Boxing Club

Post by cockatoo »

I have a vague recollection of a boxing club in Bedford lane behind the Gorbals St swimming pool, I think i went in and done one round(my first and last round) This would be late sixties early seventies, We (St Johns school team) used to meet there before we would head off to the pitches across from the Glasgow Green in Bridgeton , I remember one time we got beat 26-0 by St Francis's,never did like crossing the Clyde into Bridgeton !!!! Still dont. Does anyone remember this club ?

Hi, the boxing was in the upstairs section of the St John's Mens / Boys Guild in Bedford Lane / Row, in the late fifties/ early sixties a boy called Robert Liptschek fought and trained there, I had my first go in the ring with him got a punch in [ big bad mistake] one short round was enough, I am sure that he did well in his weight, I also played football with the primary school in the 50s and the Boys Guild Teams. Hi Cockatoo and Frank,
I remember the boxing club behind Gorbals street swimming pool but I must say I never went in to it, I had asked my Ma and she said no, although I used to go to Gorbals swimming pool and loved it and remember in the late 50's when I was learning to swim I would always stay down the shallow end. To my horror as I was walking to the shallow end I was pushed into the middle of the pool and was gulping for air when the attendant dived in and rescued me [what a bloomin fright!!]. I used to play football for wee Bonnies Cockatoo and we played every Saturday on the same football pitches too, our team was never that good but it was the honour and pride playing for your school team that made you feel great, I think it was Sacred Heart that was the best team in our group in those far off days. Ah well Frank and Cockatoo we never were to become £millionaires playing football but it was great just playing.
Regards.
Danny :)

Hi ,Cockatoo,Frank ,Danny

Never made the "Boxing Club", but when I moved from the Gorbals to a primary school called Bankhead
the first thing was as you were a new "kid " on the block and you had to get in the pecking order before
you were left alone.I was ok for the first three fights and then the 4th guy poked me in the eye and as
I could not see a thing after that I breathed a sigh of relief after that and I was left alone .The old
Gorbals survival instincts kicked in again . Was not Benny Lynch from the Gorbals.??

Best regards Reg :)
