I know this is a long shot, but I am looking for anyone who knew or is related to John and Helen Murphy (nee Fitzpatrick) who lived at 65 Thistle Street in 1891. John was born in 1841 in Ireland and Helen in Liverpool in 1846. They had 3 children - Alice, Mary Ellen and Henry. Alice died in 1951 and Mary Ellen emigrated to Canada. I would be delighted if anyone with any kind of connections to them would contact me through this site.

Just wondering as I love to read all the memories they have of the old Gorbals and hope someone isn't mucking about for a bit of fun.

F.A.O. Jim McLean - I attended Bonnies and left the year we were all moved to make way for the demolition. I imagine you would have mostly attended Strathbungo as that's where the boys went. Us females went to Craigie Street. I remember Mr. Berry who was the head and Mr. Scanlon (was it him who was nicknamed SCUD?) or was it Mr. Lee - can't quite remember. I have hunted high and low to see if there was any photos of the school in Alice Street but no luck. The only male teacher we had whilst at the old school was Mr Vaughan for French. F.A.O. Billy Malcolm - I don't know your mother. I thought with the name Malcolm which was quite unusual in the Gorbals and was the married name of my mother's pal in the 40's, her own name was Leicester and I'm sure it was Naburn Street or Lawmoor Street she lived in. The only person I knew in Abbotsford Place was Dorothy Kessler who was my cousin. I wouldn't have posted, but got so tired wading through the fairytale drivel written by some of the people on this board, I had to offer an alternate version. One more thing, unlike most of the posters, I lived in the heart of the Gorbals and like most of it's inhabitants I did NOT speak in Glasgow slang. My teachers at Tradeston Street School and then Holyrood would not have allowed it. What I wrote was merely the tip of the iceberg re. the Old Gorbals. I wish everyone well in 2012 but refuse to look back with rose coloured glasses. Intrigued to read several anecdotes regarding the long gone St. Bonaventures secondary school at Alice Street, Oatlands. I also attended 'Bonnies' in the very early 70's. F.A.O. Anne of Eaglesham. I think you're slightly off the radar when you state that older contributors are living in fairyland. Any ex-Gorbals residents who are 60+ will have memories from a bygone era, be-it good or bad. The younger generation would not know or understand what life was like in the Gorbals area. My mother is aged 91 and still alive, and her memories of the old Gorbals is very much clear despite bringing up 5 kids in a tiny 1-bedroomed house in Ballater Street. By all means, encourage younger people to share their stories of the Gorbals, but would it mean anything to the folk who lived through the 20's,30's,40's,50's, and 60's amid tough economic times and slum clearances? Don't think so!!!

I read that somebody that came from the Gorbals in the early 50s said it was great. They must be mad!! My recollection of the Gorbals (Cumberland Street) no heating inside and damp laveies outside. We moved to Caslemilk later on - breath of fresh air. Open spaces for kids growing up.

I really enjoy reading the Anecdotes, whether they be nostalgic or negative. I'm retired, but my favourite memory was travelling down Crown Street on the 37 bus to and from work when I lived in Castlemilk. I would see my family's old home and once favourite landmarks when I was a kid growing up in Old Rutherglen Road. Slowly as the years went by, Crown Street and it's surrounds disappeared block by block, brick by brick. Ah well, back to reading the anecdotes. Submitted by: Joe McConville

I vaguely remember accompanying my late father to the unempoyment offices in Crown Street early 1960's. Would I be correct in thinking these offices were converted from the disused Hutchie Grammar School, and several years later, were demolished to make way for the controversial Hutchie E housing blocks?

Sammy of Falkirk - I don't think "Big Yogi" has had that shop for a long time and the next time I am passing by bus I'll look and see if it is still standing as they have demolished the Oatlands and rebuilt it. Re. Broxi Bear's reply about Rosebery Park (Oatlands). Sorry Broxi, but my elderly uncle says Pollock Juniors temporarily used the nearby Shawfield Stadium (Clyde FC), and not Rosebery Park as claimed. I think Rosebery Park was burnt to the ground about 1997 and demolished as it had chemicals under the pitch!! Hard to believe Oatlands once housed it's own local football team and football ground and I'm not talking about Clyde FC here!

I am off to a wee place called Nunraw just outside Edinburgh. It's a free trip organised by the local authority. Very nice of them to give Georgy a free holiday. F.A.O. Maura from the USA - Well done for speaking up - your story is more like the true version of the long lost Gorbals. You're the very first person to be honest in the years I have been on here. I remember my dad in many a drunken stupor taking his anger out on his kids and my mother and it was widespread. I still have bad memories and it does affect you. I remember how scared I was to walk from my house in Cavendish Street to the Palace Picture House because the Cumbie ran around there. Many times I would get kicked or slapped in the face as I walked by spat on threatened, it was scary, most of these boys on their own were nothing but in their gang they found bravado. What makes no sense is that some guys on here still talk of the Cumbie as if it were special and they must be over 60 years old! They were cowardly thugs. In those days the pubs were predominately full of men, woman had the occasional lounge to sit in but were looked down on for being in a pub. Thanks Maura for highlighting the truth, I hope we can hear similar stories about the real Gorbals from others.

Nobody enjoys posting sad memories from post war Gorbals, but how refreshing to see what life was like through the eyes of so many unfortunate people. I agree with the person who said : There were too many pubs in the old Gorbals. IMO - A hundred too many! I'm only 55 & have lived in the Gorbals all my life, but when I look at the whole area from 1995 onwards, it's refreshing to see superior housing, less pubs, & high rise flats being pulled down! I sincerely hope the next generation never witness the slums & thuggery that prevailed when I grew up in Crown Street. As for the remaining 4 or 5 pubs - raise them to the ground!

For M.Borland. I read your anecdote with fond memories. The dairy shop in question was at the corner of Gilmour Street and Orchard Street (not Oregon Street). I lived just opposite Oatlands school. I can remember moving out to Castlemilk in 1960, so those tenements must have been demolished about that time? I was only 11-years old, so I could be mistaken.

I was only a teenager then living in nearby Polmadie Road, but I think the Club folded up sometime about 1959-60. I always shake my head when I read the latest "fond memories of the Gorbals", especally from those folks who have left the place. I left because like a lot of Gorbals women I was married to an abuser who beat me at the least provocation. Glasgow men felt it was their God given right to punch their wives whenever they felt like it. The occasional black eye and cut lip added to the variety. And of course the famous Glasgow pubs, these rancid places on every corner and in between were the source of endless abuse and pain for women and their children. I cannot believe that some posters wondered about the number of pubs in the Gorbals. Too many!! Maybe all of you lived in another place with the same name. But the Gorbals I knew wasn't this "nice wee place" I keep reading about. Apologies for being blunt, but that was MY Gorbals and this is after all "Gorbals Anecdotes"

Clientel has changed, lot of the younger Gorbals lads drink in there. Still seeking info on my father John O'neill, born Kinning Park area approx May 27th 1924, baptised at St.Margarets church Kinning Park in June 1924, married Patricia O'Hanlon in Dublin 1953 and had 4 kids in total Judith Anne (stepdaughter), Terry, David and Carol (myself) we lived variously at Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool and London. Her brother (my uncle) Bill sadly passed away in his 50s. My Nana was Mary (nee McArthur) & and my Papa was Alexander. I think my Great Granny Currie lived up the next close in Norfolk St. My Mum married my Dad (William McPhie) in Jan 1960 (Dad sadly passed away in Oct 2011 at 85). We lived in Cathcart till I was 3 1/2 then moved to Rutherglen where Mum still lives in the same house. Would love to hear from anyone who knew our family in the Gorbals or who knows some passed on stories. My Nana's Dad passed away in 1961 a few weeks after I was born & I was the only one of his great-grandchildren that he held. I believe he'd suffered from Mustard Gas effects in WW1 and also lost his wife (Christina Munro) in childbirth while he was in the trenches. He passed away in Foresthall Hospital in 1961 after I was born in May 1961. I feel very priviledged to be the only one of his Great-grandchildren that he was allowed to hold shortly before he passed.

It is that time of the year when my home sickness mood starts to creep up on me,here I am sitting in my little house, the weather is seventy five degrees, the sun is shining and we are all running around with tee shirts on, the only thing is I can't stop thinking about my days in the Gorbals. I wonder if any other folks who emigrated feel like this at holiday time, or is it just me. Yes Doris, we also got an apple and bar of chocolate and sometimes half a crown, and if we were lucky, one little toy. Sure wish I could get rid of this homesick feeling. Thanks for response on my memory of Old Ru'glen Road. In the words of my older brother John sadly passed away, it's no' often yer right but yer wrang again. At least someone remembers it the way I do. There was a bank, a Coyles fruit shop (I think it was the same family who had one in St Enoch Square and Ru'glen Main Street. Further up there was a play park and a post office on the other side of the road, and also before the railway bridge was the Cleland Bar. I am not sure whether it was under this bridge or the one further along that we used to get roasted peanuts after my da had taken us to the George (?) picture house in Crown Street cooked on an oil drum. I just managed to retrieve this after windows memory said it was too low. I hope it was the computer it meant. Have a good New Year, but sadly never the same as the ones in the old Gorbals.
