I always think the Gorbals mentality travels well worldwide. Take for example my mother and father. They decided to meet up with me in Tenerife about ten years ago. I was already there and hired a cab to take me to the airport. The cab was outside waiting with an impatient driver and it took ages for them to arrive in departures. I then saw mam and dad appear and they had obviously been having a wee party on the plane. Anyway I tells my father to hurry up as the surly taxi driver is waiting. He replies.."Tell him tae F-aff, there ur plenty taxis aroon. We'll get another wan." I went out and told the disgruntled Spanish taxi driver that he need not wait any longer and paid him what he was due. Two men then got into the taxi. We got into a cab just behind my former taxi and were speeding along the highway when my ex-taxi sped off the road and crashed into a barrier. I said to my dad,"Phew, that could have been us dad!" but he just shrugged his shoulders and said,"But it ! wisnae, wis it?" Now that's what I call real Gorbals attitude! That anecdote is not in my new book about the Gorbals but there are plenty more. It's out soon. e-mail me if you want to know more. Colin

I lived in Nicholson Street in the early 1950s. I went to St. Johns school and remember the playground was at the top of the building. I made my holy communion on the 3/6/1950 and the chapel was close to the school. My name is McQuade and I would be grateful if any other McQuades could contact me to see if we are related in anyway.

Our family was the last to get a new house in Castlemilk from the Gorbals we had nine children and ma da in a single end low down in lobby close never saw the sky just other tenements in your back how did they do it. I remember all Gorbals was a busy place if you had money and we never had, just always hungry thanks Anne

I left an inquiry on the form about 2 1/2 weeks ago but so far it has not been posted. I was looking for a gal by the name of Betty Hunter. Her husband is called Alex. Last known address was 45 Auchinloch St. and that was in 1964. I would be very pleased if anyone had any info about her, we were pals and worked together for a time when I was there on a working holiday. I was born in Springburn but came home to 50 Crown Street where I lived with my Mom and Gran and Grandad, and Uncles and Aunts, all in the same close. Across the street another Aunt and her family stayed and an Uncle lived above the dairy. I can't remember if it was the floor above or the next one. The family were the Gorhams. My Mom married a Canadian Sailor and we moved here in 1944. I remember the stories she use to tell when I was young. We first went back in 1956. Since then I have been back many many times, and call it home. My heart is in Canada but my soul is in Scotland. There are no people! like the Scots, great people. It doesn't matter where you go, you will find us there. I check your site a few times a week and love reading about everything. The names and places bring back memories of my Moms stories. Keep up the good work. Murin.

Joseph Hughes - George Cross Friday 23rd March, 2007 is the 61st Anniversary of the death of Private Joseph Hughes, R.A.S.C. A Gorbals resident and only nineteen years old, Joseph Hughes was stationed at Lymun Barracks in Hong Kong where he was involved in clearing the aftermath of the war, including landmines. He was driving a 3 ton vehicle carrying ammunition and explosives into the magazine area at the Barracks. As the vehicle was entering the storage area, it started to smoulder and caught fire.Knowing full well that his truck could explode at any moment, Joseph did everything in his power to put out the fire, firstly by trying to remove the burning camouflage netting, then by using fire extinguishers. Unfortunately the truck blew up and two days later Joseph died of his injuries. Joseph was subsequently awarded the George Cross for gallantry and is remembered by those in his regiment and the Hong Kong holiday village which is now situated where Lymun barracks used to be. Here in Glasgow and the Gorbals in particular few have heard of Joseph and his heroism. A plaque containing a replica of the George Cross medal awarded to Joseph Hughes, and a brief summary of his bravery (including photograph) is now hanging inside the entrance (to the right) of the St. Francis Centre, 405 Cumberland Street in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. It is fitting that this should be in the area where Joseph was born and will be a place that people can pay their respects to a brave young soldier who gave his life for so many others. This was made possible by the efforts to have him remembered by Joseph' cousin Irene Finn and with the help of Glasgow City Councillor James Mutter (HUTCHESONTOWN WARD 66) and Mr George Donnachie of the RASC/RCT Association. The following poem was written by Elsa Beattie (elsabeattie@hotmail.com) in memory of a brave young soldier. JOSEPH HUGHES – GEORGE CROSS - FOR A HERO WAS HE - Joseph Hughes gave his life for his Service Corps ‘Brothers’ his the ultimate price to save so many others. Just a lad from the Gorbals how proud we should be of that brave young soldier for a hero was he. His fear and his pain we can only surmise how he must have suffered in his sacrifice. With esteem his name spoken as it always will be by his comrades-in-arms of the RASC. In death then young Joseph his actions rewarded for his gallantry a George Cross awarded. His body lies cold far away, in the earth but let’s bring his soul home to the place of his birth. Each act of remembrance brings Joseph back home to the land of his fathers his spirit will come. So let’s always remember with a thought, or a prayer Joseph Hughes from the Gorbals and his courage so rare. © ELSA J BEATTIE

I am still looking for any remaining GLENs from the Gorbals area. My father James Francis was born in South Wellington Street which later became Lawmoor Street. His brothers and sisters Were William 1893 James Francis 1895 Jeanie 1897 Nellie Craigie 1898 Isabella Cochra 1900 Frank 1902 and Alexander Ross 1906. The Streets they lived in were 285 South Wellington Street, 134 Thistle Street, 171 Sandyfaules, 313 Street Crown Street and 65 Florence Street. They will have maybe married and still have children in the Glasgow area. If anyone has any info on any Glens from this area please e-mail me

I lived at 75 Florence St. not far from the Florence St. Clinic, I went to Camden St. Primary School. My grandmother and Grandfather Aggie and Tam Daly lived 'one up' over 'Susie's veg shop at 41 Rutherglen Rd. This was opposite the swingpark beside the stage door of the Citizens Theatre. My best friend lived across the road from my grandparents her name was Alice o'Reilly. I remember playing 'rounders in the back court, 'kick the can' in rutherglen Road, peever, ball and skipping ropes - I've forgotten most of the songs we used to use when playing 'ropes'and 'ball' I well remember the 'May Day' parades also the 'Orange Walk' that would stop the traffic. I found this site by accident and reading the content has brought back many a memory.

My gran, Lizzie Darroch, was born in Mathieson Street, went to Hayfield School got married to Joe in St Francis Church and lived in Lawmoor Street from 1930 to 1958. Lizzie died 4 years ago, if she had lived, tomorrow (6/3/07) would have been her 100th birthday. We where known as the pen gang. All the lads used to work for Hislops bunching sticks after school hours. I am sure someone in the Gorbals today can help.

Trying to trace my dads family. Mary Dodds used to live on Polmadie Road, daughter of Johanna maiden name Christieson. Dad was the son of Johanna's youngest sister Catherine Christieson she was not married and Dad spent sometime as a baby with Mrs Hunt in Centre Street then was put back in a childrens home and went to Mrs Leitch on Cubie Steet when he was about 11 which would of been about 1930 to 32. Dad was born in 1921. Catherine his mum ended up emigrating to New Zealand and married a McLaughlan I think he was probably from the same district in Glasgow. Dad joined the RAF in the war and only returned to Scotland once after that. I am really sad he didn't show me his beautiful country with the most amazing people. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks

F.A.O Donna Burke. I remember your grandad well, although he was a few years older than me. I got to know him when he was winching your gran (sadie cowan) she and her younger sister, may have lived across the street from me in their aunts house Mrs Warren, at 157 nicholson street. When they married they got a house in the next close to the warrens. By that time i was married myself and lived in the house above the double eagle pub. My son eddie who was born in 1957, palled about with your dad and uncles. If i remember right, when i moved from bedford street in 1965,i moved to the house that your uncle chic was moving from at 65 eglinton street (above the old bridge street subway) your grans young sister May, went to the same secondry school as me, our lady & st margarets in stanley street, kinning park. I'm wondering if anyone knows my father's family, they lived in the Gorbals from around 1940-1960, his name is Richard McAlpine and his 2 brothers were Burt and Robert, his 3 sisters were Ella, Alice and Jean (who died of cancer in the late 40's). His dad, who I think was called Albert was apparently murdered in the Gorbals or nearby in 1957, pushed off a balcony in a tall tower block. If anyone can recollect this happening then I'd be very interested in finding out any information anyone has as I literally know nothing about what happened. Thanks!
