Does anyone have any information about Patterson's Fish shops in Glasgow? Andrew Patterson, who owned the shops, was my maternal grandfather and we are trying to find information on him.

Does anyone have any information about Peggy McMenemy who lived at 47 Crown Street in the 1930s? She left for Canada after marrying a Canadian sailor. She was a good friend of my mum's, May Davey.

There was an old request re Pillans from Mathieson Street. I lived around the corner, on Caledonia Road from a Ned Pullins on Mathieson Street. He was also in my class at The St Francis annex, which was the top floor of Hayfield street school. 1948/49. Could be the same family?

I have just found some corrections, to amend my previous message! Since obtaining my fathers birth certificate from one of my msn messenger contacts. My father James Liddell was born on the 17th May 1940 at 100 Sandyfaulds Street. His father was John Liddell a Tailors Presser. His mother was Susan Liddell (nee Gilligan) born on the 12th October 1923. PLEASE, can anyone HELP ME locate my fathers family that I have never seen before?

My Granny, Mary McGuire, lived for a short time in Sandyfaulds Pend at the start of the war. A free standing house with a huge garage. It must have been an old Car-hire, or a Funeral Undertakers originally. It was across the pend from Walter Boyce's coal rea. Does anyone know anything about the pend buildings? Have photos? Incidently my Granny ran minoges and was a friend of Alice Cullen's.

Today, 23rd March is the anniversary of the death of Joseph Hughes (George Cross) whose story can be read on the Gorbals People section of this website. Here is a poem I have written to honour this brave young soldier. JOSEPH HUGHES – G C (FOR A HERO WAS HE) Joseph Hughes gave his life for his Service Corps ‘Brothers’ His the ultimate price to save so many others. Just a lad from the Gorbals how proud we should be of that brave young soldier for a hero was he. His fear and his pain we can only surmise how he must have suffered in his sacrifice. With esteem his name spoken as it always will be by his comrades-in-arms of the RASC. In death then young Joseph his actions rewarded for his gallantry a George Cross awarded. His body lies cold far away, in the earth but let’s bring his soul home to the place of his birth. Each act of remembrance brings Joseph back home to the land of his fathers his spirit will come. So let’s always remember with a thought, or a prayer Joseph Hughes from the Gorbals and his courage so rare. © ELSA J BEATTIE

I'm trying to get some information about my Grandfather, who emigrated to America in the mid 1920's. His name was Gavin Whitton Flint. We know that he lost contact with his family in Glasgow, (Gorbals) after about two years, and was never heard of again! He may have moved on to Canada, where his sister Elizabeth had emigrated to, but we have no other information. Can anyone help?

I see that James Stokes VC has been honored by the people of the GORBALS, long over due I had the great honor to know him, his sister Nellie Stokes Ford was at Buckingham with the family when they received the VC from King George VI we were there to meet Nellie when she came back from London she lived up the same close as us 62 Lawmoor Street, I understand a movie is going to be made of his life story.

My family stayed in the top flat at 3 Ballater Street, I had four sisters and three brothers, I was the oldest and went into the army from 1947 to 1950. I remember the McDonough family vaguely, alas the gorbals as we knew it is no more. Great memories though!!

I was born in Orchard St in the Oatlands, Mother's name was Maggie Burns, died when she was 29. Dad remarried moved to 3 Ballater St at the Gorbals X, above McKellar's pub. Went to St John's school round about 1946 then on to Holyrood Annexe 1952 to 1956. Used to go in to the Kiosk cafe round about 1955, then also went in to Hell's Kitchen cafe, the guy that owned was called Bill, he and his sister Margaret? ran the cafe. He used to give me money on a Friday to buy records for the juke box. Lots of good memories from the Gorbals, wonder if any of my old friends are still about?

F.A.O. Isabella Henriques, I remember all the shops you spoke about, it was my job to go up to the fish shop on a Friday night to get our supper. Mary Pirries was like an Alladins cave to us all with all the sweets. The old church on Cavendish Street and Pollokshaws road still stands where it was years ago it is now made into a homeless unit. Abbotsford Place school has been boarded up for years but I see that there was a sign up in it for office lets when I went past on the bus. It is a listed building and cannot be demolished. They have just finished building brand new houses just accross the road from where Mary Pirries was, I think there was only one close in that building if I can remember as I born and stayed just around the corner in Salisbury Street up until 1956 when I was married from there. Do you remember George who had a dairy there and also the dairy in Cumberland St. called McIndoes were they sold the milk straight from the metal urns?
