Smiths Crisps

Post by amelia »

First of all I would like to say hello to everyone as it has been a good while since I last posted I am still having good days and mostly bad days but life goes on people keep telling me so I hope I am back for a while anyway. I took cards, biscuits up to my sons work and thanked them for all turning out for his funeral and saw his desk where he sat, and when I left I felt a bit better so here's hoping.
Anyway what I was going to ask the "old timers" I was eating a packet of Walker crisps and it said that it used to be Smiths Crisps, was Smith s crisps not in the lane next to the Paragon picture house as I remember a crisp work there. Where have all the works gone to in Glasgow there are no tailoring factories now eve in the Gorbals there were knitwear and tailoring works. I think everything is being made either in Taiwan or these other foreign countries. Does anyone remember any of the works come on get the old brains working

Sorry about your loss sweetheart but keep your chin up Amelia, ...I remember a little crisp factory down one of the back lanes ,we used to go in and buy a penny's worth of crisps they were always warm and with plenty of salt and do you remember a bakers down the bottom of Nicholson st we would watch the man making the shells for the pies on the machine near the window . We can get scotch pies down here but their not the same , take care Amelia ...cheers Ann

There was one at the bottom of South Portland St before Norfolk St, that was in the 50s-60s Frank

HI Amelia...Here am ur back again... At last I figured out how to get a new password...duh :?: ...losing it some days. ;)

The thing I loved about a bag of Smith's crisps when we were wee wans...was that you just got a wee bag and it had a wee round poke of salt...The amount was controlled and you could salt it yourself if you wanted to or not.
Not like the mega bags you buy now and once you start on that bag, it is like a drug, you cannot put it down. That's why we all have pounds to shed. ha. ha.

Hope you are doing well and healing....
I will e:mail you and let you know what is happening here.
Love,
Margaret

Hi Margaret glad to see you back. I also remember that wee twisted bag of salt, funny how some things stick in your mind.
My sister brought me a photo of my eldest three on Thursday and there they were standing next to a wall that had all chalk marks on it. It must have been in Moffat street because I had another wee girl before I left to go up to Castlemilk and there they were the two boys eating a bag of Smiths crisps, I wonder if Walkers would give me any money for it

Amelia, you could give it a try....You know the old saying: Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Better than trying to win the lottery...ha. ha.
