THE DENTIST'S

Hi Folks,
Just wondering how many of us had a good/bad experience going to the Dentists , I use to love when I was a wee wean [with milk teeth] and you put the tooth that had came out under your pillow and the ["soo-side tooth Fairy"] had visited you during the night and left a penny [or was it more ?]. Then as you got older it was murder Polis going to the Dentist because he clamped this "gas mask thing" over your face and told you to count backwards to 10, I think All I ever got to was 5 then you were out for the count. Then later on you would get the "needle" to numb your mouth and the bottom half of your face was freezing cold, and you could feel the Dentist yanking your teeth/tooth out !!!!. Worst of all was the sound of the Dentist's drill as he drilled and hit a nerve and you were in agony. I went to a Dentist and I think his name was Mr Good or Goodman on Rutherglen Rd not far from McNeil st and he wasn't too bad but a lot of other people went to Dentists and said they were "butchers" , I think there was one by the name of Taylor in Crown st and he had a bad reputation. Can you remember going to the Dentists ?.

hi danny, i remember a dentist that was in abotsford place think she was called mrs gold or goldsmith she was a right butcher aswell ,to this day im still frightened of the dentist thats why i always look after my teeth ha ha ha ,think it was the smell of the place and the drill .......take care.. ann

Hope you're keeping well, Yes even though today I have full dentures top and bottom Ann and I only go to the Dentist's for a yearly check-up of my gums I still dread sitting in the waiting room. I think everybody [or a lot of soo-side Folks] have a lot of bad memories. That's interesting Ann as I had never heard of a lady Dentist before, oh the sound of that drill starting up and the bloomin Dentist saying to you lay back and RELAX !!!! lol. Hiya Ann, I remember that butcher of a dentist from Abbotsford, her name was Goldie. The cheek of her enticing kids into her surgery with lollipops and sweets then taking out 4 or 5 teeth without parental permission. She would never get away with that these days. Can say I went there only once cos I heard about the lollipops. Mum was a bit angry though. but nowadays I can see the funny side.

Hi All I remember the dentist well was always frightened from them especially Florence St. clinic.
There was a dentist on Eglinton St. or Pollokshaws just facing the Star bar and his name was Gummers looked the other day but his name is away he was one up but they now have a clinic on the ground flat maybe he's still there
I have a woman dentist not saying anything just in case she comes on the Gorbals site
The dentist we had up in Ardmaleish Rd the weans all nicknamed him EGOR you didn't need gas as the smell of his breath would have knocked you out. He was our dentist but I always liked him if you were to get a tooth/teeth pulled out you went on a Friday as that is when the Aneathatist??(spelling) came out to give the gas ad air.
I went one Friday and as I was just coming out of the gas and air after getting my tooth out I heard the guy saying is there much damage and the dentist said there is a big hole in the roof and it will cost a lot to fix it.
I started greeting I canna pay any money because I've no got any, the two of them started laughing an said that there had been a break in the night before and that the burglars had got in through the roof I could have crawled under the chair as I felt that stupid

Hi Amelia,
Yes that "gas mask" was a terrible experience for a wean [or anybody] and it was always a tumbler of "pink mouthwash" that the Dentist gave me rinse my mouth out with after an extraction. The Dentist I went to was on the top floor of a Tenement near to McNeil st on Rutherglen Rd and similar to Josie Stuksis he always gave me a "toy" for being a good Patient ha ha. I don't know if the "needle" was any better as it froze your mouth alright but you actually could feel the Dentist getting a hold of your tooth with his pliers and yanking it out. My Ma always gave me a scarf to wrap round my mouth as she said if you breathe in the cold air it will make your mouth more sore in the morning !!!. When I was just 15 yeas old I had to get all my top teeth taken out as I was told I had "Piareah" of the gums, My ,a took me over to Chisolm st just at the Trongate and I was given the gas and all my top teeth extracted. I staid in bed all that weekend, getting by on just soup through a straw, then when I went to work on the Monday morning all the other Brickies were calling me "Popeye" . I had to wait i think 2 months so my gums would harden then I went to that same Dentist in Chilsom st to get my top denture. Then when I was 18 years old I had a good drink one Friday night and was sick in the toilet bowl and My teeth disappeared when I flushed the toilet, that learnt me a lesson that in future if I was going to be sick then I would remove my "Wallies" first ha ha. Hi All I forgot all about Chisholm St. dentist you brought it all back to me I don't think I was ever there.
The weather here is still not bad so I hope it will be good tomorrow as my sister/brother-in-law and myself are off to Edinburgh we have started the family tree found out we have connections in Haiywa(Spelling)?? I wonder if they have a plantation A holiday We are looking for names as we were at Galston on Wednesday trekking through graveyards looking on tombstones, I'll need to get a life Danny

Hi Amelia,
Well good luck to you with your Family tree, it's great I think to look back to where our family's originated, Hawaii now your talking Amelia ha ha, plenty of sunshine there , although you know when I worked in Australia 74-76 it used to get too warm and as I think I stated before we would start bulding bricks at 6 am [if we were outside the city] and finish a 2 in the afternoon because by that time the humidity was terrible and when we finished I was off to the nice air-coditioned bar for a few cold beers. Funninly enough when I was back home in Glasgow the other month I met up with Colin MacKie who does so much work for the southern Necropolis, well I met him and his good lady Elsie in the SN and they gave me a guided tour round the graveyard. It really has some amazing stories attached to it and to think this is where I played as a wean nearly 60 years ago lol. Will finish for now Amelia good luck to you and the Family. x
