Hi Sandra. This is from my parents James and Christina Philbin who knew your uncle Billums Taylor. They remember him as a great character and ask to be remembered to him. He used to go to parties at my great auntie Hannah's house (Collins nae Doran) together with his wife Ina who apparently was the most amazing singer. They remember her singing with the Back Court Parade in the Metropole Theatre. She was so tiny she had to stand on a box to reach the mike. They have so enjoyed this website which has brought back lots of wonderful memories - I can see this is going to cost me a fortune!! Best wishes, Maureen Philbin.

What a brilliant site! Born at 305 Caledonia Rd then moved to 273 Florence St in 1943, maiden name McDonald, 3 sisters - Jean, Mamie and Margaret who was May Queen in 1948. Remembered lots of things I had forgotten... the weighing machine, the sausage dyke, the briquette man. As soon as I read about the wee brush factory at Mathieson Street... I could smell it! The Deep Sea... do you remember the wee man who wrapped the fish suppers asking... vinegar on them? He said it to everybody and by the time my sister and I got served, we were laughing so much we could hardly ask for our fish suppers. The wehaveit dairy... th sign said... we have it, if we don't have it, we'll get it, if we can't get it, you've had it! And does anyone remember Sylvan soap that floated in the water? There's a brilliant book full of pictures on the Gorbals - The Gorbals, an illustrated History by Eric Eunson http://www.stenlake.co.uk. To Helen Wemyss, Australia... I have photos of the Basil Spence flats being demolished, from the first charge going off, to the heap of rubble and dust at the end. If you email your full address, I'd be happy to send you copies. Does anyone remember Kean's sweetie shop at the top of Hospital Street facing the weighing machine, penny vantis or a single woodbine and a match? This was my aunt's shop - would love to hear from anyone that can remember that far back.

A couple of months ago, I put in a request for the where abouts of Joe McLean. A good friend of mine who used to frequent the Clelland Bar in Hospital Street. I left for New Zealand in 1967. I have heard that Joe went to America, I have some lovely photographs taken in the Clelland Bar. I would really like someone to put me in touch with Joe if possible. He had a party in his house if I can remember right, it was in Peebles St off Bedford Street, Gorbals. When I put the message in before someone sent a photograph of the Clelland Bar to me, my computer broke down and I couldn't reply. If that person could contact me again I would be obliged. Moira

Does anyone remember Naburn Street swing park and a man that lived near there? All the kids called him rubberneck as he had a long neck and when we saw him we all ran away laughing and we were a bit scared also he he.. Does anyone also remember the Indian man's shop at the corner of Hospital St and Cumberland St called Cushies and round the corner in Cumberland St called Getlins that sold costume jewellery and fancy goods, those were the days!

I have been on Gorbals live for a number of months, and I keep hearing your mention the picture halls in the Gorbals. I suppose I am the only one who remembers 'The Wellington Palace' in Commercial Road otherwise known as the Bee's. I skelped my backside from there all the way to Crown St thinking I was Hoppalong Cassidy. Maybe I am a lot older than the people writing in, I go back to the jeely jaur on a Saturday with big Mr Murray watching you never skipped in. This man must have been 7 feet tall. A Gorbals boy thrue and thrue!
