Shawfield park

Post by DannyGill »

Hi everyone,
Can anyone remember Shawfield park where Clyde FC used to play ?, being a Celtic supporter I would walk to Parkhead for Celtic's home matches [getting a lift over when I was a wean]but when Celtic played away matches I would sometimes go and watch the "Bully Wee" play. I think there was a disaster there in the 1950's when the wall sepperating the fans from the pitch collapsed, I remember some people were injured but was anyone killed ?. Also I think if my memory serves me correctly that in the late 1960's or was it early 1970's Clyde were 3 rd top of the old division one, Celtic and Rangers both qualified for European competitions but because Clyde was also a Glasgow club they were denied entry ? so Clyde said because Shawfield was on the border of Glasgow/Rutherglen they asked for permission to be allowed entry as a Rutherglen club, does anyone remember this ?. Also it was on Friday night's that the greyhounds ran at Shawfield too, is Shawfield park still standing/used as Clyde football club moved away ?. I think Tommy Ring, Harry Haddock , were great Clyde players and the goalkeeper was Tommy McCulloch ?. Anyone remember.

Hey Danny, yes Shawfield is still standing and still in use. My sister works in the tote office there and has done for over 20 years, it is only open these days on Friday and Saturday nights due to low demand. They built a swanky new bar that you could go into without entering the stadium itself, but its not that busy either. There are usually more staff than punters these days. Unfortunately I don't know much about the football side of things, a bit before my time.

Hi Josie , thanks for the info, so it's still standing then !!, I remember great crowds going there on a Friday night. Or if you put a line on for the "dugs" then Sat morning getting the Daily Record to see what numbers had won. I remember the 101 trolly bus used to take you there along Rutherglen Rd but the Rutherglen Rd has been diverted now. Speak later Josie take care and God Bless.

Danny :)

I used to walk past Shawfield stadium..over the bridge and into Bridgeton where I worked in Lairds making up cardboard boxes for whisky. I also remember going to the dancing at Shawfield but wouldn't know if they still hold dances there anymore...does anyone know?

They don't hold dances in Shawfield anymore and haven't for as long as i can remember. They do have a club bar where they can hold functions etc. They have a restaurant as well which can be hired out as well. There was one night at the end of last year that there was a function held there and the rest of Shawfield was shut, no racing or anything. Just restaurant and bar staff were on.
