Shawfield park
Re: Shawfield park
Remember going dancing at Shawfield on a Saturday night. A lot of people from Oatlands, Rutherglen and Castlemilk went to it. They had a nice wee lounge bar in it where my pals and I would go for a couple of drinks before the dancing. The bands they used to bring in were really good. I've got fond memories of Shawfield dancing. My wee Dad also used to help train the greyhound dugs that raced there. Cheers, Sheila
Re: Shawfield park
Hi, Frank & everyone,
Shawfield Stadium now my best pal Alex was a CLYDE fan but he was the only one that I knew .
I seem to remember his favourite player was a Harry Hood and I think that he was a very good winger and at the same time I think Rangers had Willie Henderson and Celtic had Jimmy Johnstone.
Never actually saw him play but my memories of the Stadium are more to do with a Friday night
Greyhound Racing . My older brother would also go and the thing that sticks out is when they both came
home my father would always put all the forecasts tickets on top of the sideboard and I was very quick
at maths I would count up and these tickets and there value were like a"Spreadsheet of the evenings
ups and downs but usually in the final analysis he had the bookies money for a little while but in the end the hard luck story was always about "if only". !!
.!! I did go Dog Racing When i lived in London ,Wembley on a
Friday night and White City on an occasional Saturday. But I had to give it a try.!!Treated like a night out it was quite enjoyable . Never really came away winning but that was along time ago and we
all get older and wiser.
By the way Frank you mentioned on another post about working alongside "Tom Tiny Wharton"
What a character you must have loads of stories to share about him.??
Take care and best regards Reg

I dont want tae put you on the spot but there was always talk of giving the "Greyhounds
extra PIES and especially if it was a hot favourite .
Did you ever hear of any of this "Hanky -Panky"
Dont want to put you on the spot so if it is controversial

Re: Shawfield park
Hi Reg+gang,
Yes Shawfield stadium [park] where a lot of people lost a lot of Money on a Friday night [was there a Tue/Wen night too ?] you might have backed one or two winners if you were lucky that night but overall the [tote ?] was the winner. Lots of people rather than go to Shawfield on a Friday would put a bet on in the bookies and waited till Sat morning for the results. You mentioned to Frank about "Tiny Tom Wharton" the football referee Reg yes he was a big man and I remember when I was an apprentice bricklayer in the 1960's we were working on a Church and while having our tea - break he "Tiny" came into our wee hut and asked to see the site agent, he was working for the steel company [rep] and I felt like asking him for his autograph but all the other brickies jeered me so I never bothered. Also Reg Clyde FC were a good wee football team with Tommy Ring, Harry Haddock and the goalkeeper Tommy Mc Culloch all star players in the early/mid 60's with Harry Hood playing a wee bit later [late/ 60's early 70's ?].

Re: Shawfield park
Hi Reg
Re the hanky panky with the greyhound dogs and doping. It was quite common apparently. Not sure about it being pies but they all had their different methods. My Dad fell out with one of the owners because he wanted my Dad to give the favourite something. My dad point blank refused and told him what to do with his job, and then he went on to work for someone else. This was only a part time thing for my Dad and he only did it because he enjoyed the greyhound breed so much. He had several greyhounds himself over the years and used to ride from Oatlands to his house on Caley road with one of the Greyhounds in the sidecar of his motorbike. One of my Aunts made the wee dug a hat like a pilots leather bomber cap. We were the talk of the steamie for that one.
As well as train them he played them as well, like most people the money usually remained at Shawfield. Cheers, Sheila

Re: Shawfield park
Hi Gang,
I'm trying to remember but on Friday night at the "dugs" at Shawfield am I correct in saying that you could buy a beer inside the stadium and stand and watch your greyhound race round the track while drinking it ? and was there a bookie there where you could place your bet or was all the betting done at the "tote" window. Can anyone remember when a football match was being played between Clyde and ? and the small 3 feet high seperating wall collapsed, I know a few people were injured, there was such a big crowd there that day that the pressure of the crowd made part of the wall collapse. This happened in the mid/ late 50's or maybe very early 60's ? anyone help here please.
Regards.
Danny

Re: Shawfield park
Hi Sheila,
Many thanks for your interesting comments regarding above subject. I think I suspected
that all was not as it seemed but good on your Dad for taking a stand.!!
On the subject of dogs I have been watching a good TV programme called for the love of dogs with
Paul O'Grady and very interesting .What I dont get is how some owners mistreat their dogs.!!
Also sadly while I live in France at the moment I am afraid that roundabout holiday season
July August a lot of the locals just seem to dump there dogs in the middle of nowwhere and the
Ex- Pats seem to rescue a lot of them . They a web site called NALA something but I think they are
fighting a loosing battle. I meant to ask is Greyhound racing still going on at Shawfield and I seem to remember Carntyne?
Take care Best Regards Reg

Re: Shawfield park
Greyhound racing is still on the go at Shawfield on a Friday and Saturday night. William King the bookie is now the owner of Shawfield, his daughter Melanie is running the place, my sister works there and has been there 30yrs.
