I am interested in finding out information about my Great Uncle Andrew Provan and his wife Margaret, who lived at 100 Sandyfaulds Street in 1901. I believe he was a brass finisher. He was originally from Darnley, Eastwood.

My mothers maiden name was Docherty and mine was Orr. We lived on Crown St. In the sixties. My Granny was Jennie and my Granda's was James. My mothers name is Joan her sisters and brothers Margarita, Janice, Jim and John. My Great Granny (Grandma)also lived on the street in the red sandstone buildings.

I believe that the people from the Gorbals have the greatest sense of humour in the world. Living there was not always easy for the people I have mentioned above but we could always see the funny side of things I carry this with me always.

Gorbals 1940-1961.

Do you know, the Glackin, Kelly, Martin, and Lewis families. Hospital St. Clyde side end, numbers 29 to 47. The Kelly’s. My Gran Jean Kelly, mother Alice her sister Patsy and Brother William (Christie) lived at 29 Hospital St next to the Donlin’s Family.

Alice went to Gorbals primary 1946 to 1952 then Adelphi Terrace secondary. Her pal was Anne Bathgate also remember surnames, Woods, Quinn, Curren, Goughan, Donaughes, Gibson’s, Old Mrs McCauley and the McShane’s. The Lewis family, my Gran was Maggie and Pop was Abie who was a barber and had his shop in Ballater St across from Peters Fish & Chips. Their children Michael (my dad), Eddie, Yvonne and adopted Michelle. They lived at 47 Hospital St, neighbours were Curran, Woods, Britt’s and Carrols. Dads pal was Martin Docherty. Eddies Pals, Mcglaughlan, McGwiggins. The both went to St. Luke’s then to St. Johns. Their cousins were, Harry & Tucker Johnson. The other cousins were Margaret,! Jim and Tommy Martin also lived in Granny Glackens house at 64 Adelphi St.

Michael Lewis and Alice Kelly Married and are my parents. Moved to Australia in 1961. I have many old photos and some very rare movie film of Glasgow Green, Albert Bridge, Abbotsford Place, St Georges Square, and inside the tenement housing. This footage will be available soon. My Mother Alice Kelly is looking for Bobby and Alice Christie’s family last contacted in 1961

Do you know Daniel Allen? Could you ask him if he knows of a girl called Darryl from Morecambe (born 1967 to Vera). He had his own family in Scotland and I have never wanted to get in the way. I hope enough time has passed now. My mother did look after his sisters baby girl Tanya when I was four and I remember her with love. He is my long lost Pa and I would dearly love to see him again. I was born at 11 Gorbals Street. Moved to Sandyfaulds Street where I grew up. Went to St Francis primary. Stayed in the close next to Nisbits Dairy can still remember Mr Nisbit. We were at 92 almost facing Flo Hennigans shop next to the pen. In the close next to Nisbits were the Boyles and the Spencers amoung others. My Da's name was Frank Connolly and he hung around with our uncle Danny Mc Cauley (Stick Mc Cauley). They were a bit of a pair in their younger day but have been gone quite a while now. My mother's mother was Cathie Mc Cauley and she lived in Nicholson Street right facing the Bond as I remember the men and their horse and carts delivering the barrels there. I loved growing up in the Gorbals went to Holyrood got expelled and went to Bonnies where I met up again with Colin Mac and Commy, Jim Feeney, and the rest of the boys who came from St Lukes/St Francis. We got a new hose at Waddell Court but lost some of the joy there. Ah well such is life keep up the good work and keep sending those memories.

Colin Mcfarlane, John Mulligan, the Pillans, Danny Fullerton, sadly remember, the mcGrorys, Rab and Martin Shannon, St Lukes, the tiny Rebel Cumbie, the Toddler Cumbie, Jim Feeney, Peter Comiskey, wee Frankie fae Bonnies, big Scud, wee Bub, drinking in the Lizzie flat stairs, standing at Anns Fry or Marios chippy and always hoping that something better might happen. Fond memories of good and bad times done with good people around.

Passed through the Gorbals this week with hundreds of new flats being erected,I went into the showroom of one builder and asked how much they were. The women said for the first 28 days after completion they had to be held for "local people", i.e. people on the housing waiting list or first time buyers. I asked again the price and was told ...around £120,00 for a one bedroom flat, rising to more than £140,000 for two beds and "superior" de-lux flat for more than £175,000. I just wondered how many local people could afford such prices and it did strike me that the Gorbals is no longer associated with poverty but the rich middle classes, many of whom use the new Gorbals flats to rent out or as second homes. once there were old bogeys parked in the streets, now there are mercedes and porches, and as one old guy said to me in the Laurieston bar in Eglinton street,"Yi'd hiv tae be a millionaire tae live in the gorbals noo!" so if you want to go back and live in the area you'd better start doing the lottery now!

Hello Jean when I was born in 1947, lived with my Granny Maggie McNaughton and my mums name was Margaret she was only 17 yrs old when she had me. It was a big shame on the family but she kept me and my granny brought me up at 10 half Eglinton Lane until I was about 2-3 and we moved to Carentine 131 Myerside St with my granny. Maybe someone from your family might remember my mum & my gran, granny's husband died when he was very young man. Mum had 3 sisters names where Catharine (kitty), Rosann (Rosie).

Does anyone remember the concerts in St. Francis' League of the Cross Hall, Errol Street? A fellow named Frank McCabe, now deceased, used to sing at these concerts. They were just great and, for many, the first introduction to stage musicals shows besides the concerts in the parks.

Hi Alistair McLeish, I went to Camden St I do remember the showers and the nit nurse. My teachers name was Mrs Campbell she wore her hair in a bun and wore a cardi with a long black skirt I was the one who give her a hard time when she tried to give me the strap. I would have her running round in circles after me, I wasn't having none of it had to much of that at home! It's a great site, but it was not all good - what about the dads who would drink all the money and come home and beat up mum and batter the wains its not all rose tinted classes.

Hey!!! I remember "Diamonds dancing acadamy" from back in the 50s, though I didn't go to it myself. I remember the entrance was squeezed between the entrance to the stalls and circle of the "Palace" picture house. I recall that, wee Tim Riley and big Jim O"Hagan were regulars there, the were members of the gang called,"the Border" hung out at gorbals cross.

Anybody out there remember me. I was born at 224 Gorbals St, then moved to 64 Gorbals Cross. Mother May, Dad James, two sisters Marie and Lilian. I went to St Johns primary then on to St John's Tradeston St, then to our lady and St. Margarets. Friends were Patsy Folan, Annabel Henry and Maureen Haggerty. The Folans and the Haggertys lived in Portugal St and the Henry's in Eglinton St. Also Mick Daly from Gorbals St. Would love to hear from you.

For JEAN GRANTHAM, Sorry Jean Portugal street was swallowed up by the multistory flats back in the eary sixties. I went St Johns primary, way back in the forties, and I lived round the corner in Warwick street, (Nicholson street). I watched the old place being torn down, I left there in 1965. Regards Owen.

Great site, I'm surprised nobody ever mentions Diamond's dancing academy in Gorbals St, very popular among the 'young yins" in the 'olden days". Old Joe Diamond ruled with a rod of iron, turned out a lot of good dancers.

Duke Boyle, a leader of a gang in Stalag VIIIB during WWII is recalled vividly by a group of Australian and New Zealand fellow POWs. I am currently writing about their experiences in the camps and Duke Boyle's name keeps cropping up. Is he known to anyone?

I was born in Glasgow and lived at 317 Thisle St opposite John B Hinds, I do remember the circus in our street it was Billy Smarts Circus. I would also like to say hello to Joan and Chris Devlin who lived across the street and say sorry for everytime we kicked the ball against there door and swung on the lampost outside your window. I also remember the shops Greasie Wullies, Armours Dairy, Mary Langs, Lizzie Bailies the bookies in the backyard next to the Buggie Lawn Mrs Keans the Gushet. I will just leave you all with some memories of the true Gorbals what an education we had.
