While looking for something totally unrelated, I stumbled across this site and a post from someone wondering who the boys in Bert Hardys 'Gorbal Boys' photograph were. The one on the left, with the darker hair and holding the jumper is my father in law. He still lives in Glasgow, but now in the west end. He is now nearly 67 and as proud as punch to be part of this important piece of Glasgow history.

I am working on the family history, my great grandfather Robert Smith (he was a carter) was killed in 1914 during WW1. He was with the cameronian scottish rifles 1st battalion. He married Isabella Stevenson in 1911 she lived in 218 Centre St and he in 71 Canal St (now Mauchline St.) I cannot trace him/them after the 1901 census until 1914 prior to him going to the war. So if anyone can help it would be appreciated, I did hear they stayed in Sandyfaulds St, just prior to 1914. What a smashin site I have enjoyed reading the stories makes me proud of my Gorbals heritage Robert.

My Great Great Grandparents Wm & Elizabeth Mclean (Nee McTurk) lived 51 main Stret Gorbals back in the 1841 census , this street was later named Gorbals Street. Can anyone tell me was this street purely Tenement Buildings and as my GGG was recorded as being a Teacher in those days which would be the closest School to where he lived? My father James Barclay lived on McKinley street in the 1920's and then moved to Tradesden Street. He attended Strathbungo school and joined the H.L.I to go to Europe in the latter part of the war. His family McDonalds came from Tiree and his uncles who had served in the Camerons in the first world war worked in the docks. My father who is now 83 often spoke of watching a mine come down on a parachute in the blitz, this mine hit a tram killing all the occupants, my father was saved by a policeman who pushed him and his friends down a close, does this story ring any bells with anyone?.

In response to Iain McCaskey's request re chuch in Partick, Vine St. There are now 2 C of Scotland Churches in this area called Partick South and Partick Trinity. These 2 would be made up from former congregations called Dowanvale, Dowanhill, Hamilton Crescent, Newton Place, Partick High, Old Partick and Partick East. There may have been former congregations who made up these 7, but this info is in the current year book of the church of scotland, and it does not give details of the names of churches before these 7. Just heard that Jim Johnston who used to live up our close at 105 Sandyfaulds Street died suddenly at the beginning of the week. May his soul rest in peace. They were a great family and we used to have lots of fun growing up in that close. There were probably about twenty five weans that lived our close. Didn't have play dates in those days. Just went out the back and whoever was there, then, that is who you played with.

F.A.O. Richard Dodson I remember "wee johnny christies" shop well it was at cumberland street end. My Dad chewed "Gallaghers Warhorse Tobacco" because he was a miner down the pits and he used to send us sometimes to johnnie shop for the tobacco. If my dad had not much money he would buy a half ounce of it and wee johnnie could never cut it evenly on the block of wood he used. My dad told us to make sure we got the biggest half. We used the dairy in Cumberland st. called McIndoes were the lady took the milk from the big urns, it was between Warwick St. and Abbotsford place. Do you remember the shop at the top end of Hospital st that sold the penny vantases it was facing the weighing machine building which still stands to this day and also the grain store shop on Gorbals St. and Cumberland St. the shop is still there but it isn't a grain store. Great memories.

I lived at 75 thistle st, was born there in 1945. Went to castlemilk in 1954, we finally had an inside bathroom, ha ha, but i remember everything, how we even crossed the traffic to get to saint lukes school by ourselves. We were all street smart in those days, and remember the washhouse when we went with our mammies. I live in usa now and proud to have been born in the Gorbals. Also we used to play in the swingpark in thistle st and rutherglen rd. I also went to Saint bonaventures. Great to see this message board and all the memories, thanks all!

The Gorbals name is supposed to have come from many places but i quite like the gaelic one which i believe means rough village! i have spent the last three years writing about the gorbals and the book will be out soon. colin

Hi, i'm trying to get in touch with any of my dad's mates from the old gorbals, he was born in 1952 and lived for most of his childhood/teenage years there/ Also spent alot of time with Geoff Shaw. His name was Billy Dearie, also known as McCubbin. Would love to hear more stories about those days. The stories my Dad told me before he passed away in 2003 were fascinating!
