Memories of Dixons Blazes Ironworks
Would really like to hear from anyone who has memories or family members connected with the Dixons Blazes Ironworks at Crown Street. This is for a future history project highlighting the rich history of the area, Thanks.....colin@southernnecropolis.com

I think it's great all the work done at Southern Necropolis by you. this little bit of info will probably not shed too much light on Dixon's blazes for you but in the late 1950's when I was a wean about 10 years old I stood at the top of Alice street [where Big Bonnies and wee Bonnies schools stood and watched the big brick chimney being blown up. There was dust everywhere and all the neighbours from Fauldhouse st and Alice st etc were standing there watching it as another part of soo-side history bit the dust [so to speak].

I have a photo copy of Dixon Blazes I think it must have been my brother who gave it to me as he is a great one for going round all the museums.
It tells you Dixon Blazes (Govan Iron Works) was founded in 1837 by William Dixon and was the first iron works to be established in Glasgow.
At one time it employed 1,000 men and continued in production until 1958.
"Ten Quid" who used to come on our last Gorbals site used to work in it he lives in Australia. Don't know how you could get in touch with him maybe some of his old buddies would know as I don't think he keeps very well and I haven't seen his name on this new site.
There is a web at the top of the page that I have got it is www.scran.ac.uk

I remember when I was young they had to shunt the burning coals over to the Molls Myre and tip them and it would light up the whole sky.

I remember the "pug" train that took the red hot slag from Dixons Blazes to the Molls Myre and tip up all the stuff but where/how did the railt rack get to the Molls Myre. Would it have went to Polmadie Railway sheds then turned off to get to the Molls ?. I take it that the Molls Myre public house at the Rutherglen Rd end of Polmadie Rd was named after that site can you rember when it opened I think it was early 60's ?.
