Nancy Hi again. You've got a very good memory - you jogged mine Rose and Jimmy did work at that other Bar before the "piggie". God it seems sooooooo long ago. I used to trot about the bar in the 60's with a wee mini skirt - would get arrested if I was caught with that now. I will be 65 come next March and I am still working full time and loving it! Want to keep going till I (eventually) drop. Don't know if its the money or sheer force of habit. Spend a lot of my dosh on my growing band of grandweans and great grandweans. (what's new!), the latter consists of a wee boy just 6 weeks old and two mad year and half old girls. Margaret's Jade is a great laugh she is pally with a couple of people who used to be on a training course that I ran in the old library in McNeil Street. Has Jade got any weans? How about yourself? What about the rest of the family there must be a good wee bunch of next generation Shanklands. The Gorbals would not be the same without them. I have spent the last 5 years working in Easterhouse - good people but not a patch on the Gorbalites. Best wishes to all. Rita

Any of the boys or girls around who hung around the beehive corner at Thistle Street and Cumberland Street across from the Cosy Bar. The years would be late fifties to mid sixties. I often think of my old friends Podgie, Spike, Dougie, Bruin, Matt Bradey, Hughie McGinley, Frank Conner, Buff, Eddie Walker and John Cambell. What great times we had back then football, jumps, rat catching, bogies, running in and out the cosy barand midden raking. Nae haufs nae quarters nae bits. Great days, great times would be great to hear from any of them

F.A.O. Thomas Stobbie, Sorry to tell you Thomas but to my knowledge Swan St was not in the Gorbals it was off Canal st nearest main road was Dobbies Loan and that was the other side of the Clyde. There is a Swanston St but that is in Bridgeton which is also accross the "watter" from the Gorbals. I have a street directory which was called Frame,s V.P. Street Directory cost two shillings in old money. The 2 schools that you also went to you were not in the Gorbals.

Hello eddie from alness thanks for the memories about knots resturant in florence st i can still smell the the ribs cabbage and totties the mince and peas but especially the dumpling.did you no the dumpling wis made in the wash house in the back it must have been the biggest in the world.the old sooside patter wis when red church in rutherglen rd wis bombed during the war the germins were aiming for knots trying to starve out the gorbals.another tale wis the dumpling wis that big deserters hid in it during the war. tam lennie of florence st cheers eddie

Tell me aboot the birds and bees, Tell me aboot the little trees, Tell me a story, before Ah go tae sleep. Gorbals nursery rhyme Once upon a time in the Gorbals, there was a dilapidated public house called the Britannia. It was a seedy Victorian establishment, situated at the bottom of a grimy tenement block that had seen far better days. But the legendary Britannia was still very popular with the hundreds of heavy drinkers and hard cases who frequented the place. Known locally as 'the Brit', the bar was situated right in the heart of the notorious old Gorbals, on the corner of Thistle Street and Rutherglen Road. It had long been branded as a drinking shop that catered primarily for winos, bampots, headbangers and generally the element of society that most respectable people went out of their way to avoid. The Brit had become known for being the roughest, toughest drinking den in the whole of Glasgow and it had no problem at all living up to that dubious reputation. We used to joke that the pub was so rough that anyone in there without a scar was probably a tourist. It was even said that the Brit was ! so intimidating the police rarely ventured inside because they were too afraid of what might happen in such an unpredictable environment. When we Gorbals street boys looked through the smoke-stained windows of the Brit, the scene resembled not so much something you might expect from the so-called swinging 60s but rather a scene from the impoverished 30s.

Well that is unreal, ma Maw she was a hawker went ti the Brigate many a cauld morning wi her but the mince and tatties was always a treat. Aye ma Da he sung my love is like a red red rose only when he was steaming , (every week end) lets face it all the men used to poor their hearts out when they were drinking and a lot of no bad chanters at that , some great parties, Me Artie and Bertha we used to drain all the empties put it back into a bottle and sell it for coppers to who ever needed a curer fur their sore heids, one letter from America asked why do we miss it well I dont think it is a case of missing all the poverty and if you were a real Glaswigin you just knew how to not get messed wi all the neds and bullies that is why they all hid wee gangs to feart to walk by themself not all of them but hey there were Neds oot in the county as well, tackled a few of them braw lads from Wishaw when we used to go visit inlaws on ma brother Arhtur side but we did allright, ! and it is all part of our memories that we make as we go through life some good bad and just plain fugly. Oh and aye ah remember Sparrow McLain used to winch a sparrow but he was from I think Caly road then Anna Birrle she stole ma first love Ha Ha hope she is doing well she was from the Gorbals and has the nicest smile . Sorry to hear that Donald Peden passed he was a looker to was there just two brothers or three . Will have to ask Ackey when I talk to him. If all goes well with ma two sisters Irene and Kathleen we hope to visit Scotland in the spring dont like cauld weather. So we will be chapping on a few doors wi a cake in hand for a cuppa and a good blether. Ten Quid laddie hope all is going well with you it is a real drag for some of us that have to go through what is in our path of life, sucks for a lot of us but what hell just hiv ti git oan wi it like we have a choice. Still waiting oan any pictures of any of you see if I can remember all the faces, me I still hive the roon face wi a few wrinkles but still going strong. Oh and please tell Angie master son a hello from me. I can still laugh when John McCue brought all the weans that he had in a soccer team he brought them all to New York and their eyes were spinning in there nappers like peeries as they had never seen so much food and the fuss getting made over them the yakns loved them and you know how we spoke when we first get aff the plain it was a forieng language! the americans thought that we sound like we are singing aye till they picked up on fur effs sake so a lot of them got a skite oan the heid now that is what we laugh at ourselfs forget the miserable times and old Gray building and over crowded hooses. Man here it is the Mexicans we have families that are twenty handedand living in with a bit of luck a four bedroom hoose or even weeire, but you do what it takes to get to your goals or dreams without the lamenting. Oh does anyone know of a paper on the garn gard or springburn like this one if so could use it. So best of health ti every one and life is just life easier fur sum than others so again enjoy DAM

I worked for 12 years in Norfolk court high rise, Gorbals Cross. I worked as a conicierge. I have in my possession many photographs of Gorbals streets taken before the final demolition. THIS is to Doris Austin there is a young family living in your auld hoose the mother is a hauker doon the brigait. I was telling oor john about you on the web site so he had a good few funny stories to tell us about the old days. I am the second youngest but i remember your mum and dad he used to sing a song my love is like a red red rose and oor betty who is our youngest at 52 and myself remember edward brought us back toys from the merchant navy and oor john said he got him a jacket he will never forget it it was red satin with a dragon on the back. My mum and dad died aged 66yrs that was 18 yrs ago but still miss them My mum spoke highly about your mum. John McLellan was also my cousing and sadly John passed on several year ago too, he was only 51yrs it was very sad. John was married to Irene and they had two daughters Karen & Pauline, unfortunately John never saw his Grandchildren but he has 3 grandaughters now. Sorry to be passing sad news. Hello all, Ten Quid sorry to hear you have to go for more treatment , it is a bummsr, but if it keeps you alive and you can handle it that will be fine. We are going through a lot of sickness in the family at the moment one of my sisters and nephew plus a niece . So you better no be doing any more fast driving and fires you get to the stage when you have to pay to get it done breaks ma wallet but what the heck nae choice, so take it easy, and hope all goes well with your treatment. Hey to the Shanklins I remember the family , I mean Bevthall St roon the courner and was not the Factoes close on Bethall St I remember three quid a month then my last recollection was up to a pearl diver (fiver) and whit ma maw hid tae go through ti get the rent money John the Pawn he must hiv been a millionair , all the swag and gear he would give you a few measly shillings for. We of course used to slag him and call him a real 5 to 2 even although our family were all so mixed Caflics Proddyies and jews oh but now ah would take up to much space to say how many different cultures we have , but as the auld saying goes we are awe is it Jock Tamsons Bairns read that some were. See some one is going at the mix wi a widden spoon trying ti get Jim Steens attention some folks ur no happy unless they are stirring up trouble mayby it is his cousin in Florida same name hey Jim In Florida tok yir advice and stayed in ca that was one of the things he told me when I met him at his Aunty Beckys hoose in Florida nice man. Hi Nancy, Yes I remember your family well -particularly Patsy, Billy and John. You could always tell a Shankland by their beautiful blonde hair. I remember meeting Jade some 6 years ago when I worked for Gorbals Initiative. I forget though who she is connected to. I lived up above the Pig and Whistle and worked with Rose and Jimmy in the "olden days". I am related to Billy and John Hawkins who were friendly with your brothers in their younger days. To James and Christina Philbin or anyone who can jog their memory, As related previously I lived at 66 Mcneil Street and would sometimes venture into the closes and backcourt directly across the street. I don't know if my memory is playing tricks or not, (at my age it does sometimes) but I remember what I think were oval tin plaques with the number of people residing in the "dwelling house" I was reading a book recently about the various epidemics of scarlet fever and even more serious conditions which broke out periodically in Gorbals and how Glasgow Corporation tried to restrict the numbers of people living in houses. Can anyone remember such info outside the doors of tenement flats in the Gorbals or any other area in Glasgow? Does anyone recall such occurences as typhoid fever? Cheers Rita

I remember going to stay with my granny black in shaw street and playing in the middens. My mum was marion back, her brothers are thomas, henry and duncan and wee sister anne. Just found lots of old photos some date back to 1938 with linnie austin, another date not known marion black nee gardner with madge Mcarthur another with bobby mack 1941 and 1940 with thomas, matt, sall vaughn with my granny, theres also loads more but no names and dates. There is loads of her when she worked at the hip yard. Its lovley to read this site for all the stories and names people remember that sound familiar.

If you lived in the Gorbals in the forties there was a resturant you all should know, it was near the bottom of Florence Street and it sold the biggest dumpling you ever saw totties, cabbage and rbis cost only sixpence a plate his totties peas and mince were the best you ever ate but Mr Knott's dumpling with custard just effen great does that bring any memories for you ten quid?

Hi Anne O'Neill, nice to hear from you, Winnie Curran has been living in Corby N.Hants for many years. Jessie (her Mum) still going strong, however unfortunately, John (her Dad) passed on several years ago. Winnie married Donald Peden and they had 3 boys? (I think) dont have much contact with them since Uncle John died. Winnie is widowed now too Donald passed on a few years back due to a tragic accident. As far as I know they are all doing ok. Geezus ten quid , sounds lke you are a tad daffy, doon hills setting fires braces an awe, then a snake I would hiv headed to the hills shouting every man fur themselfs. But gled ye didnae get a wee dod taken oot yir arse. Some one asked me aboot ma life uh well cannie complain , some o us hiv lovely weans that go on to schools and further education, ha was not me. We hiv bin through what a lot of people go through. Drugs, booze, not me or Tosh tried to drink and smoke but it smelled to much and being cannie ah though why buy something to burn and make me ill for days (drink) been drunk three times in ma life and still remember ma da saying see you Doris ah think you better stick to food instead but family but I manged ti survive and them also with the grace of whatever. The rest of the Austins we have all done pretty good excetion of one Artie still the party man but ugh to each his own. I have three kids two girls and a son (pain in my arse) and six grandchildren .! We all live in the same wee toon which is good most of the time. Tosh and myself we are good to gether total opposites and we all know how that goes. But through it all we are still with each other 43 years man I need a friggin medal.(no snide comments on that one please) Went back to Glasgow in the late seventies openend up a couple of busnesses, did extremly well , but to many people that thought they were fly and no loyalty from any one , Tosh and me we split for a year but Ackie he told me Doris get back and dont be fighting over other people told you we are still good friends.Must hiv been one of the few times I listened to him. My life has been pretty exciting wi awe the stuff and new challanges . We both retired at fifty lucky us but always into some thing Real Estate was my passion so it worked out well for us. Life is like that song Elvis sung Lord sometimes you gave me a moutain and we always managed to climb it. What more can I say. Had it all cops n robbers a! ll kinds of folks sum good then bad and really fugly. Glad to read about Angie Masters tell her Doris Austin is still doing the glasgow scliff and send her my best. Ah could go oan awe day some great stories ah even had the bliddy FBI at ma door looking for all the guys that jumped ship in Ny to drunk to make it back , then again some one called up immigration had them at ma door and you what ah love it is always as the saying goes one of our own kind ah seem to get lucky and the people told me Doris watch yir back and trust no one. I even forgave Ackei for telling his family that he caught me in bed wi another man fur Christs sakes but it is like ah say we am sure hiv all had our bliddy days , but am still on ttop of ma wee hill .Had a great life going to all the clubs, and dances loved to dress up , picnics oh all the good stuff , and now I reckon life is to short to get to worried about anything easier said than done but just got to keep on trucking. My last brain operation has worked out fine burnt ma friggin throat , bu! t on the way to better health hip hip hurra . So thank you for asking and hope life treats you all fine So again to awe you nice people oot there keep the faith an yi dont hiv to be religious ti dae that. Hi to you all. I am trying to find any info on my grandad Patrick James Boyle born 1908 in Glasgow. He was in the Pioneers and married Mary Anne Kilkie in 1935 at st Francis church Gorbals, my dad was born at 133 Balornock Rd, I believe this to be Stobhill hospital? some of my dads brothers and sisters were born at Ruckyhill army camp [dont know if spelling is right]in the mid 40s. Other addresses I have are 4 Roukenburn St in 1933, 132 South Portland St around 1938 or 1939ish. Patrick Boyle became a butchers assistant but died at 10 1/2 Eglinton St in 1946. I also had an uncle that lived on Eglinton St around the 50s,60s or 70s and his name was Archie Boyle. I would love to hear from anybody who remembers any of them or if any relatives are there then please get intouch.

Hiya I'm Linda Fletcher (nee Reid) born in Rutherglen Road in my Granny's house, moved to Waddell Street, then 487 Cumberland Street, went to St Francis Primary, the John Bosco, married James Fletcher (Big Flecky) had 2 children Vicky & Barry Fletcher, Vicky is now married to Robert Dempster and they have 4 boys, Barry is now (almost married) to Victoria Day from Partick, they have a son James Barry Fletcher, giving Jamie and I 5 wonderful Grandsons, Barry and Victoria are due their 2nd baby in January 2008 (God willing) Jamie has 2 brothers Billy & Rab Fletcher. DAM hi there recently we hiv had severe frost for 2 weeks killed all the bananas n trees of all sorts so all hands on deck cutting them down before the bush fire season. It has been so dry here i even gave a hand neck brace back brace on my electric car my 4yr old granddaughter driving me about as i set fire to all the piles o wood n leaves (she is definitely a gorbals lass), never seen frost like it in a sub-tropical area before! Our prime minister says no such thing as climate change then maybe he is rite HE SAYS HE IS RITE ON EVERYTHING ELSE i remember drawing on the tar on the footpath in the gorbals as a kid HOT SUMMERS but that was then this is now so on with the clearing awera best "boyle"

Oh, Oh, Hugh Douglas he was a fine boy but always in trouble. Our mums told us to stay from him, he must be in his seventies. Talk about your reputation following you after all these years he is still the talk of the place. I remember when he beat up the little girl and her dad got hughie in a dark close, he never went near her again and hughie never spoke of it. I am sure he is not the mad person he was, he is too old, but then you never know.
