Typical Glaswegian Dinner Menu- 50's/60's

Post by braveheart »

Hi All,

I made a knock up meal for some of the Grandchildren the other day and I explained to them that I would be making it the way my Mum did when I was a kid. One of the children asked if I would be doing a starter and some afters.....So I said yes I would and I would make up a little menu for them so they could see what they would be getting ;) ;) ;) I thought I would share this with you, I'm sure it will be very familiar to you

MINCE AND TATTIES

STARTER

Grab a big outsider from the loaf of bread and dip it into the mince pot while it is cooking and enjoy    Making sure your Mammy doesn't catch you in the act :P :P

MAIN COURSE

Mince and mash potatoes with some processed peas, lots of gravy and another thick slice of bread to mop up the gravy at the end of your meal ( thus saving any washing up )

AFTERS

Grab the fork that was used to make the mash and scrape the remaining mash up that was left in the pot and spread it on another big outsider from the loaf, not forgetting to stick a load of margarine on the bread first

Well we had big appetites in those days

The look on their faces when I explained all of this to them was amazing, they were all shouting in excitement " Come on then Grandad, can we help you do the cooking? " Bless them :D :D :D I decided to play it safe and give them chicken nuggets, chips and beans. A bit boring I know, but I didn't want to take the risk of getting into trouble with their parents    But next time I just may give them a treat, Mince and Tatties the way I had it when I was a kid :D :D :D

Take care.

My Ma used to make 'Stovies' on a Saturday afternoon for my Da to eat when he came back from the pub, I used to enjoy it as well with a couple slices of bread.

Hi,

I loved Stovies too with a nice bit of bread and butter. Very filling and very tasty meal made from left overs usually. Can you remember how your Mum used to make stovies?

Take care.

Hi Margaret,

Oh I loved Ribs and Cabbage, haven't had that in years! I well remember an eating establishment near The Barra's which I think was on London Rd or just off there, I'm sure that was all they sold in there. My Mum used to take me there when we were making a trip to the Barra's.....Lovely :)

Take care.

As far as I remember the stovies my mother used to make was, potatoes carrots onion maybe another vegetable, and stewing beef and sausages, it was in a thick gravy, not sure how the gravy was made, its 30-40 years ago so im not completely sure. each housewife would probably have their variation (women done most of the cooking in them days)

Hi everyone I love ribs but I take them on their own don't like cabbage, had them last week got them out of McGraddies the butcher I think he used to be in Cumberland St??
I'm back on again after being of the site for over a week forgot my password etc. I will have to be writing everything down now  Thanks Margaret.
You are right about the shop John selling ribs was it on the Saltmarket there is a shop that you can sit in on the London Rd facing the barras and you can buy whelks and mussels don't know if they do the ribs.
The barras is not the same as it used to be there is a lot of the stalls inside empty.

Hi all

John, I'm shocked you never gave the kids mince and tatties, they probably would have loved it. I don't make it too often but used to make it when my kids were young. My daughter would carry on and whine that she didn't like mince and potatoes, she only liked shepherd's pie. So her mince got put in a dish with potatoes spread on top, under the grill for a minute and then she was delighted with her shepherd's pie. I make stovies from time to time that's my son's all time favourite. I use large beef sausages (links that I cut into three), then carrot, onion, turnip, potatoes, salt and pepper. (I brown the sausages in a pan first to try to get any excess grease out of them) I use bisto for the gravy and thicken it with some corn starch. Have made it for some Canadians and they loved it. Think some people used to make stovies with lamb or mutton. I also hated ribs! How about the old stand by in the old days, chips & egg? Used to love that! All this talk of food is making me hungry, oh and what I would give for a big outsider.... okay now I'm starving! Cheers, Sheila
