Hi everybody. I am trying to find information for my husbands family tree. His mother lived at 4 Surrey Street back in 1943. Her name was Isabella Lawson. She would have had five children by then and her husband John Lawson was killed in June 1943 when he was a sapper in the Royal Engineers. Does anybody remember her or her children? I think her mother Jeannie McCartney was living in Warwick Street at the time. Any information would be gratefully received! Many thanks

ST LUKE'S SCHOOL - Does anyone remember Mr McGuire headmaster and his famous choir I remember going to St Andrew's hall to compete to see who had the best choir in the City of Glasgow. Also some of the old teachers: Miss McCarran, Miss Foley, Miss Scholler, Mr Berry and many more also the janitor Mr Cole. Mr Berry play the organ at the children mass 10AM on Sunday. Looking for anything/anybody that remembers or has connections with the WELSH family of 26 Cambden Street, 39 Glenacre Quad or 28 Glenacre Drive, Castlemilk. Rose HALLIGAN and WILLIAM WELSH married Oct 1942 in the district of the Gorbals. Boys William (Billy), Patrick (Pat), John and Andrew (Drew). Big Bill worked Upper Clyde ship builders. Was a cork burner/elec welder on the HARLAND WOLF. Rose was waitress- silver service, I think she worked at the Glen Hotel - Rutherglen and also on the Royal Boat at the Highland Games in 57ish, Won pools mid 1960's had a fire Xmas eve and lost the lot!!! I think that was Glenacre Drive. William had brothers Jimmy, Charles (Chick) and I think Joe. Rosie had a sister Margaret who married John Doyle and had a girl May. Hope somebody remembers something.

Would love to hear from anyone who knew my family who lived in the Gorbals until 1956. We lived at the bottom of Hospital Street (no.5?). My great-grandmother was Joan Breslin, Mmy gran Sarah Edith Battiston, my parents Ronnie and Prim Kane and me Joan Born in 1950. I went to Buchan St School. We moved to Castlemilk in 1956, to 3 Ballantae terrace. I went to Tormusk Primary and then Strathbungo. We moved to East Kilbride in 1969. Would love to hear from anyone who knew any of us. I've lived for the past 30 years in Spain but visit regularly.

My father lived in the Hutchiesontown area of Glasgow for the first few years of his life. He was born 1915, Robert Rowat Chester. He married my Mother in London before war broke out and by the time war ended they were divorced. I was just about 3 yrs. Since then I have a kind of picture of his life. My Da's mother Elizabeth Rowat Chester, died in childbirth two years after my Da was born and he was raised, I think by a half sister from his father's first marriage Elizabeth Moore ms Chester. His father was married 3 times and my Da was the last of his father's children to survive. I am wondering if any one can help fill in some blanks of how life was circa 1915 when a child's mother had died when he was two and his father was probably disabled from arthritis and bronchitis. I'm not sure I have asked the right questions, but maybe someone might know to what I am referring.

Charley Broon did u work in the iron works it was a real hard place too i was 1 of 4 app. fitters in the early to late 50s. Thats were i learned the daily record had a lot of uses u could read it rap yer peice up in it cut it up in squares for toilet paper but the best one was for us young guns at the time was to crush it in a ball take it to the loo's that were just a row of 12 small boxes with half doors n partisions a long plank with holes were you placed your bottom n wheesh the jobby floated away in the water that ran slowly down a pipe towards the clyde. We would go to the 1st loo the highest one nobody in we placed the lited paper gently in the water n off it slowly floated the yells of "bas."n "ill get ye ya wee bas."the guy who said "ooh that was nice"- how did they explain to the wifes about their burnt erses i would liked to have been a fly in some o they houses ache it was all good fun aye it was falling afart in more ways than one!

Hi, Just came across this site as I was browsing the net, I was brought up in the Gorbals Glasgow, Thistle street. I lived with my Granny and Granddad at the top of a tenement building. My Granddad's name was William Fairly and my Gran was a McCormick. My uncle Tommy Fairly live at the corner of Thistle street opposite the wee shop. I can remember the fruit machine in the corner and it cost sixpence to play it, The pub was next door and I was sent to get old red headed Granddad home for his tea, he would give me sixpence and told me to go play on the fruit machine for a while. I lived there for about 5 years in the early 50s. Granny used to throw me jam pieces out the window and usually there were about ten pairs of hands ready to catch it as it plummeted to earth. My uncles Bill and Tommy Farley then moved Billy went to Springburn and Tommy went to a place called Castlemilk, Mary Fairley went to Ruchhazzie, uncle jim went off to Australia, Aunty Mima went to Folkestone, and Jenny went off to Fort William. Does anyone remember the bakery round the corner from the Havana Bar? I think it was called Imries and they had great iced teabread and coffee buns. Mrs Kean of 212 Thistle st used to make aprons out of the flour sacks for the baker.

Was the Dixon's Blazes pub the old "HI HI" in Crown St? It was probably the nearest pub to Dixon's, I worked in both, Dixon's in the early 'Fifties and the "HI HI" in the late Fifties. some wild nights in the pub!

I am trying to trace some of my family history from the gorbals - my mum isabell had brothers billy and james, and a sister called sadie, all from the yuill family. My grans name was Mary and my grandpa was william (billy). My grandpa was a lorry driver and also worked in a mortuary, he was also part of the orange lodge. They lived in the gorbals for a long time, actually in the next close from jimmy boyle, and then i think they moved to castlemilk. Does anyone remember any of them, would appreciate any info at all.

My granddad was called Archibald McArthur and he was born in 1916 at 16 Keydon Street. He had a sister called Sadie (I think her married name was Pattison) and his parents were called Archibald McArthur and Margaret McEwan. His mum died when he was little but his dad remarried to a lady called Catherine Goodwin or McLuskey. His dad died in 1951 at 103 Norfolk St. If anyone knows anything then it would be good to hear from you.

I am looking for living relatives of my ggrandfather William Lilly (1841-1939) son of Wm. Lilly & Janet Stewart Lilly. He married Mary McBride 14 March 1864. They had 11 children, William (1863-1871), Adam, Jane, Alexander, Annie, Francis, Molly, Janet, William, Thomas & Robert. Lucy i served my apprenticeship in dixons untill the day it closed its doors and lived in thistle street till 62 across the street from the govanhill bar, but for the life of me i cant remember dixons blazes bar could u be so kind and tell me were abouts it was? U have me scratching my head in wonder and if u like i could tell u true stories of the hard men who worked there in the 50s thanx jimmy

Six of us lived in a two-room apartment in Lawmoor Street on the south side of Gorbals and we had a great time growing up. At fifteen, I started work in a clothing factory on Clyde St. It was there I discovered the other side of the river "The Barrowland Ballroom" with Billy MacGregor's band and oh boy, did we have a good time! I then worked for Moore and Targets at Glasgow Cross. There was a man called Jimmy C, can't remember his last name, he would sing all day long, thank god he had a great voice. I then moved on to the "Dennison Palais", I guess that would have been in the early sixties. I would love to hear from anyone from Moore and Targets or danced at "The Dennison Palais".
