Walnut Whips

Post by redscot »

Hello there all...

I am hoping you can answer this wee question for me....how many walnuts were or are in a Walnut Whip...I was sure there were 2...one on the top and one inside at the bottom of the mallow.

I was shopping yesterday when I came across Walnut Whips which is very rare in Australia, you need to buy them at a British sweet shop and they are about $6 each :( so I was over the moon finding these, although I don't think it's the same maker, so if anyone could also tell me who made them in Scotland that would be great...anyway so after buying 5 boxes I headed home to try one :D Not much difference except there was just the one walnut on the top....but taste great so that's the main thing...btw the maker of these ones is Cocoa Deli the rest of the writing is too small to read....any help would great....have a great day everyone.

Hi Rose,
Yes I remember the walnut whip with the walnut at the top but was there another one at the bottom of the mallow?. I think the base was really thick with a "slab"of chocolate Rose and the "cream" or "mallow" was great to eat, some times I can remember every thing exactly and other times like the walnut whip I'm a bit sketchy with the memory. Yes I love eating those whips Rose but I couldn't do it now as my false teeth would skite all over the place ha ha.
Regards.
Danny :)

Hi Redscot,

Yeah I still love Walnut Whips even now. These days you only get one Walnut on the top outside. In the old days they had two, and as you say, one on top and one at the inside bottom. We used to take the top one off and leave it to one side until we had eaten the whip, by starting at the top licking out the fondant, then demolishing the chocolate all the way to the bottom. You were then left with the base and the inner walnut which used to end up in your gob all in one go. After cleaning all the chocolate off your face, you then set about munching the little walnut you saved until the end.

I'm not sure who the maker was, but I think it may have been Fry's or Rowntree McKintosh. At the moment you can buy them here for £1.50 to £2.00 for a pack of three.

Good luck,

John

Nestlés launched the Walnut Whip in 1910, before that it was made by Duncan's of Edinburgh :)

Hi all you can buy them in M&S in a packet of 3 there is only one walnut on the top cannot remember what price they are and the chocolate is pretty thick. At one time they were doing a kind of a coffee one but they don' do that now unless they bring them out at Christmas time.
Now Rosie you mentioned Duncans of Edinburgh their hazelnut was to die for and their Parisian creams, do you knoe I still have the wee narrow box that the chocolates used to come in, I think there would be about 6/7 chocs in it, I must take a picture of it and try and send it in.
I better stop talking about chocolate because my mouth is watering here and I was told by the doctors nurse to stop eating sweet things as the old cholestral is up over 5point something or oter.

Hello John
Thanks for your reply...I got a magnifying glass out to see if I could see the manufacturer on the packet and as there was only wan wee lousy walnut, I thought it would be a different maker to the original....and I was right. The maker is Cocoa Deli which is a trademark for Kinnerton Company from Scotland...definitely not the original...anyway they still taste nice. I think all the sweeties we ate as kids never seem to taste the same as we get older...and they seem to have shrunk as well

Hi Rose

Thanks so much for that information, I thought perhaps Fry's made it. It's aweful when you have been away from things for a long time and forget names and makers etc.

Cheers

Hi Amelia
Thanks for jogging the old memory re: Parisian creams...how I loved them...Had no idea about the coffee flavoured walnut whips, I think they try different flavours just to sell more. Sometimes I wish they would just leave things the way they are, same here in Oz at Easter...you can buy choc chip buns but never will you find any with peel, but they still sell them as traditional...to me a traditional hot cross bun has peel in them...is it that way back home?

Hi All
On the subject of walnut whips again I went into M&S on Wednesday and they were doing 2 boxes for £2 three in each of them, they had mint ones so I tried them and instead of the walnut on the other ones they had wee orange sprinklers over the top, they still have the ones with the walnut. You've still got to sook the top of them until they melt and then give them a bite or maybe I'll have to put my "wallies" in before I start eating them  I'm sorry I told my better half that they were delicious because when I went in to the kitchen he'd been in my stash box :x
Sheila & Margaret is your mouth watering when you read this :D Pity the post is high or I would post some onto you
