I was born at 163 Wolseley St in 1925,I was an unwanted child which I learned in later life. My memory of the three up singl end was that life wasn't dull. There was plenty of nightlife when the gaslight was put out. Bugs made there merry way down the wall for there nightly feast, mice used our singlend as a playground, when it rained the floor was covered with pots, pans & buckets. On a windy night there were more slates on the pavement than what was on the roof. If you survived the night, you remove your coat from the top of the bed and went to school. I went to Wolseley St school the teachers were all trained by the sas. I didn't learn much at school by the time the teacher got some kind of order it was time to go home. Then I went to Calder St school. My first job when I left school was with R and J Dick near to Templetons carpet factory. I also worked in Strathclyde Distillery. When I left the RAF I worked with Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds in Hillington as a fitter, thats where I met Matt mcGinn the poet and folk singer who also worked there. I came one day from work and I said to the long haired one who speaks with fork tongue, we are leaving and making our way south. There were two lorries going down to Coventry I was in one lorry with one child and my wife was in the other lorry with the other and we landed in Coventry early in the morning and we had to find somewhere to stay. However everything turned out well after quite a struggle. I managed to get a job with Massey Fergusson, I was there 27 yrs then I retired. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Jim Brown who lived in Fauldhouse St he lived in the close oposite the steamie, then he went to live in Castlemilk.

My Grannie, Elizabeth Hannon, was born at 84 Nicholson Street in 1883/4. She was illegitimate and her mother's name was Annie. She turned up in Manchester in 1901 Census without her mother. Anybody out there have any knowledge of them.

I was going through the year of letters for 2006, and I read that Angie Masterson was sick. She was married to Sammy Peden and the last time I spoke with her was at his funeral and a class mate of mine, Sadie Boyle she married his brother James, and his wee gang was called the Penguin. What a voice she had Angie has a younger sister and I think she winched Jim Steen could be wrong on that one though. Angie she was the fashion setter and when she walked she kinda sliffed her feet dead galis, and always the best of gear. I hope that she is doing well and wish her and the rest of the family the best Doris

Great web site. I was born in the gorbals. My family lived in 490 crown street. I attended Holy Cross schools. My best friends at School were mary Brennan who I am still in touch with and a girl named Roaemary Gemmell. I have lost touch with her since 1955 when we came to live here in Australia, would love to hear from her. I remember going to the Band Of Hope in Crown Street. There was an Ice cream shop close by and we used to take a jug to the shop and buy a jug of ice cream. We lived in the first Close next to the church on the corner of Crown and Cathcart road. I remember the strong smell of Wellingtons in the stores at Chrismas time. Love to hear from any one who would like to get in touch with me.

Pat Lynch - billy wilson i knew from the gorbals married my cousin Sadie Kidd and he owned a butchers shop he often went dancing at the locarno he got remarried and had 2 kids a boy and a girl. He sold a few classy suits to my husband as they were the same size and billy could afford good gear he had a shop near Clair st. and one mount Florida way i think if still going he would be about 75 or more cheers wee betty

My family are all back east and as for me ah wis always a wondered to much in life to let pass by. Aye that is Ackie Steen my ex but we are still best of pals. He never had any chib marks as ma auld da used to say that boy he is so skinny his face couldnae hod a black eye, and he is a prodestant (hid tae smile at that one. We were raised half arsed caflikc and nea religious bitterness in oor faimly. 1964 that is when I got ma first hearing aid man did that change ma whole wurld, as ah never realized just how DEAF that I was. I went through a personality change I could hear people and not try to read their lips. So off I went on a new adventure with a new man Tosh McIntyre from the Garn gad. My sisters both said all the way to america to meet a Glasweigin, BUT LO AND BEHOLD 43 YEARS STILL TOGETHER must be doing some thing right. Any hoo we have both doen well Ackie he is still enjoying the parties and the bar him and Artie oh and both still chanting away. I dont think that Jim Steen and Ackie get along oh and his mum she died a couple of years ago and I did not know that her wee house got totaled glad she was not in it at the time. Dont you some times think of how great it would be for us all to be able to sit doon some were and all have a good blether and compare how our lifes all went. Oh and as for Franks (Tarzan) his daughter a lot of people have to have some one that they can blame for their own insecurties and most of the time they dont know what the heck they are talking about. Do you keep in touch with Jim Steen? the family never liked me? And dont you find that people drag a lot of crapola around with them that was over and done with years ago. I will be going to New York soon as Ackie his pals are giving him a party, that wee effer he gets a party every year, so he has asked if me and his daughter Doris would come, I keep in touch with Terry he has sent me his books that he has wrote, seems that every other punter wants to write a book, hmmmn mayby I should try but just cant seem to think that anyone would want to read about ma escapes and what can I say very interesting life and the people that I have met. I was sad to hear about Tam Wilson I always thought of him during the years and wondered how he fared during the years. And as for Julia Murrey, lost touch with her but she was not really interested in renewing our friendship, oh well her loss. So keep the faith and remember who loves you Auld friend Doris OW -->

No 2 Snowdon Street Ah might hiv said at one time oh ah cin see the glesga Green and run doon the cuddy brae tae the watter as the river clyde was right there. But what a view must be worth a few sovies that whole street Snowdon St. let me see, we had the Steels, the Boydes, the Boles, Shanklins, Bisland, Kelly, Currans, the Martins, Bisland and the Giblins, the lauders and some I cant remember oh and the Bookie his close just out the wee room window to the left the Bookie his pitch, he had a fast getaway as the back went into a bunch of different closes all in the same area. We had two Bookies in the area the other one he was on Rutherglen Rd and we used to climb the middens over the dykes aye with the glass, for a shortcut., oh and the library, warmest place in the street. Mc Neil St that is. Now that is another story the Coop Bakery Saturday early morning specials and the queue for we bought six loafs and all the rejected broken stuff. Now that was a treat! Then McKlintock the ginger factory again McNeil St the swinging bridge boy I did not realize what a great culture I was growing up in. All in that one Area I could go on all day but a lot of other people have much to say. Oh and if any one has ay information of a cousin of mine Bertha Thompson, whom I have not heard about since 1959, she had two girls and the oldest one was called Tomasina after her Irish Father again with much thanks Doris

I didnt know tam was in oz until i read it somewhere then i heard he was dead i wrote about me n tam anecdote dated 3-7-07. I married betty smith 50 yrs ago came to oz 64 her brothers followed to sydney we live near brisbane knew john weir! but he lived in the calton i hung about with artie n sabu from errol st for a time then me n chick McQUEEN ran about together for a few yrs as I tend to drift when nothin doin believe it or not i took a liking to studying took a job with the ATOMIC ENERGY before migrating was here 5yrs broke my back in an accident after yrs of rehab i trained apprentices n engineering got cancer for the 5th time thats why i sit at this machine still studying n enjoying it too retired at 52 now 69 as u rote in one of yer posts how r gorbalonians doin now werever they R. Trying to find anyone that might know my maw and da. My mother was mary mckay she deliverd lots of babies in the gorbals, my dad was a docker they had lots of friends. To James and Christina Philbin Your last anecdote brought back memories I thought I had long forgotten. Mutter rings several bells. There is a Jimmy Mutter who has been a counsellor for Gorbals for several years now and is a real firebrand-very passionate about improving the lot of people who live in the Gorbals. Could be connected to the family in Mcneil Street. The irony of course is that the area is now full of yuppie's who do not need any help thanks very much! Some flats there will set you back a couple of hundred thousand pounds. Bet you could have bought the whole of Gorbals for that at one time. I was also at Hayfield School with a boy called Mutter- can't remember his first name. Met him around 1975 at a do in a pub in town and he had made a lot of money from scrap metal and owned a Rolls Royce! Remember the license grocers in Mcneil St- think it was more license than grocers. I remember certain members of my family gossiping about women popping in for a Gill of the MAMMY MINE, WINE. Few women of course ventured into pubs in those days. In any case my mother's family had a cheek to talk as they were all fond of a half or ten. One in particular used to take a "bad turn" at social occasions, funerals and Ne'rday in order to get an extra sip to help her "recover". When that stopped working she had a bad habit of "forgeting" where she had put her drink and scoffing the next one to hand. Back Street concerts were always popular and yours truly frequently organised them in the backcourt of 66 McNeil St. There was a kind of bevelled bit with a pole and I used to tie a rope to it - the other end was slipped over a hook on the wall and the patchsheets were hung over that to create a wee space where I used to do some dancing and singing. Always the entrepreneur I charged a penny to "get in" The older and brighter weans were flyer than me and used to climb to the top of the midden and sit in comfort in the "balcony"-for hee haw. You know what I miss most? It's the joy, fun and great! big belly laughs I used to have. But of course there were lots of downsides that perhaps we choose not to remember- I was spoiled rotten by Ma Moffat, (my gran) my mother and my auntie's but it must have been a very hard life for lots of Gorbalites. To the Philbin's, you are so helpful to so many people. What great memories you have. My mum was a Lochrie who lived at 45 McNeil St. She was Mary, her sister Nessie recently passed away. The last remaining Lochrie is my Aunty Sadie, she's been in London for about 60 years now. She remembered your name when I told her about the message board. She celebrated her 80th birthday this year and we had a great birthday party for her in Glasgow. Are there any other Lochrie's out there? I also know of it being spelled Loughrey and Loughery.

Does anyone know a Cornelius “Connie” Moore? The best friend a man could have, especially in a tight spot. He lived at 75 Thistle Street, Gorbals, I believe. I last saw Connie at RAF Portslade in 1944. Have tried ‘service pals.com’ and others, but no luck. If anyone has any suggestions to locate Cornelius, or news of him, I would be eternally grateful. Hi gorbalites This is a long shot but does anyone remember my mother Liz or Betty Moffat? I know she was friendly with a blond woman with naturally curly hair in the early 1940's and I think her name was Frankie, (nickname) McGuiness. Maybe Christine Philbin will know of some connection? FAO Doris Austin: tam n me used to carry coal from pollockshaws coalyard we were only 16 the other carriers would sign on the dole as well but we only lasted a few weeks then we both worked as nippers for the brickies in castlemilk, he nearly got me killed for waterin doon the milk for the brickies tea. Took my brothers truck for a drive got it stuck in the mud just left it n said somebody stole it went to tams brothers house nerday 55. Artie too sammy slipped us a micky he had 2 women as well all i remember was tam swinging punches at the invisible man artie singing and sliding doon the wall to the sitting position were he still was in the morning i just curled up n went for a kip. I was a T totaler but did hiv a wee sip oche a still can taste it my tung twisted n slipped to the back of my throat i woke up early n going home as tam was on his face artie was still in the sitting position trying i think ti sing i went to say goodnight sam only to find a girl in her all together wearin what i thought was a large spurn wit a site nea mer drink! Hi, does anyone out there know sisters claire and mary-jane, they lived at the circus in toryglen when they were of primary school age, they will both be in their early twenties now. They were last known with the surname tunilla but this may have changed when their mum lorraine remarried. (lorriane's maiden name was taylor) any information would be much appreciated.

Looking for any info on grandparents john and bella (isobell) kane from oatlands children were alice and jean twins, helen and frank my father. Grandfather sold fruit from horse and cart in the 40s or 50s i beleive and had a brother frank, believe bellas maiden name was mcewan.

Rita Moffatt the number of the close facing you was 53 next door to Welsh the license grocers. The Taylors lived on the ground floor and Mr. Taylor nick-named wee skeedy used to sit in his chair at the corner all day think he had brittle bone disease his wife was called Maggie Jean she came from Peterbro or Aberdeen had unusual accent they had a son and a daughter. Son ran a foorball team called Rancel no prize for guessing why daughter had an amazing voice sung at Metropole when Jimmy Logan organised a group called Back Court Parade. Next door were the Thorntons upstairs Maggie Cairney a Hawker 2 sons and Mr. Gray a carter used to bring his horse and cart to the close he had 2 daughters Agnes and Isa No. 51 was the Healeys upstairs Count Lavelle Cantleys old Mrs. Collins (my cousins Granny) the Flockarts top floor Tommy Kelly and his sister No.49 Billums Taylor Mc Cafferty Waddell McKenzie upstairs Collins Robertson Mutter Mc Tear McGuiness Nelland Wull Scott brother and sister. I lived up 47 I remember everyone who lived up my close lots of characters great neighbours and 45, and 43 then it was the dairy if you went to Hayfield you will remember the penny bags from McLintocks. My husband remembers Ina and Mary Lumson well and their make-up. Great memeries I could go on and on we did have a Dunny which was my husbands den they used to keep all their wooden boxes down there break them up for firewood and sell them for a penny a bunch he said they had it whitewashed and used to have wee paries down there (before I knew him) with their spoils. hi doris the 2 thieving cops "rabbit eyes" being one screwed galbreaths shop in lawmoor st between cumberland st. n caly rd. In the late 40s early 50s late winters nite us kids were watching them carry the cigarettes to hide them in the middens in the backyard of lawmoor st. n mathison st. We scrambled across unseen n stole them out the midden near caly rd. end sold them to the women in the shebeen in lawmoor st n the cops called us BAD BOYS makes me laff! ten quid
