Anecdote Last year while listening to NPR - National Public Radio (All Things Considered)- in California, where I live, I heard about a restaurant in Los Angeles called The Gorbals. The name of the restaurant was given by the chef, Ilan Hall, a winner of the Top Chef Reality TV Program here. Ilan said he named the restaurant after the place where his father grew up - the Gorbals. He said his mother is from Israel and he himself grew up on Long Island. He cooks a mix of Scottish, Mediterranean, Israeli Jewish food. Said his father loved chips and haggis._____________________________________________________

Anecdotes (I am working backwards)I see that there are a few emails about Getlin's, including one from Mart Getlin, that came on to the site around April and May 2011 so Shirley who was asking about the shop should look at the info from those dates.

Anecdote This is in response to Shirley's question on January 24 re Getlin's. My aunt, Agnes Whittaker, worked in Getlin's for a while (don't know how long). She worked there in the late 40's or very early 50's. It was a furniture shop and it was located near the railway bridge overcrossing on Cumberland Street just before Gorbals Street. I think it was owned by a Jewish couple. I vaguely remember the owner - average sized man, wore glasses, had thick hair, and a moustache. The colour of the shop does not stick in my mind as being red but it could have been. I lived in Thistle Street (1940-1962) and my aunt lived up the same close. Now I live near San Francisco, CA.

Anecdote I remember the Olympics in 1948. We saw them at the movies on Pathe Newsreels, television wasn't around yet. Me and my wee pals decided to stage our own Olympics, so on a saturday we all headed down from Caley road and Mathie to the wee graveyard on Rutherglen road. The graveyard had already been abandoned and was ideal for the job, paths tae run on, stones tae jump. Robert Hall was purported to have been buried there (Rab Ha' The Glesga Glutton) We had a great day, Jackie Barnes, John Bagin, the Taylor boys and a few others. A memorable event! The graveyard has since been turned into a rose garden but some of the old stones have been preserved and are positioned around the walls.

Anecdote Hi,my sister and i lived in a single-end with our parents Tommy &Jean Shannon at 333 Cumberland Street and then we moved to a room and kitchen but still with an outside toilet (which i have to say was absolutely spotless) at 365 Cumberland Street up the Torr Bar close. We lived here from 1942 until 1958/59 when we moved to Castlemilk. We were always at our grans house at 270 Florence Street. My name is Fran and my sister is Jean. Would love to hear from anyone who lived in the gorbals at this time.i remember the Allan,McGhee,Fleming,Quinn,Defelice,Chapman,Kavanagh,McElroy,Mullen and from Florence Street the Hay, Wilson,McGettrick,Campbell,Strang, Boyle. would like to hear from anyone who remembers us.

Anecdote My greatfrandfather Wolfe Solanski owned the Furrier shop 137 Eglinton st. glasgow, I was told that he produced some of the most beautiful fur coats, fur capes, fur hats etc. Apparently he had an excellent reputation as a furrier, was well respected and acquired many influential customers in Glasgow and the surrounding areas. Does anyone have one of his peices of furs. or knew of him. This site has given me alot of information on my Family tree. Thankyou everyone.

However us old people live from day to day some living alone and reading the gossip and news on here is something we all look forward to, the site has lost lots of old characters and friends which is heart breaking, I am sure other readers have contacted you? Anecdote Ten Quid, In the name of the wee man! Me make you cry! well sarcasism once again, it never really wins the day, civility does not cost tupence. Days gone by in another era when the Gorbals was a notority from John O Groats to Landsend, is in the past those days are gone for ever . I ran about Nicholson street with Jews, Tinkers, Proddies and Catholics, all the same to me ..all people with all different faces, we grew up together as kids to men, hard men,funny men,idealist,all sorts, always great friends to the end. So you see I find it difficult to critise or blemish any ones character, being through life in the Gorbals/Glasgow was a formidable education, it taught me well, no matter what life throws at you, dont blame others, make your own bed! So TQ how abouts that? Theres always bount to be people in disagreement even on here, buts thats fun, find a kind answer thats my motto, going to war with everyone makes you a loser gets you nowhere, loses your friendship w! ith all. Life they say is short, but its not that short that we cant find time to be happy, friendly, complimentry, funny thing is when you spread that around the amasing thing it works. God and our Lord Jesus is always there for all of us, I am sure by the sounds of things you write on here about your illnesses they have well and truly looked after you. lets have friendship ignore the squabbling as you put it, get yer feet up man!

Anecdote Hi there Gorbalites I see the site is well populated and going strong these days. Lang may yer lum reek! I see James Hawkins has been on the site-hi there your cousin here - well maybe once or twice removed as I don't know which Hawkins brother you are related to...My aunt Cathie Hawkins was my mother'S sister and one of the best. Great with weans when we were all young and took on what seemed like a whole tribe of weans at Easter and sometimes on Fair Saturday or Sunday on trips to Hogganfield Loch and Queens park. Seemed so exotic then and a long way from McNeil Street. A bottle of orange juice donated by Nancy Samson, a couple of pieces of bread and jam and if you were very lucky a paris bun from the Co-operative Shan shop in Ballater street. Happy days so uncomplicated and full of great belly laughs. Everyone had a great time- oh that we and the weans these days would be so easy pleased... Remember to keep your peerie spinning!
