To Ronnie Meldrum I remember you, your mother and your wife Betty very well. You had a lovely flat out in East Kilbride and I visited you with the respective wives of Robert Hawkins and Archie H-Betty and Helen. You and your good wife were great company and I wonder if Betty remembers me. Archie and Helen split up and he has lived in Australia since 1964 or there abouts. The story about half a shirt each, runs true to my ears and they were always having good natured jabs at each other.Haven't seen Robert for around 30 years and I understand he lives down South. Funny thing is Ronnie, I couldn't wait to get out of the Gorbals and lived in the West End of Glasgow for many years and thought I had cracked the Social Mobility thing. But one thing you can say for sure is that Gorbals folk were real and you usually knew where you were with them. I found out that the folk in the West End weren't nearly so honest or so generous. The problem with getting older is that at times I get home sick for a place called Gorbals that no longer exists, except in my head. There was some great fun had wasn't there you could run a Gorbals version of a soap like Neighbours for 50 years and still come up with great story lines! To all those who recall Adelphi School in the 70's. My sister and I remember Mrs Kirk who taught PE, nickname Captn Kirk! Mr Main the Maths Teacher, believe he played for Rangers FC in his youth. Mr Nelson the Biology Teacher, he was everybody's buddy. He fell in a river once during a field trip. There was a Teacher on the first floor, who had to wear white gloves when writing on the blackboard because of an allergy, she also claimed her classroom was haunted. Anyone remember Abbotsford Primary in the late 60's? We remember Mrs Grey - Granny Grey, who wore her Academic Gown in class, and sat on a really high chair, Mr Green the Janitor, Miss Ross - lovely person. She was there until the school closed, and sang with the Phoenix Choir, maybe she still does? Miss Walker in the Infants. The HT chewed on her glasses as she spoke, could not make out a word she was saying! Great School.

Does anyone remember a fire at Florence St? I remember one--in our "unit"! I lived at 95 Florence street on the ground level and my brother started the curtains on fire--a neighbor apparently saw the fire (parents weren't home for some reason) and rushed in, pulled down the curtains and stomped out the fire. My brother caught it for playing with matches!

Hello to all out there in the Gorbals. My mother came from a large family & lived in Portugal Street. My grandfather John Byrns family came from Ireland, and name was changed to Burns when arrived over here, he worked for the railway and had horse (called Donald) & cart My grandmother Lilly (nee Daily) they had 11 children. My grandmother had 3 sisters, Bridie McPhilips,had 3 children James, Owenie and Mary Essy McKandra, had 2 children, Nancy and Joe & Nan Mullen, had 3 children was young Nan, Tilly, & Edward. Grandads side, was the Meckens & the Moonies. Does anyone out there know any of my ancestors, doing my family tree, Please get back to me

I lived in Turnlaw Street and palled it up with your cousins Robert & Archie from our Hayfield days through our teens up to the early 60's. Archie and his wife Helen were my best man and bridesmaid at my wedding. Our group consisted of Jimmy Hatton, Alex Bremner, Billy McTear and John McKenna (a classmate of mine from John Street School). I was the one who would organize our annual trip to Blackpool for the holidays and even had my girlfriend/later wife Betty tag along with us. Our weekend splurge would be Barrowland on a friday night followed by ice skating at Crossmalouf on the Saturday and Lombardo's cafe top end of Rutherglen Road on a Sunday where we would barely have enough left for a hot drink. Oh the good old days!! A classic I'll always remember was Robert & Archie fighting over a clean shirt for the dancing and ending up with half each. Gradually we all got ourselves attached with a girlfriend/wife and went our separate ways. Perhaps you could help me get in touch with the guys if their still around I've not included my email address as I was snowed under with junk mail from a previous site visit but I would appreciate any info you can give me. FAO: Karrie, blank, I knew the crossens and the kilnas very well, i knew margaret & betty very well margaret was deaf due to having had meningitis when she was about 15/16. We used to gather in their house on a sunday evening, and mrs crossen would bake cakes and we would have s party. Margaret taught me the deaf alphabet and i taught her how to dance. (she could feel the vibration of the music from the gramaphone) I was in the same class as pat kilna at primary school and i remember the rest of the family. Pat married marie rizza, they had two children, joseph and kim, they later divorced. I lived in nicholson street, where i was born (in a house) from 1935 to 1965. Regards, owen dougan.

RE: Fire in florence street. I lived in 125 florence street and was one of those children who was saved. I am now 50 years old and have 4 children and 4 grandchildren. My brother michael has 3 children and my brother tony has 5 children and 4 grandchildren. None of us would be around today if it hadnt been for the courage of our neighbours. My mum and dad are still going strong and living in pollok. Eternal thanks to those neighbours.

We both remember the Moffats up the Pig and Whistle Close and the family next door but cant remember their name. My girlfriend Mary Foster used to hate meeting Mrs. Moffat with the smell of dettol it meant her mother had new baby they lived up the next close to Pig & Whistle. My husband remembers all of the Moffats, Mary Lumsden, Tommy Foster Tommy Gallagher,The Kennedy family, Thomson familY Vines. I had an aunt and uncle lived up that close Jimmy Doran and his wife Sarah and 4 sons and a daughter think they lived 2up and Ben and Annie Fox lived low down. Jimmy Mc Lauchlin the fruit shop. My father was the manager of Pig & Whistle during war.

I'm looking for an old friend, we went to Oatlands school, then on to Hayfield School together. Her name is Sandra Henderson and she lived with her mother, brother Ian and a younger sister on Mathieson Street. I'm not sure what number(346/8?)I lived at 345 Lawmoor Street and Sandra lived in the close directly across the back court from me. I left in 1962 and that was the last time I saw her. I think I saw her once on a bus going to Castlemilk with 2 young children before i came to Canada. If anyone knows where she's living now I would like to hear how she is doing. To Alexander Innes Hi glad to hear from somone who knew the same folk as me! I was begining to think that I lived in a bubble! I lived 1 up right which ran the full length of the Pig and Whistle. Knew the Samsons well there was thirteen of them and Nancy the Mother was alive and well some four years ago living in Moffat Street- as you know that's just around the corner from McNeill Street. Also knew the Ferguson's, Pauline, Mary and Tommy. Knew Patsy Shankland well and her brother John. A big Gorbals family and some of them still live there. You could always tell the Shankland's by their lovely blond hair. Don't know what incident you were talking about as there were several- the one I remember was one of the Samson girls who was attacked and thrown over the stair well from three stairs up. A case in point that life was not always rosy in those days either. Who else do you remember? Any of my cousins the Hawkie's(Hawkins)? All the best to you and yours Rita Moffat

Was reading Rita Moffat's message about McNeil St and the pub the Pig & Whistle. I knew a lot off people from there i went to school with Kate and Anne Samson who stayed up the close on top off the pub. If Rita is reading this i also was in the same class at school with Patsy Shankland who stay at the corner on McNeil st. I used to go out with Margaret Ferguson. I knew lots off people from Mcneil st. Rita do you remember that tragic inccident that happened years ago with a girl who stayed up the close above the Pig & Whistle I went to Buchan st primary then Adelphi. FAO Rosetta Conelly (Pollok) The book shop as I remember was called (dirty Maggies)and it was on Rutherglen Road around the corner from either Waddell St or Mathieson St. You could take your books or comics that you had read and exchange them for others. The lady had thousands of books and could always lay her hand on the book that you were looking for. Hope this helps you. Amelia

F.A.O of Cathie Gwinski, Spring lane was off Commercial Road it ran from there to Lawmoor Street. There was a hall there where lots of the kids went to it, it was for non Catholics but all denominations went as you got a bun and a cup of tea for free never went to it myself but people I knew went there they got you to sing hymnns such as "Running over, Running over my cups full of running over etc etc. I think thats how it went someone out there will remember the words and I also think there was a pickle work there. If I can find out any more info. I'll let you know. Hopes this helps you. There is a photo taken from either Commercial or Rutherglen road and there is a pub at the corner of it called Cecils's Spring lane was just a few yards away from there but cannot remember if you see it in the photo.

Hi Yasmin I did know your mum, but not that well I used to play in her backcourt. She was known as Bertha Austin. She was around the same age as me-64 and I am still going strong. We used to call the Street she stayed in, Snowden Street, the "the new hooses" as they seemed very posh to us who lived up the dank dark close right next to the Pig and Whistle Pub In MCneill St. The pubs still open and some folk from the Gorbals meet there every Friday or Saturday night. The thing I remember about where your Mum stayed was that it had reaL GREEN GRASS IN THE BACK COURT WHERE WE HAD NOTHING BUT CLABBER (MUD). They also had what we refered to as "lucky middens" meaning that the people through out more than cinders and ashes from the fire. The other envied luxury was that her house had an inside toilet where we had the cludgy outside on the landing and shared by three sets of families which could mean anything from 30 weans upwards. Surprise surprise it was often bunged up and overflowing. Nae fancy soft toilet paper, just newspaprer cut in squares with a bit of string threaded through and hung on a nail from the door. Our backsides often had yesterdays news printed on it. Your brother was probably known by my cousins Robert, Archie, Jame, Billy, and Johny Hawkins. Great times your Mum had in the Gorbals as a wee lassie we had nothing but heh, it counts for something doesn't it? Bellyfuls of laughter and all the pieces in jam you could eat...... we were rich. We were a tough bunch in those days "CUMBIE" BOYS! always fighting not Artie he would rather sing! We were the Hayes, Ryans, McShanes, Mcneilly's a family to each room and we had to share with my granny flora hayes known as maw. Most the time we had no lights, no gas we all had to cook in the coal fire, no hot water to wash with but we had plenty of rats, even in bed at night! Toilet in landing no glass in window, rain on head, no light, no lock, any paper to wipe your backside. Gas lamp on landing allways flickerd, I made little swords on the tramlines with nails when the tram ran over them. I made bogey's with a wooden box, length of wood, one skate split in half and we would race them up and down hospital st. We all live at 29 hospital street.

I vaguely remember the gorbals. I was born 192 hospital street 1962. I'm from a very large family. I remember the storm that destroyed our tenaments in 1967 ( i think). Can you remember it and did you go into the sheltered accommodation?????????????? would love to hear from you all.

Hi i posted a brief message already regarding our family spencers. We all went to st francis school does anyone remeber betty mclennons dance school in lawmoor st? My brother james sang with mary mcgowan and sang outside st francis church on christmas eve. Also my sister and i went to langbank for a holiday, remember some teachers from school mrs wilson, mrs green, miss mcnulty, molly cairney was the singing teacher. Hope to hear from someone remembering some of these people.

Does anyone remember the sweeney's from hospital st? There was a big family. The boys were doalty, rodger, dom, tony, thomas, joe, bernard, the girls, margaret, bernadete, madge, threasa, bridie. The Mum and Dad were Rodger & threasa. I was talking on the phone to Madge who has lived in Kent for some years now. I was telling her about the gorbals site, she was wondering if anyone remembers her on any of the family, she would love to hear from any. I cant remember the number, I know it was a high one. To Ruth: I do remember Mr Linda from Adelphi I think he taught English and his wife taught French. One of my friends has met Mr Hall the art teacher a few times he is a member of the boating club in Queens Park. One of the funniest things I remember about Adelphi was having to listen to Miss Eadie trying to play the piano when you were in Mr Fletts class for maths.

F.A.O Owen Dougan I remember that day as well, we stayed in a single end and then moved down to a room/kitchen with an inside toilet thought we were toffs. We were on the top flat and our windows looked right into the railway in fact you could have a conversation with the drivers on the train when they stopped. Did you know any people from Salisbury St?

FAO. amelia mckinley,i lived in the last close just before you came bedford street, ellises fruit shop was on the corner. I remember during ww11, a us troop train stopped on the bridge at the top of salsbury street, and the yanks threw gum and sweetys down to us kids on the street, that was some scramble that day. By coincidence i also got married in 1956.

F.A.O. Myra I remember Stirling Hunters well got my pram from it to pay up, it was cream and coffee. They also did the television also got mine from there. There was 2 brothers who used to fix them named Eccles.

Is there anybody out there who was in the C5 Rambeling club around 1956? We all used to meet at the corner off my old st Nicholson st. Well a pal i knew from those days got in contact with me through friends reunited, He sent me photos off us all in the C5 Rambeling club. I was 10 in it. I have the photos on my pc. Re: Rena's Granny living opposite the wee park on Rutherglen Road. Me and my wee pals held the 1948 Olympics in that park when it was still a graveyard. Rab Ha' The Glesca Glutton was reported to have been buried there. (Dae ye know how he was buried there? Naw. Because he wis deid!)

F.A.O. Owen of Glasgow I stayed in Salisbury the continuation of Warick St. between 1935 to 1956 when I got married my parents stayed there until it was demolished.
