Sunny weather

Post by DannyGill »

Hi Gang,
Sitting here in my wee sheltered housing flat in London and the sun is splitting the sky, which makes a change from all the rain we've had since Xmas, well My mind was going back to the mid-1950's when I was a wean and your Ma would say right next week we're going for a day doon to Saltcoats. You'd catch the train [was it the Central or St Enoch's ?] early morning and you would go for a paddle in the watter and your Ma and Granny would sloosh some of the salt-water on their face [to get a sun tan] and there was always arcades there where you could play machines , oh it was great and then Ma would buy you a poke of chips as you all walked along the sea front. This was a great day out and you couldny wait till you got back home to the soo-side to tell all your pals about your day out doon in Saltcoats, do you remember those days ?.
Regards.
Danny. :)

Hi Danny
I have great memories of the family going to Saltcoats for the day, sometimes even for a week if we were lucky. The family would make up a big batch of sandwiches and we would sit on the beach eating them. Granny and some of the Aunts would rent the folding deck chairs. Dad and Uncles off to the bookies while the weans and women had a wee paddle and looked for seashells. Then a bag of chips when the time was getting on.
Beautiful weather here in Vancouver yesterday and today, but forecast is for heavy rain tomorrow. Hope your weather is still sunny?
Hello to all the rest of the gang on here. Margaret I think the Vicks did help me and Amelia also the crystals. Was a long haul though, just over three weeks before I felt well again. Hope all of you are well? The forums here seem to be very quiet these days and I see we've still not heard from John, so hope he's okay.
Take care everyone, Cheers, Sheila :)

Hi Shelia,
I forgot all about the deck-chairs and remember they were an awful thing trying to unfold ha ha, oh and just remembered too that Ma used to make a wee Hamper with sandwiches and a Thermos flask with Tea. Money was tight in those far off times and our Ma's had to watch the penny's. The weather here in London has really picked up the last week and we've had plenty of sunshine which makes you feel good, after all the months of rain we had it really is good to be able to go out without getting soaked. Still no sign of John , yes I hope he's OK and hopefully he will get in touch if only to tell us he's alright. I agree the forum is going through another lean spell recently let's hope it picks up again in the near future. Hope everybody else in the gang is keeping OK and hope to hear from you soon.
Regards.
Danny :)

Hi Danny and Sheila...Well, I wish I was living where you are living because it is 20 degs, F. outside and the wind would cut you in two today...Yesterday it was almost 60 degs but a cold front, as the weather man calls it, came through during the night and boy it is cold...BUT luckily no snow...All our snow has almost gone and I see some of my daffodils poking their heads through the ground.
Talking about Saltcoats, we, too, went to Saltcoats for our holidays and there were donkeys on the beach that you could have a wee ride on for I think thrupence a go...Then there were, I think it was maybe the Salvation Army and they would come and set up a wee tent and get all the weans on the beach to sing wee songs one of the being "Deep and Wild" and one that went like "the poor man built his house upon the sand and the rain came tumbling down, and the wise man built his house upon the rock." Can't remember the rest of the words...We had no swimming costumes in those days, just hitch up your skirt or troosers and paddle away...Rented a wee room in a house near the beach and we, all five of us, slept on a couple of beds and had kitchen privileges...ha. ha. Took a walk at night down by the beach and if we were lucky got a pokey hat...

Hi gang
We all seem to be getting different weather. We've had three sunny days in a row not that warm but sunny, and now they tell us we may get snow again! It was officially the first day of spring here the other day, so not sure where this snow fits in to that. You're right Danny those old deck chairs were a nightmare. Got my legs tangled up in them a few times. :o Oh and I had forgot about the flasks of tea.
Margaret I had forgot about the donkey rides, loved them! Funny you mentioning those songs about "the poor man built his house upon the sand" and "deep and wide". I sing them all the time to my Grand kids, they love them, the 2 year old does all the actions and the 11 month old try's to. :) My son and daughter think it's brilliant how the kids respond and how they get right into it.
Our family did the same by renting a wee room in Saltcoats and the whole family (Granny, Aunts with their kids) would all end up staying with us as well. Everyone piled together into the beds and I remember one of the babies got put in a drawer to sleep and another in a suitcase. Such happy memories!
I hope the weather starts to improve for those shivering and for us who may be about to shiver. Take care everyone and hope you are all keeping well.
Cheers, Sheila
