To Ten Quid...The club was the Oxford. It was owned by Tommy Gilmour Sr. It also had a betting shop before they were legal. It was run by Bobby Hamilton who I'm sure Charlie Endell in Budgie was based on. On a sunday Bobby would open the boxing club for "square goes" to settle disputes and avoid gang battles. He was a great guy.

I lived with my parents and sister Stella, and my 2 uncles Joe and Sammy at 10 Abbotsford Place since I was a wean, until 1955 when we moved to East Kilbride. I'm 65 now and live in Toronto, Canada, but always love comin' back to visit Glasgow and the rest of Scotland. My wife's Canadian, and she loves coming to Scotland too. Does anyone have pictures of Abbotsford Place, particularly No. 10 and thereabouts, from around the 50s to before the area was demolished ? When we lived there, it had quite a Jewish community. I remember musician Harry Margolis live across the road from us, and I remember Geneens Jewish restaurant on Abbotsford Place, though I was never in it. Our family used to go to South Portland St. Synagogue. All long gone, so the only memories are through photos. Did anyone have home movies of the Gorbals during it's heyday ? I remember, as a kid, the walk from oor hoose to Abbotsford School. It's all such wonderful nostalgia. Feel free, anyone, to contact me offline if you wish.

Another long-shot, just wondered if anyone had info on my dad's family who lived as a family in the Gorbals up to WW2 and beyond before marrying and dispersing like so many others to new towns and the like. There were Charlie and Catherine Croft and their kids were Cathy, Willie, Agnes, Margaret and Charlie. Sadly they are all passed away now. My dad used to tell good stories of the gorbals and he had a huge affection for the place. I don't think he ever really moved out of Glasgow in his heart! the last place i remember visiting was my gran's in butterbiggins road. Thank and even if nobody remembers anything (it was an awfy long time ago) good luck. ps this part of the site is so big but so interesting it could do with some sort of search facility but the site is good

I see that James Stokes VC is to be honoured this week in London by the Prince of Wales in London, it is now 60 years (1945) when James was awarded the VC for services above the call of duty. I went to see the memorial in his honour at the Rose Garden on Rutherglen Road. I see his nephew John Ford and his family will be in London for the service, John and his sister Mary lived up the same close as us at 62 Lawmoor Street, James Stokes will never be forgotten by all those wonderful people in the Gorbals who knew him, if you are visiting Glasgow pay a visit to James's memorial at the Rose Garden on Rutherglen Road in the Gorbals. Yours sincerely Thomas Kelly Donnelly
