Is there any rag stores left in the Gorbals or even Glasgow? all I see now are shops that give you money for clothes by the weight I suppose it's something similar as they used to throw your clothes on scales to see much weight they were. There is one down Victoria Rd and there was one facing the bingo in Main St. Rutherglen but it is closed now.
There was a rag store around the corner from us in Surrey St. and there was one next to Cecils pub in Commercial Rd. just before you went to Spring land I think that was what it was called there was a few steps you had to go up before you came to the door.
Years ago there used to be a shop off Stonelaw Rd I think it was Hamilton St it came out at the Richmond park laundry they took your clothes but they had to be wearable stated a price and if someone bought it they took a percentage of it, don't know whatever happened to the shop.

Not living in Glesga anymore I really couldn't say but I do remember the Richmond Park vans flying up and down the roads in the soo-side. Here in London we have all these Charity shops where you can buy 2nd hand clothes cheap[ not anymore ]. I prefer to go to Primark as you seem to get a better deal and as a pensioner every penny counts.

Re: Rag Stores
HI Amelia...There used to be a rag store up a wee lane across the street from the Paragon..Like before you went to Ian Fisher's the fishmongers. I think you were able to take rags there and they weighed them and gave you money for them...This was back in the 40's, 50's. We left Sandyfaulds Street in 1956/57 so I was not down there to often except to go to St. Francis..
Also, how about the "Wee Barras" on Commercial Lane the back of the police station on Lawmoor Street..They did not take old clothes but sold them...I still can remember the smell in that place...ugh..
