toys at Christmas

Hi All was watching the tv today and they were showing all the toys from the past what was your favourite toy or what was the toys you remember buying your children.

Hi Amelia,
My favourite toy was Hornby- Dublo train set, It was worked from the mains via a transformer and all my pals used to come up to our hoose to play with it. On the other hand my Da once shaped a wooden knife for me as a Xmas present and I was over the moon with that too [that was when I was younger].

Hi Amelia & Danny

I remember a wooden swing my Dad made me. He hung it from the doorway in the living room and lobby. I used to swing on it that high I nearly ended up in the bedroom. I was very young when I got that. In later years I remember my first skating boots and another year my first trannie (transistor radio) oh what a joy that was! My pals and I all out at the light standard (electric pole) trying to tune into Radio Luxemburg. Oh, the memories, great days back then! Cheers, Sheila

Yes we had a swing in the doorway too and I loved playing on it [Ma used to have a pully for the clothes too] I remember every Sunday night listening to Radio Luxembourg at 6pm to the top 20 and it played the 20th song first then the 19 th until you got to number 1. Yes Happy days indeed Shelia. !!!

Hi Chinas A torch that could light up three different colours. Probably only cost about three and a tanner, but it was great while it lasted. Surreyboy.

Hi All,

What a great question Amelia, it conjures up a lot of memories of Christmas past. I can remember seeing a cowboy rifle hanging in the window in the toy shop around the corner from us, I think it was cally road maybe but I cant remember the name of the shop. Anyway, the rifle was beautiful, it had a lovely shiny blue barrel, silver and white stock which had a red star on it, a bit like the Texas rangers ones. I couldn't stop looking at it, every single day I would go there just to see it and pray that no one bought it in case Santa would be good to me!

Some weeks later, Christmas day arrived and I got up all excited and went to look for the present pile to see what I had been given, looked hard at the shape of the packages and could not see one that had the shape of a riffle so I could open it first, but there wasn't one! So, I set about opening all of my presents all of which were exciting but alas no rifle Anyway the empty feeling in my stomach went and I had a great Christmas day Went to bed a happy little boy and grateful for the presents I had received.

The next day my Granda came round and gave my sisters their presents, went into his pocket and pulled out a little white card and said " Here son this is for you " I looked at it and it was a card that had dates and numbers written in the inside, I looked at it and it didn't really make any sense to me so I showed it to my Ma and she explained it was a payment (Weekly) card and was for buying a toy at the toy shop around the corner. My Granda said " get ready Son and we will walk round to the shop and you can choose something for your Christmas " Needless to say we were round there like a shot, but when we got there the rifle was gone from the window I handed the card over to the man in the shop and he said " Why are you looking so sad? " and I replied " I was really hoping I would get that rifle hanging in the window"
He bent down under the counter, popped up and said " Do you mean this one? Your Granda asked me to keep it for you weeks ago! There you go Son it's yours " HAPPY DAYS INDEED EH!

Hi All those were happy days when you were young and John I bet you had the best granda in the world that day. Remember you used to pay up different things in shops but had to pay the price thy were asking before you got the goods

I remember there used to be a shop in Rutherglen Rd. opposite the park I think it was called Browns maybe I'm wrong but they sold furniture maybe you'll remember it Danny and I remember buying a bookcase from it and a telephone table when I came up to Castlemilk as the shop was still doing business. They also used to give you a card if you needed bigger furniture and you went down to the Elite Bedding Company in Moffat St. facing St. Mungo halls (do you know I had to think hard there what those halls were called) They also sold metal frames you measured your recess and went down to the elite and they made a metal frame that fitted into the recess for the bed and then you had to buy mattress to put on top of it.
Talking about beds that's another subject I shall write about but not now as I changed my bed today and haven't remade it yet so I'm offski.

Yeah my Granda was special, not just that day but all through his life, he was always good to us kids and we loved and appreciated him. God bless him.
