In the 1940s/50s why did Warwick Street have its name changed to Nicholson Street (Gorbals off Bedford Street)? We were the Mitchells of 40 Warwick Street and overnight became 158 Nicholson Street.

Pat and Tommy McMenemy myself and lots of other young boys were in the army cadets together 7th battalion cameronians copelaw st. Well the gov. trained us young boys to kill at the age 13-14 so it was no wonder we were not afraid to use chibs. The twins had 303 rifles that were bigger than them. I being taller used a bren gun we were taught hand to hand combat using bayonets came in handy in later years. Train our youth to save the planet not kill it off i suppose it all comes down to the area u come from plus the EDUCATION that gets bandied around in your region

Scott McMillian I see by your post the old place hasn't changed a bit in the 40-50s. I rememember adults threw newspaper nappies out the window u are correct it is the people who make the slums but as a irish decendant like most of us from the gorbals we were forced to live in the squaller because the tenaments where mostly divided into single appartments with no toilet hence the paper nappies! We were squeezed into these small rooms were you could hear everything. Stop the welfare u will only get more crime there are lots of good people on welfare we were good folk but we robbed the system by carrying coal and signing on the dole, the only differance I can see is the TV, we get information quicker so it is spread so easily in our day. Our TV entertainment was watching the fights in the streets mostly the drunks on friday/Sat. nights - now its drugs! We had no alarms except the hatchet behind the door for protection and it got used so we're not much of a differance except I believe the people with all the electronic alarms are more afraid of life the drugies the only way to deal with them is make it legal or lock them in a padded cell for a long time until they sweat it out their system, then you have to be tough to take that so u see us old timers coming back (i wish i could) we would still slash or chib each other as we did then until we can be properly educated into the ways of living and our leaders behave like humans should things will and are getting worse understand this be proud of your little bit of heaven help your neighbour n don't throw yer kheeky nappies oot the windi!

This message is for Anna who was seeking info on her granny - a District Nurse in Gorbals area during 1920's (posted January 28, 2006). I worked in the Health & Welfare Dept of the City of Glasgow in the 50's and the District Nurses - nicknamed The Green Ladies because of the colour of their uniforms - were employees of the Health and Welfare Department at that time. I don't know if the department is called Health and Welfare these days - everything changes - but it was situated at 23 Montrose Street (back end of City Chambers). Anyway, I am sure employee records are still on file somewhere in the archives and Anna might get some info on her granny through contacting what now passes for the health and Welfare Department in the City of Glasgow.

I have cousins who lived at 70 Eglinton Street, there were Norman, Peter, Evelyn, Jessie (Freda) and Emily, their mother was Eileen father was Hector. They came to Canada in 1958, I think. Names from the past are Jimmy Parker and Norman and Peter McDonald. A place from the past was smiths snooker hall. Our family stayed on the 2nd floor of the tenaments at 6 cumberland street near the junction of eglington street back in the '60s (64-71). The children attended Abbotsford Primary School. On a Sunday, we also went to Laurenceton/Renwick Church, both of which are sadly away now. I haven't been up that area for 'dunkey's years' but someone told me that the cars still park up the middle of the road in cumberland street? (highly unusual in today's heavy traffic!!). I remember as a kid running about the streets, the "jakies" steaming drunk at Bulloch's off-licence and the boozer underneath the 'high-level' railway, the station was closed by that time. We were always sent down to the 'midgy-bins' with the rubbish. The smell of piss had to be washed away after the drunks had been 'caught-short', every tenant had their turn to do so. The rats had a field day in the midgybins, we used to fight them with brushes and shovels, ah!, the memories

Trying to find out about DAN MCCAULEY/McAuley, lived 166 Hospital Street from about 1937 until his death in the close there in 1944, age 56. His wife SARAH JANE/SALLY McCAULEY stayed on at 166 and married neighbour ALEXANDER/SANDY CARRICK in the 1960s. I think soon after with the redevelopments they moved to Lawmoor or Cumberland St? She was widowed again but stayed in the Gorbals till she died in the late 1980s, age 97. She was active in the Catholic church. She was Scots-born but Dan McCauley, her first husband, was from Donegal, he had worked as a miner, a ganger on road building and, at the time of his death, as a trams overhead lines repairman. He had two daughters from an earlier marriage (their mother died in childbirth), Mary Ann and Lizzie McCauley, they were mostly reared by relatives elsewhere, but Sarah Jane's son FELIX CULLEN, b 1924?, probably lived with them at Hospital Street. Any info or just background on these places much appreciated! Thanks, Eileen

I've just come across this amazing site ... and in reply to Edward McVey's query of a few years ago (03.01.02) about Dr Gladstone Robertson, he was my grandfather. He wrote the book, Gorbal's Doctor, though I don't know whether you can still get it now ? He died in 1977 from a weak heart - something he's struggled with since he was a boy. He's still much missed ... As is his younger son, my father, Richard (Dickie) Robertson, who joined the RAF and died in 1981 ... If anyone remembers my father, Richard, his older brother, Charles, or my grandmother, Alixe, (nee Telford), please could you get in touch ?

Hi everyone! when I think of Glasgow and everything we had, and a lot of it was demolished, it really is a shame, we went to Castlemilk in the 50's and they even tore down, a beautiful castle near where I lived, called Castlemilk House, where Mary Queen of Scots visited, but I can't really complain too much, as I came to America in the sixies, and didnt realize how special our place was, but thats the way it goes, when your young, I love both countries and especially Glasgow, best wishes to all. I used to live at 25 clyde place in the 60's/70's. (until i was 5 to 6) with my mum, dad and two brothers. I remember the Armstrong family who also lived there, in particular Lena and her daughter Marie. I believe she had 3 brothers and 1 sister. we then moved to 79 Laidlaw st. I remember the Boyle family (in particular Bridie) (they used to live at the bottom floor) who used to babysit me and taught me to ride a bike. After which we moved to london in 1973. I can't remember what school I went to, I think it may be gorbals school (if it existed) Anyway I am trying to find lost friends, in particular a girl called Alison Goldie, she was my best friend at school and I have a school photograph of us together to this day. Another girl I am trying to trace, is Ravinder Kaur Alluck, another good friend. Wonder if anybody knows the names mentioned, would be fantastic to hear from them.

The Gorbals once had a heart beat running through every close. Now its full of the heartless.The large Irish immigrant population would turn in their graves if they could only see it now. The descendants of these hard workers have ruined the place(like lots of inner Glasgow). Its not poverty,its people. I witness mothers throwing kids nappies out their own windows,men taking drugs in full view of everyone. The kids of these people have no respect for adults,so how can it change? I talk of huge numbers of Gorbals people not them all. However most decent people are long gone.The new flats built recently and costing thousands to buy have mainly been filled with incomers. These incomers live and place within their own wee street,houses alarmed from top to bottom. Will they hang around? The only solution regarding the scumbags who give this place a bad name is to stop their unemployment/sickness benefit and make them work. The kids having kids should be forced to live with their parents instead of demanding housing without any clue (or will)how to housekeep. The Gorbals has been turned into a dump by the people not willing to try. I just wish some of you oldtimers would move back in.

C-Blocks: Photographs & film footage wanted BBC Scotland have commissioned a documentary about the life and work of the architect Sir Basil Spence who, among many other buildings, designed the famous C-Blocks of Queen Elizabeth Square in the Gorbals which were demolished in 1993. The company making the documentary are keen to find photos and particularly film footage of the blocks, shot by people who lived in them or who visited them. The interiors of the buildings are of particular interest. With film footage like the old Super 8mm format, the company will pay up to £50, depending on quality, to use your footage in their programme. Robert Anthony re: the open air gym in the glasgow green was just over the bridge from the soo side heading for bridgten opposite the old ash football pitches on the rutherglen rd. There was a wooden vualting horse, parralell bars, swinging rings and bars. I went often but it never seemed to get used to its full potential maybe becuase it was all built on solid concrete imagine todays mammies suing the council if wee johnny got hurt as we always did (broke my foot) there were no tuters u just learned by mistakes. Before my wife n I got hitched we went often she fell off the bars landed on her tail bone now 70 this week she had to have a bone transplant in that anamoty area 6 months ago she never complained MUCH but then she IS a gorbals lassie.

Re: "no mean city", the open air gym - as I remember it was just up from the suspension bridge as you crossed from McNeil St and Adelphi St. It consisted of paralell bars, rings (hard to describe), but you swung on them by your hands and a vaulting horse. Probably more stuff than that, but it's been a long time! I can remember guys stripped to the waist (in Winter) exercising, must have been in great shape. Also some bareknuckle fights.

The open air gym on Glasgow Green had parallel bars, A pommel horse, rings and Being a mere woman i don't know what you call the horizontal ladders fo upper body execises. This gym was used alot I think mainly for something to do and also to keep fit. I think it was a boon for the unemployed as there were a lot at that time in the thirties and forties. Re the christening piece it was the opposite sex from the baby who was given it cheers Nan Bell

Re the Christening Piece - As I recall my Granny always refered to that as a "Chitterin Piece" I remember handing one over to a stranger in Mathieson Street on the way to have my brother Christened in St. Francis. Re: outdoor gym in The Green, there were several pieces of equipment there, I do remember the frame with the rings suspended from it. That was back in the forties.

Amelia - they say when taking a baby to get christened you put some silver in two biscuits, gave it to the first person the same sex as the baby its supposed to be lucky for babys start in life. The same as when seeing a new born for the first time you gave it a wee bit silver for luck.

FAO: Terry Young John McCue is alive and well. I know that when i found out the truth i apologised on a differant board were i had read it. Big Artie great guy sorry his name was mentioned on the same column as the other bits of crap and as for u r u female or male as the name can be either? I have been battling cancer for years and only got out of hospital this week the bad bit for u is I BEAT IT AGAIN. And i most definately never said anybody died from any ailment cant u read, except john. That was the only mistake made and whatever caused his problems u r the first person to mention a domestic. I can do no more than apologise, maybe you should say something constructive not destructive ah! Now back to the world cup!
