owned by the parents Ronnie Sicci, a class mate of mine. But you would have to go a long way to beat the Cavvy in Cavendish st. . Or the Broadway in Cumberland st. Surreyboy.
