Does any one remember the Pillans family who lived in Mathieson Steet?

Does anybody out there remember any Nicols from 1800 to 1930 called James Nicol who was a policeman in Glasgow? He had a daughter called Annie and a son named Duncan. Duncan Nicol who is my dads father who's name is George Nicol who was born 1933 in 12 Tarbet street and is trying to locate any living family still in glasgow!

Hello, can anyone tell me if they can remember a family by the name of Murray, there was Hughie, Robert, Carrie, Ellen and annie. Mother and fathers name was Robert and Caroline. Hughie met and married an english lady and later moved to Ardincraig road, Castlemilk, had 2 sons, Jimmy and Paul, fostered 3 girls. Robert married Vicky? and had 2 children, Carrie married George Finnie and had 5 children and lived in a 5 up in Croftfoot. Ellen lived in Rutherglen, had no children and Annie married Bill Nash and moved to Linwood where they both worked in the car factory? They were all from the Gorbals and Robert and Caroline ended up living in the high rises facing the graveyard. Isa

Today, 23rd March is the anniversary of the death of Joseph Hughes (George Cross) whose story can be read on the Gorbals People section of this website. Here is a poem I have written to honour this brave young soldier. JOSEPH HUGHES – G C (FOR A HERO WAS HE) Joseph Hughes gave his life for his Service Corps ‘Brothers’ His the ultimate price to save so many others. Just a lad from the Gorbals how proud we should be of that brave young soldier for a hero was he. His fear and his pain we can only surmise how he must have suffered in his sacrifice. With esteem his name spoken as it always will be by his comrades-in-arms of the RASC. In death then young Joseph his actions rewarded for his gallantry a George Cross awarded. His body lies cold far away, in the earth but let’s bring his soul home to the place of his birth. Each act of remembrance brings Joseph back home to the land of his fathers his spirit will come. So let’s always remember with a thought, or a prayer Joseph Hughes from the Gorbals and his courage so rare. © ELSA J BEATTIE

Hi all you gorbals folks! I was born at 16 Gorbals Street in 1937, went to Gorbals Primary, then to Adelphi Terrace, ultimately ended up in the RAF for quite a time. My pals were Jackie McPartland, David Winestone and Tommy Barrie. I have unfortunately only returned to my roots about 5 times in all these intervening years and the last visit about 8 years ago and found it very difficult to recognise my old haunts. One day soon I hope to return, I would be delighted to hear from anyone that may know me... george

My name is Robert Lindsay I stayed at 10 South Portland Street, (64-1969). The things I remember most.... Websters pub, (my granda worked there). The bagwash, Ian's newsagent on Oxford Street. The barraman who sold fruit and veg. Also I don't see anyone here who went to my school, Gorbals Primary in Buchan Street, the worst football team around, we were hammered every week by Hayfield, Blackfriars, Abbotsford and everybody else in the immediate vicinity. Names from those days include Willie Hunter, Keith Grant, John Klezyck, Pat ferris, Anne Nixon, Josephine Crozier, Ruth Mellis, Moushtaqe Mohammed. Regards to you all Rob

Hi, I was wondering if anybody remembers my mother, aunty or grandfather. My Grandfathers name was James Cryans and lived in the Gorbals. He would have been born in the 1920's - 1930's (not 100%). He then left to go to the Navy when he was about 20. He married and had 2 girls in Australia. They then all moved back to Glasgow where my mother (Merryn Cryans) and her sister (Leanne Cryans) attended a school on London Road in Parkhead (roughly 1969). Does anyone remember these people? Hi Folks I've become addicted to this site, I am reading the anecdotes over & over. I married and moved to Doncaster some 30 years ago I grieved like hell for my parents and family however, I settled after a few years but I continue to come home at least once a year. Since finding this site it has made me really homesick and I never thought that I would go back to those days but here I am grieving again its mad. Enough counselling for me I've asked b4 however I will ask again can anyone remember my wee ma's family from 160 Florence St my granda was known as gunboat smith, my wee maw was Nellie Smith they had a family of 7 Annie, Minnie, Andy, Rose, Robert, Ellen & Jimmy. My other grandparents also from Florence St were Patrick & Daisy Kavanagh whose four sons were called Pat, John, James & Michael. Any memories I would love to hear them. I am trying to find any living relatives of my Mum. She was born in 1911 in Holm Street Glasgow and was the youngest of Nine children. She has Altzheimers and still asks me to take her home to 46 Holdsworth Street. Her name is Williamina Norcup nee Mclaren. Her Mum was Mary and her Dad William, her Mums maiden name was McNeillage. My mum always said her Dad workd on the railways and her brother Peter Mclaren was gassed in the first world war and they brought him home but his lungs were perished at 24 years old he died. My Ma and her sister Jessie were Driver and clippie on the trams during the war and she met my Dad when he was stationed near Larges he was An english marine. I have no pictures of my grandad William Mclaren and wondered if any one could help me. Linda x

I was born at 121 Lawmoor st in April 1946 my family name is McCabe father Jim, Mother Mary, brother Laurie and myself Norma. I know my brother had a lot of wee mates as he is 5 years older than me, one of them was called Joe Tohill. The house used to belong to my grandmother Margaret Smith she lived there for many years, she liked the odd bet on the horses and used to have a safe house for the bookies runners, does anyone remember her?? or our family. cheers norma

As an ex Gorbalesian I thought it might be of interest to some of you to see how Glasgow looked in earlier times. So if you log on to Town Plans - Views 1580-1919 you`ll see how the Gorbals looked way back then. I was very surprised to see that there used to be a Railway Stn. at the top end of Main St.(later renamed Gorbals St.). I know exactly where it was, if anyone else can remember, It was that triangular piece of ground immediatley before the railway bridge. Does anyone remember the explosion that happened in the starch works in Surrey St? It was about 1940 or 41. Some people were killed but I can`t remember too much about it.
