About the Gorbals. The area and the website.

There has been much written and created in words images and music to celebrate and describe the diverse story of this area of Glasgow. It is a story concocted with heavy doses of fiction, fantasy and misinterpretations intermingled with the often harsh truth.

There is a potted history of the area here.

This website is an ambitious attempt to create a one stop shop for information about the area be it from the past, present or even looking to the future. It is to be managed by a groups of dedicated volunteers to become a resource for the existing residents as well as a valuable resource for this with an interest in its past. It will offer links to the existing sites there are out there which already have collections of images or stories.

The Gorbals, for the purposes of this site, is the area bounded by the River Clyde, the railway bridge from Central Station and the M74 motorway extension. It extends across Oatlands, Hutchesontown and Laurieston.

There will be regular updates about the many current events and activities which are taking place in the area as well as much to reflect on the wide ranging story of the area, the organisations and the individuals who shave all played a part both great and small in adding to the vibrancy of the Gorbals story.

We are grateful for the support received from Bridging The Gap and the Spirit of the Gorbals fund which has allowed a bit more focus in being able to develop this ongoing project.

We hope that you will find this site both useful as well as interesting.
