What do you think?

Post by braveheart »

Hi all,

No matter how long ago and no matter how far you have wandered away from the Gorbals, you always feel a part of it. It is almost like you have some ownership, and a feeling of being proud that you were part of it, a feeling that has never gone away. I learned so much about life when I was brought up in the Gorbals, lessons that have and still stand by me even today.

Very proud to be a Gorbals boy.

:) could'nt agree more john........whatever people say my childhood was a happy one in caledonia road through the 50's and 60's still remember the humour and compassion of my people, the safety we had to play in the streets knowing everyone was watching from somewhere or the other........great memories

Yes I agree with you Tweedie, things were tough in those days, but us kids weren't really aware of that. We had happy times playing in the streets in safety, we looked after each other, and we had adults looking out for us all. The kids in the Gorbals had more Aunties and Uncles than anywhere else in the world, everyone you knew acted as a relation.

I lived round the corner from you in Hallside Street in the 50's and 60's and went to Camden Street school, I have no doubt we probably knew each other in our childhood.

Cheers, John

Hi tweedie,

Yes, it does seem a lifetime ago and hard to recall names from those days, but I think I remember Scott and definately the marching music going to class. Not sure if I started there in '54 0r '55 but we may well have been in the same class. I can remember going to school with the Brow leather satchel strapped to my back with my Janet & John book inside haha. My mum would come over at playtime to the gates and see how I was doing, we lived straight across the street about 10 yards away. I wonder if I am in your school photograph? As I remember school photos from then, but sadly they were lost over time!

Hi Isabel,

All those names are familiar to me, I wish my memory was clearer. My surname is Kenny and most of my family come from the Gorbals. It will be great to see the photo, I'm looking forward to it.

Hi Robert and Isabel,

Thanks for the info robert, still trying to put faces to the names, but for some reason I can't seem to, unfortunately. Although, I have no problem remembering places, streets and events going on, clearly.

Hope you manage to find the photo Isabel, will be interesting to see if I can find my ugly mug on there, if I am I should recognise the jet Black hair and the coo's lick that my Mum always referred to haha
