I am still trying to trace Joe McDonald (Macdonald?) who lived in Portugal Street during the 1930's and 40's. His parents were Jock and Maggie and he had a brother James and two sisters Margaret and Lizzie. I think Joe married an English lady and later moved to Blackburn. I was born in Fife but my mother, Eileen Miller, her mother Joyce, and younger sister Ethel lived in the Gorbals (possibly near Portugal Street)from around the mid-to-late 30's, having come from Northern Ireland. I discovered in 2005 that Joe is my birth father and have been searching for him, or his relatives since then, but with so little information I just keep hitting brick walls. If anyone remembers Joe or his family I would dearly love to make contact with them - I am sad that I may have family I have never met. I know this is a very sensitive issue, but it is genuine and any contact will be treated with the utmost respect.

I remember the Gorbals oh so well, running down hospital st, and along cumberland st to crown st, into lennox's for sweets, then into the "GEORGE" picture house for the saturday matinee, all the old movies "king kong", "in like flint", "tarzan", shouting "easy, easy, fight, fight," at all the action scenes. We were a family of four boys and one girl at the time we lived in hospital st, Michael, Steven, Kevin, Adrian and Grace. mum, Gracie and dad Tony. The people i remember from that time were, mrs samuels (the money lender) the Gerrity's, the Linn's, and the coyles (who lived in a converted shop). My pals at that time were Bernie Linn, Derek Gunn and my best pal at school was "pope tam" Thomas Daniels. And i will never forget my first kiss from the very beautiful Patricia Bonner. I would love to hear what these people are doing now, all the best-----MICK. xxx

Hi Amelia - you got most of the pubs in cumberland st right. Archiebalds was also known as the Cumberland Arms. At that time The pub at the corner of camden st was called the Oak tree. The Ben Cleugh was at the corner of Caley rd and florence st.

I am searching for information regarding Kathleen Bernadette Madden who lived at 125 Hospital Street in the late 1940s - early 1950s. She was part of an Irish family and had several (?) sisters and a father living. I believe that her mother had died by 1951. I have reason to believe that she may have worked at the whiskey bond. During the war I lived with my Grannie, who at the time had a wee sweetie shop on Moffatt St, next to Dick Barton's Pub. On the other side of the Street stood a building that was used as an orphanage as I recall (I was five) A soldier, having been tipped off by a neighbour, came home on compassionate leave, to find his wife with another (Fancy man as they were termed) She refused to open the door, so the soldier put his Lee-Enfiled rifle to the keyhole and fired. Across the road, in the orphanage (If that is what it was) the lady superintendant had just came in and was removing her coat. She placed her new hat on the kitchen table only to see it leap into the air. The bullet had passed through the single-end's window, crossed the street, punched through the orphanage window and got the wee woman's best hat. The domestic dispute was resolved without blood shed as I recall but the polis and the MPs were in attendance. Does anyone remember "The seige of Moffatt Street"? Photos of Dick Barton's corner and my Grannie's wee shop plus the "Moffatt Street Reception House (The Orphanage) can be seen on the Mitchell Library web site..........but I still haven't found a photo of The Sandyfaulds Pend...some o' yese are jist no tryin'

I take it you are referring to the St Francis May procession as a child I walked in the May Procession many times with my sibling it was a very special time for us kids. there was the May Queen and her attendants ,all the kids who had made their first holy communion wore white dresses and vials and the boys wore their best cloths some of us carried baskets or prayer books or nose gays. the girl guides, the brownies , the scout and cubs and the Legion of Mary also walked along with the pipe bands and others it came out of the church and proceeded up Sandyfaulds sty along Caledonia rd; and down Matheson its; and back into the church. We always treated this Sunday as a holiday , we were given sweets by our parents and were paraded before relatives and neibours and made a fuss of. We loved every minuet of it ,it only happened once a year so, we made the best of it and, spent months getting ready for it. This was in the 50sback in the good old day and, my Grandchildren never get tired of listening to my wee stories about when we were kids in the gorbals.

F.A.O. the person who was asking about the St. Francis May procession. I think it was after the Holy Communion because all the girls had on their white dresses and it was only on one of the Sundays. The people who stayed in the streets the procession went past painted their windows. It was brilliant watching it with St Francis pipe band and the lucky girl who was picked out for the May Queen with the pageboy and all the attendants. You had to go early to get a good place to see it all. I used to wish that St. Johns would do something like it. Does anyone remember the pipe band going round some of the streets after the New Year playing?

Happy new year to all Gorbals people everywere. I'm still looking for relatives of Peter and Janet Cairns(nee Muir)they lived in 50 or 56 Surrey Street. They had a large family. In 1901 they were living at 50 Surrey St. the children then were William, Peter, Joe, Janet, Mary, Thomas and John. Janet died 1928 still at 50 Surrey St one daughter Kate married James Robertson. In 1920 the lived in Thistle Street. Peter Cairns was Irish. Family relatives would be Robertson, Cairns, Coyne Kincaid

Brian Martin, I couldn't believe it when I saw your message, we lived at 6 Oxford Lane, 3rd story if I'm right your Mum was my Mum's best pal, did your Mum have a twin sister and was your Dad's name Owen? Sorry but you are wrong. The May procession was only on one Sunday in May, that is the May procession from St. Francis. Maybe you are talking about St. Luke's or St. John's. The procession came out of the Infant's gate in Sandyfaulds Street. It went up the Street to Caledonia Road then down Mathieson Street and into the chapel where the statue of the Blessed Mother was crowned by the May Queen. This was during the era of 1940 to about 1957. I do not know what happened after that time as we moved from St. Francis area around 1957. Really most all children, who wanted to could walk in it. You did not have to have just made your First Holy Communion. Anyway, that is my memory of it and I walked in it many times until I was probably about ten years old.Thanks for renewing the great memories of the May Procession.

Happy New Year from down under..... Does anyone have any news of my friend Marion Logan. She and I attended Camden St primary and Strathbungo Sen Sec. together. We kept in touch until a couple of years ago. I always visited on my trips but could not locate her last year. Marion worked in Littlewoods, never married and lived in Paisley. I have lost touch with her. ...Meanwhile to the person looking for the Shankley's who witnessed a marriage try 79 Florence St because Nan Shankley lived one up in our close. Cheers - Mae
