Hi,I left the Gorbals when I was 5 to live in Pollok. My parents lived in Gorbals St. Mary and Robert McDougall. My grandparents also lived there, Christina and John McDougall and Mary and Robert Lipsett. My dad lived in 13 Crown St. Although I left when I was 5, I still think about the Gorbals a lot. I did my family tree recently and while one side of the family was from the Gorbals going back many years, on the other side, I was surprised to find that I come from 4 generations of shepherds from Fife. To John Coyle. I lived three strairs up at 273 Florence St. through the wall from your Mammy. I have three sisters, Jean, Mamie and Margaret. Margaret was May Queen at St Francis. Your uncle John was senior altar boy and she has photo of the May procession with him in it. I was pals with your Uncle Alex and another boy callled Francis Carney. When we went to the pictures, if it was a cowboy film, the boys would batter their bums all the way home kidding on they were riding horses. I remember we saw a film about Mexicans and the two of them changed their names to Aleeco Meechano and Franseco Carneo. They couldn't do much with McDonald so they just called me Senorita Anna! I was always a' done up gaun tae chapel wearing big hats and all the latest fashions. I met your auntie Barbara years after and she said they all used to rush to the windie on a Sunday morning to see what I was wearing.Please let me know about all the family and give them my best wishes.

FAO Owen Dougan you've got my sister mixed up with another girl in the whiskey bond I think her name was Annie Taylor and she married a guy who was a gaffer in it. My sister was a goodlooker tall with jet black hair, she palied about with Mary Ward if you can remember her from near Herbertson St. Did you stay up 14 Salisbury St. as we stayed up 27 then moved to a room and kitchen up 15. I was born in 27 Salisbury St. in 1935 and I cannot remember you, remember a lot of people from there i.e. George Hughes who is dead now,Johnny Grant who lived up 16 the Sullivans, Scotlands from 20/22, Friels as well, Sammy Bradley from 33, Billy Kinghorn and a lot of others that I remember.

FAO Gorbals/Jim1 First of all John Burke was married to my sister not the same guy you were speaking about and I always thought sandshoe Wullie was a figment of imagination I remember my mother coming away with that crack.The poor soul Wullie that you were talking about was called Wullie Mullholland and he lived in either 65/67 Commercial Road, the poor soul used to lift all the debris from my grannies back which was 63 Commercial Rd and then throw it over into the next back, some of the weans were very cruel to him calling him names and you were right about his mother she looked after him I think until Commercial Rd. got pulled down, never found out what happened to him.

I remember the Fergusons, they lived in the same close as me and the Bradys lived in the one next to us. They both lived low down. I beleive the Fergusons moved to Castlemilk, I don't know where Matt Bradys family moved to.

Hid a gid sing song wi the drunks u didny need ti no the words jist sung anything ti witever tune wis being sung I still do it for ma granweans they think its great. Remember the time then black ice at the round about awe us guys hid ti try n push the bus up the hill ti Carmunock it jist turned aroon n slid back doon the hill wi us awe singing ye canny push yer granny aff the bus. Sandshoe wullie wis a poor head injured person who wis looked after by his mum he lived around rutherglen rd. He was a harmless guy who roamed the streets picking up cigarette buts and dud matches. His hair was always shaved short no doubt to keep lice off him, he was slim n tall with a stoop and his white sandshoes were his trade mark. I seen him at least once a week scuffing around near the graveyard in rutherglen rd down by the bees pictures, the poor guy never harmed a sole and his mum did a wonderful job sorry if i come across a bit shity, but i do get upset when people hiv a go at the unfortunate he was as notoriouse as oor wullie in the beeno gorbalsjim.

Amelia McKinlay, I remember Annie Welch and john burke well, they were just winching when I worked in the bond, Annie worked at the bottling/stamping/wrapping tables, and John was our gaffer, the men stacked and stored the cases of whisky. I Remember Annie was a tall blond haired lassie, I think she and John would be in their early twentys at the time, 1953 I was just 18. living in Salsbury street. Do you remember the troop trains that would stop at the bridge crossing cumberland street and the yanky soldiers would throw down gum, sweets and cigs? All us kids would be running all over the place to get our share.

My name is John Coyne. I was born at 167 Caledonia road accross from the welcome inn, in February 1957. We moved to Queen Elizabeth sq around 1966 where i lived until i got married in 1981. I attended St Francis and Holyrood. My wife Linda (Smith) is also from the Gorbals. She was born in 1959 and lived in Thistle St before moving to Hutchie court. She went to Camden St and then Adelphie. I have a sister Patricia who is 50, and two brothers, Brian who is 46 and Gerry, who is 44. I have always known my Mothers family where from the Gorbals, her maiden name is Meechan. John, Joe (the Meek) Hughie, Lawrence (Lawrie) and Alex. Theresa, Mary Barbara and my Mother Agnes. My Grandmother was also born in the Gorbals in 1902. Her people had came over from Ireland to the Gorbals in the late 1800's. Her maiden name was Rielly (Mary Anne). What I didn't know until fairly recently was, that my Great Grandparents on my Dad's side came from Ireland to the Gorbals as well. They moved in to Portugal lane in 1878 or there abouts. My Dad gave me birth certificates and marriage lines from my great Grand parents and my Grand parents just a couple of months ago. So all these years that I thought the Coyne family where originally from the Gallowgate, they actually come from the Gorbals. I am absolutely chuffed about that. That means I am 100% Gorbals through and through. I still see some of my old friends from school and St Francis boys guild but if anyone out there remembers me or any of my family, it would be great to hear from you.

Ricky Moore was mistaken, the notorious "Sandshoe Sanny" was the demon of the gorbals, with dirty raincoat and less than white sannies, plying his trade as a bag snatcher......I wonder if he is still on Interpol's list as he was never caught as far as I recollect. All Bookie's runners were suspect.

I see you mentioned Scobie Sloan in one of your postings he drank with my brother-in-law John Burke who came from Waddell Street. John went to Holyrood school then got a change to Bonnies. I have started to research my family tree. My grandmother was born and brought up in Glasgow Gorbals. Her name was Margaret Gallagher and she was born in 1932. She had a sister Mary who died when she was 10 and a brother Joey who died when he was 6. She also had brothers Joe, Neilly and Mick who were all older than her and a brother Chick and Jackie who were younger than her. I think they lived around the Cumberland Street area. She also had a cousin who was Bridie Ferry (possibly became McCann) a cousin Nora Ferry who married Patrick Crerand and a cousin James Ferry. Their mother was Hannah Ferry nee McGee. Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

Who remembers the bomb shelters in the cellars of Grants whisky bond and the co-op,in Gorbals Street, they had rows of bunk beds in them and what about the shelters in the back courts up the middle of Nicholson Street. The only people who used them were us kids playing all sorts of games in them.

Hi Johnny Houghton, Terry Kerr must hiv died young 56 maby a wonder if he had cancer as many of the x gorbals guys iv traced hiv died with that or like myself had to battle the disease no wonder! When i left in 64 the buildings were black i thot that was the color then i found out after the sand blasting most buildings were red sandstone now i know why i was rotten inside but you know i still think living there was a great experience and made me a stronger person even with all its fualts.

Today, 23rd March is the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Hughes (George Cross) whose story can be read on the Gorbals People section of this website. Here is a poem I have written to honour this brave young soldier. JOSEPH HUGHES – George Cross (FOR A HERO WAS HE) Joseph Hughes gave his life for his Service Corps ‘Brothers’, His the ultimate price to save so many others. Just a lad from the Gorbals, how proud we should be of that brave young soldier for a hero was he. His fear and his pain we can only surmise, how he must have suffered in his sacrifice. With esteem his name spoken as it always will be, by his comrades-in-arms of the RASC. In death then young Joseph his actions rewarded, for his gallantry a George Cross awarded. His body lies cold far away, in the earth, but let’s bring his soul home to the place of his birth. Each act of remembrance brings Joseph back home, to the land of his fathers his spirit will come. To Owen Duggan, I remember the pen on Surrey St. There was a guy named Oogie Mooney I think he married Kathleen Gerrity who lived up my Granny's close 50 Surrey St. I also remember going to Gorbals Cross for the newspaper at eleven clock at night for my Da, he worked in Grant's Whiskey Bond in the 50s his name was Jack Donovan, he was quite the tearaway, a wee blond man. My father was the son of Helen Brodie McKAY of the D.C. McKAY family who had a bakery at 294 South York Street, later to become Moffat Street. I would welcome any anecdotes about the bakery, family or the street, especially 292 Moffat Street where I believe the family had a house up the close there. I have previously submitted to this site a while back. At the time I asked if anyone had any pictures showing #10 Abbotsford Place, where I was brought (brung) up as kid. Some have suggested I look in the Mitchell Library file, which I have done, and they have many pictures of Abbotsbord St, but none showing #10. We were between Bedford Street, and Geneen's Kosher restaurant. Any help would be greatly appreciated. There's a Tennants Lager in it for you ! FAO. Agnes Kerr, I remember Frank Holsides sweety shop well, that's where I used to spend my sweety coupons during and after WW11. It was right next to the close at 20 Bedford Street, and I queued up for 5 Woodbine for my big sister, when the cigarete ration came in. Do you remember Maggie Donnely, who lived up your close and a chap that worked in Frank Borlands butchers across the road and the old woman that had a second hand shop just along from Holsides.

FAO Harry Davidson. My Dad was the boss in Kilbirnie St cleansing from early 60's to 83. He was Inspector William Kerr. Everyone said he was a Big B but he was fair with his boys when they needed personal help. Anyway I thought he was wonderful. He passed away in 2003.

I worked in the southern depot of the City Cleansing Dep’t in Kilbirnie St covering part of the Gorbals and Hutcheston and Oatlands in 1964-66. I have many good memories of the people there and of some of the rouges. Does any one else have any memories of that great institution that toiled to keep the refuse moving. This was a never ending task given the primitive sanitation and the tenement owners and their factors intransigence in moving into the 20th century.

RIP Geordie McCann, Geordie was a plumber and lived in Lawmoor Street. He still lived in the Gorbals until he died last month, many a good time we all had together in Annies the "Tallies" in Rutherglen road between Lawmoor and Mathieson St. Geordie was in the H.L.I. around the fifties. I remember his apprentice was a boy called Boyle who lived in Sandyfaulds St. George was only 71 when he passed away may he rest in peace.

Does anyone remember Frank Holsides sweet shop in Bedford St there was one in Gorbals Street. I went to Abbotsford school from 1953 to 1960 I cant remember any names from then but I do remember the strap ooh/ I was brought up at 20b Bedford Street till 1961 when I moved to Toryglen. I got married in 1969 and moved back to the Gorbals to 16 Devon Street. I moved to Castlemilk in 1972, but I will never forget growing up in the GREAT GORBALS. F.A.O. Pat Lynch, if you mean Lenas at Gorbals Cross, I knew it well, do you remember the Elder family, who sold the papers at Gorbals Cross, their son Sammy was a mate of mine. We both worked in "Grants Whisky Bond" 1953/4. I also sold the Times, News & Citizen around that area, for the Elders. OH, it was Lenas that I bought the button hole flowers for my wedding.

Gorbals Jim worked with Terry Kerr for years sadley to say he passed away about 9 years ago. I went to the Cooper and Wilsons the same time as Terry and yourself.
