"Boab's" Comics Swap Shop, Naburn Street.

Post by Jimbo »

Does anyone else remember exchanging Yankee comics in "Boab's" just down from the Pawn close at the corner of Hallside Street. Boab always sat behind the counter smoking a cheroot, and one never knew how many comics were under the counter because he only put up one pile at a time for you to go through.

Although I lived in Ayr I was always up visiting my Granny who lived at no. 87 and my cousin who was also at 87. It was the highlight of the visit to swap my comics across the road in Boab's.

Yes, I remember this too Jimbo. I lived in Hallside street and only had to walk down the road to the shop. I think you could buy scraps in there too for scrap books. Weren't those scraps the girls collected absolutely beautiful, the angels will always stick in my mind, the were glossy, colourful and sparkled. But do you remember boys used to collect scraps as well, firemen and action heroes etc. We kept them in one of Mum's reading books and used to swap them all of the time.

Great memories.

Just about every newspaper shop used to sell scraps, there was one on the other side of Naburn St. from Boab's on the corner of Caledonia Road (always smelled of Paraffin or Firelighters!), loads, too, on Caledonia Road and Crown street, funny how those Angels and their wings stick in your mind especially the large ones!

Those who lived in Hallside St. must remember the Dairy about halfway along, I can remember being given a jug by my Granny and told "Awa' ower tae the derry fur a hauf pint o' mulk". This was duly measured out of the large aluminium churn with a halfpint measure. This was, no doubt, raw unpasteurised milk straight from the farm, no Health and Safety or Hygiene regulations, but hey, we're still here, lol!

Hi Jimbo
Any idea if they still sell scraps...or is that too mild a hobby for the young ones now...funny thing is I found some here in Australia a couple of years ago...and of course I had to buy them...the kids thought I had lost it...but I still have the sheet of them...the wedding ones....ah the great old memories.

Cheers Jimbo
