Women with rollers in their hair, kept in place with a scarf and pushing their prams full of dirty washing to take to the steamie. Taking their rugs outside and beating the hell out of them with a stick. Hanging washing out to dry on a clothesline fixed up on the outside of the tenement window. Making big pots of stovies because it was cheap (and tasty). Whitening the edges of the doorsteps and stairs. When having a christening giving a biscuit with a coin inside to the first child you passed who was the same sex as the baby, for good luck. Nippy sweeties, dainties, crisps with little blue bags of salt, road tar going soft in the summer heat, bogeys made of old prams, going to watch weddings as a kid just so you could catch the pennies that were thrown. So many memories!

Hi, I'm looking for childhood friends of my mother, Mary Donnelly & her sister Catherine. Lived in Ballater Street in 1950's before moving to Castlemilk just before I was born (at Rottenrow! what a name eh!). Mary & Catherine attended St Lukes as did her mother, another Mary and sister Margaret, known as Matt and their younger sister Katherine who worked at Twomax's and lived in Lawmoor Street. Their family name was Black. My mother, Mary then went onto Holyrood and Catherine attended St Bonnie's. My mother's birthday is on 28th July and as a birthday present any news from her childhood would be a great present.

My aunt in Australia Margaret George (she married my Uncle Owen George of Ystrad Mynach, Wales), has asked me if I can find an old friend of hers that she lost touch with. I wis jist thinkin aboot the auld gorbals wi aw its characters during ra 80's. Did emby remembur the george flea pit, lennox's sweetie shop, the wee man that slet candy apples under the bridge, the turf and cleland bar, the shouts of cumbie ya bass, the lavvies at gorbals cross, the bedford, the plaza, peter the paperman at the bank close, St Lukes, bonnies... its a wee shame but is aw gone noo as if it wis wan big dream an we wur aw ghosts fae the past. The Gorbals may have gone bit it will never disappear in oor memories will it?

Does anyone remember a biscuit or chocolate bar called LUNCH? Possibly a maroon coloured wrapper. My husband is certain he ate one as a child, but I can't ever remember them. Many thanks for any information.
