Happy Saint Patrick's Day to one and all...
There was the usual big parade down Fifth Avenue in New York today and boy was it cold...I watched a little bit of it on TV and they were all marching out quickly...Felt sorry for the wee girls who were doing the Irish dancing...I am sure their wee legs were freezing...But, St. Patrick must have been shining down on us because Washington, DC, closed down because of five to six inches of snow...That would have been no parade for us to see. Great day for the Irish...played over and over again. Margaret

I know it has passed but Happy St Patricks Day to you too....I would have loved to see that parade, it sounds like fun....even although it must have been very cold for those who marched. Glad you managed to see it a few times. We celebrate it here in Australia but not as much as other countries.
Glad you enjoyed it.

Re: HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY
Belated happy Saint Patricks day.
This may interest you, (or not), one of the places that lays claim to being the birthplace of St. Patrick is a place called Banwen in Wales which is just South of the Brecon Beacons.
St Patrick lived just after the Romans had left Britain and at a time when there was still a noticeable Roman influence. As a youngster he was stolen into slavery by one of the groups of white slavers that terrorised the coastal areas and inland settlements and ended up in Ireland.
As a very old man he gave a statement which was written down and has survived, it started with what he could remember of his early years. He named his birthplace as Bannavem Taberniae whch has been assumed to be Banwen, (the nearby Roman settlement of Brecon had been known to the Romans as Bannium). He recalled his name before he had been enslaved was Maewyn Succat, this certainly sounds like a Celtic-Brithonic name with Romanised influence. His father was a Priest named Capurnius, (not necessarily a Christian Priest), and was probably Roman. I'm not sure I believe that the Banwen claim has merit, (lots of places claim to have been the birthplace of St. Patrick, several of them in Scotland).
On the whole Banwen is pretty wet, windy, boggy, wild & remote. If he had grown up in Banwen it wouldn't have been a huge shock for him to end up in Ireland which also sees more than its fair share of rain!
Banwen celebrates this, (probably totally invented), link annually with a ceremony at the St. Patricks memorial which sits at the side of the ancient Sarn Helen Roman Road.
He was certainly a very remarkable man but much more importantly he has provided a good reason to drink a gallon of Guinness once a year!
Chris

Re: HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY
Hello Chris...That was a great history of St. Patrick and there are lots of them...In our church on St. Patrick's morning, the priest who said Mas,s did a little digging around the Internet and had a great lecture on St. Patrick as well...Talking about Guiness..they along with several other beer companies pulled back their sponsorship towards the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York because the St. Patrick's committee would not allow the Gay Pride people, who were to march in it carry their Gay Pride banners...They told them...No Political Banners and then they refused to march...Oh well...Can't please everyone...Margaret..

Happy belated St Patrick's day.
Interesting history there Chris, thanks for that. Have heard a few different stories myself over the years. Vancouver celebrates this day with a big parade and pints of green beer. Guinness and stout are also big sellers on that day. Margaret I didn't know that Guinness had pulled their sponsorship from that parade. Vancouver is a very pro gay city and also celebrates one of the biggest gay pride parades in the World, with people coming from all over the world to attend. Just love it on this forum that people from different corners of the world can give us information that we perhaps would never hear about. Cheers, Sheila
P.S. Chris still no luck regarding Alex Higgins but still on the look out.

Re: HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY
Hi Gang,
Yes I had a great St Patricks day, went to 09.30 Mass then headed to the local Weatherspoons pub here in London [as they are the cheapest and I only have my weekly pension to live off of] , I drank a rake of pints of Guinness and the pub was crowded with us all wearing St Patrick's day hats
. That was interesting Chris about where St Patrick was born and yes some people say he was born in Scotland, you know folks I was sitting at a table in the Weatherspoons pub and a young lady about 25 years old came in sitting in a wheelchair with two other friends and they all physical handicaps [God love them] but were all wearing hats and having a great old craic with me. I said to the young lady do you mind If take your photo on my mobile [cell] phone and put it on face book and one of her friends said only if you don't use a flash as that could trigger an epeliptic fit, well the ground could have opened up and swallowed me and made me feel humbled , yes we had a great old laugh till I had drank enough of the black stuff and went home. Took me 3 days to feel right again yet when I was younger I could have drank all day and night [ maybe just as well I cant drink like that now cause I couldn't afford it ha ha ]. Speak to you later Peeps, take care and God Bless all.
Regards.
Danny

Re: HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY
Hi Danny
Glad you had a good St Patrick's day.
Sad about the young girl in the wheelchair, certainly makes you take stock of how lucky we are when we see others less fortunate. Take good care of yourself Danny and glad you recovered from your hangover.
Cheers, Sheila
